Effect of silymarin on biochemical indicators in patients with liver disease: systematic review with meta-analysis

To evaluate the effect of silymarin on the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (γGT) in patients with liver diseases. mETHODSA systematic review with meta-analysis of ramdomized and controlled clinical trials was performed, evaluating the effects of sylimarin in patients with hepatic diseases, published by January 31, 2016. Clinical trials were sought on the basis of The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library, Pubmed/medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs and Clinical Trials. The trials with adult and elderly patients of both sexes, with Liver Diseases who took oral silymarin supplementation, as extract or isolated, as well as Silymarin combined with other nutrients, were included. The trials should provide information about the intervention, such as dosages and detailing of the product used, besides the mean and standard deviation of serum levels of ALT, AST and γGT of the baseline and at the end of the intervention. RESULTSAn amount of 10904 publications were identified. From those, only 17 were included in the systematic review and 6 in the meta-analysis, according to the used selection criteria. In this meta-analysis, the results indicated a reduction of 0.26 IU/mL (95%CI: -0.46-0.07, P = 0.007) at the level of ALT and 0.53 IU/mL (95%CI: -0.74-0.32, P = 0.000) at the serum levels of AST after using the silymarin, both, statistically significant, but with no clinical relevance. There was no significant change in the γGT levels. Subgroup analyzes were also performed for the biochemical markers in relation to the type of intervention, whether silymarin isolated or associated with other nutrients and the time of intervention (whether ≥ 6 mo or mo). The study of corrosion of magnesium and its alloys has emerged a hot topic in the applications of lightweight structural materials. The inherently high electrochemical activity of bare magnesium surfaces still lacks a convincing mechanism to describe the observed experimental characteristics, and it has prompted the development of various types of protective coatings with the aim of slowing metal dissolution. In recent years, new instruments and techniques have been developed to study with spatial resolution the local corrosion processes that occur in metallic materials in general, and for magnesium and its alloys in particular, both for bare surfaces and coated. Scanning microelectrochemical techniques, such as local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(LEIS), scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECm), scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET), scanning ion-selective electrode technique(SIET) and scanning Kelvin probe(SKP) can provide information about the local electrochemical activity of metallic surfaces. In the present work, the applications of these techniques in corrosion studies of magnesium and its alloys are reviewed. Assessment of corrosion mechanisms, barrier properties of conventional coatings and active corrosion behavior of self-healing coatings are examined. Limitations and future developments in this area are discussed.

The relationships between climate conditions and wood density in tropical forests are still poorly *** quantify spatial dependence of wood density in the state of minas Gerais(mG,Brazil),map spatial distribution of density,and correlate density with climate variables,we extracted data from the Forest Inventory of minas Gerais for 1988 trees scaled throughout the territory and measured wood density of discs removed from the *** variables were extracted from the database of the Ecological-Economic Zoning of minas *** spatial analysis,tree densities were measured at 44 georeferenced sampling *** data were subjected to exploratory analysis,variography,cross-validation,model selection,and ordinary *** relationships between wood density and environmental variables were calculated using dispersion matrices,linear correlation,and *** density proved to be highly spatially dependent,reaching a correlation of 96%,and was highly continuous over a distance of 228 *** distribution of wood density followed a continuous gradient of 514-659 kg m^(−3),enabling corre-lation with environment *** was correlated with mean annual precipitation(−0.57),temperature(0.63),and evapotranspiration(0.83).Geostatistical methods proved useful in predicting wood density in native tropical forests with different climate *** results confirmed the sensitivity of wood density to climate change,which could affect future carbon stock in forests.

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

Considering the expansion of forest plantations over the Brazilian territory and the imminent increase in air temperatures due to global warming,the search for technologies that ensure high levels of productivity and high quality plants in clonal nurseries is *** kaolin-based particle films(KBPF)has been used as a physical barrier to reduce the negative effects of excessive solar radiation and adverse *** effects of KBPF on production and physiological quality of eucalyptus mini-cuttings were evaluated during two different seasons.A randomized block design was used,consisting of five treatments and four *** concentrations(0,3%,5%,7%,and 10%)were tested here and six weekly replicates of each concentration was *** different kaolin concentrations and seasonal variations resulted in a quadratic response of the leaf SPAD reading during both daily evaluation *** applications resulted in a quadratic response of photochemical efficiency in the morning period,and an increasing specific leaf weight linear response,and during the dry season,the different kaolin concentrations resulted in a bud length quadratic *** results indicated that the kaolin application maintained the production and yield index statistically equal between weekly KBPF applications,improving photochemical efficiency,leaf thickness,SPAD reading,and bud *** use of KBPF could reduce the intervals between collections of mini-cuttings and increase nursery yields in environments that present high temperatures.

CFD predictions for hazardous area classification

This study aimed to describe a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) procedure using the ANSYS CFX software 16.1 and design of Experiments for the determination of volume and extension of explosive atmospheres due to fugitive emissions of flammable *** multidimensional statistical sampling technique Latin Hypercube was used, which defined 100 simulations of random methane gas leak *** CFD model proved to be robust in predicting the extension and volume of the explosive atmosphere for orifice diameters from 0.1 to2.5 mm, pressure from 0.1 mPa to 12 mPa and temperatures from 0 ℃ to 400 ℃.It was found that the calculation domain must be parameterized 8 m in length for each millimeter of the diameter of the source of release to ensure the *** order not to lose precision for very small diameters, the mesh was parameterized with 50 elements along the orifice *** was proved that gravity does not influence the extension and volume of the explosive atmosphere at sonic *** deviation from the ideal gas behavior in the reservoir,achieved by applying the Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation of state, also has not significantly influenced the extension and volume of the explosive *** results showed that the size of the explosive atmosphere varies directly with the diameter of the source emission and reservoir pressure, and inversely with the temperature of the *** diameter of the source is the parameter that has the major effect on the extension of the explosive atmosphere, followed by the pressure and lastly the temperature of the reservoir.

The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties,such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging *** influence of an extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was *** blood(Wistar rats) was incubated with the extract,stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium *** were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood *** percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was *** analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(Pm 96.48 ± 1.19 to 54.46 ± 7.38) on blood cells compartment,(from 81.11 ± 4.15 to 61.33 ± 4.74) on insoluble fractions of blood cells and(from 65.91 ± 2.44 to 13.15 ± 3.62) on insoluble fractions of *** conclusion,the results suggest that the substances present on this extract can alter this labeling process,probably due to(i) redox properties(antioxidant and chelator activities) and/or(ii) specific actions in the binding sites where the 99mTc would be bound on the blood *** a consequence,precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LWDHW,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models.
