This work deals with the degradation of AZ31 and AZ91 magnesium alloys when they are exposed to three types of physiological media for seven days at 37°C:Ringer's,Hanks\and simulated body fluid(sBF)solutions.A combination of immersions tests and surface characterisation methods were employed to evaluate the attack on the surface,and the stability of the formed corrosion product layers for each alloy/electrolyte *** of the Mg-ion released into the electrolytes were also carried out in order to be correlated with the degradation of the *** impedance spectroscopy(EIs)and potentiodynamic polarisation(PDP)techniques were employed to compare the performance of the alloys in these different aggressive *** to the obtained results,the Mg-alloys exposed to Hanks'media were the less affected,which fact was attributed to a higher stability of the corrosion products layer formed in this medium,in comparison of those formed in Ringer's and sBF *** add让ion,the corrosion damage was lower for AZ91 than for AZ31 alloy in all environments due to its higher Al *** mass loss rates calculated from both immersion tests and electrochemical methods followed the same trend for comparative purposes between alloys.

We present the first millennial-length gridded field reconstruction of annual temperature for China, and analyze the reconstruction for spatiotemporal changes and associated uncertainties, based on a network of 415 well-distributed and accurately dated climatic proxy *** new reconstruction method is a modified form of the point-by-point regression (PPR) *** main difference is the incorporation of the "composite plus scale" (CPs) and "Regularized errors-in-variables" (EIV) algorithms to allow for the assimilation of various types of the proxy ***, the search radius is restricted to a grid size; this restriction helps effectively exclude proxy data possibly correlated with temperature but belonging to a different climate *** results indicate that: 1) the past temperature record in China is spatially heterogenic, with variable correlations between cells in time; 2) the late 20th century warming in China probably exceeds mean temperature levels at any period of the past 1000 years, but the temperature anomalies of some grids in eastern China during the Medieval climate anomaly period are warmer than during the modern warming; 3) the climatic variability in the eastern and western regions of China was not synchronous during much of the last millennium, probably due to the influence of the Tibetan *** temperature reconstruction may serve as a reference to test simulation results over the past millennium, and help to finely analyze the spatial characteristics and the driving mechanism of the past temperature ***, the lower reconstruction skill scores for some grid points underline that the present set of available proxy data series is not yet sufficient to accurately reconstruct the heterogeneous climate of China in all regions, and that there is the need for more highly resolved temperature proxies, particularly in the Tibetan Plateau.

The semi-arid sahel regions ofWest Africa rely heavily on groundwater from shallow to moderately deep (stalline bedrock aquifers for drinking water *** quality may be affected by high geogenic arsenic (As) concentrations (>10 μg/L) stemming from the oxidation of sulphide minerals (pyrite,arsenopyrite) in mineralised *** aquifers are still little investigated,especially concerning groundwater residence times and the influence of the annual monsoon season on groundwater *** gain insights on the temporal aspects of As contamination,we have used isotope tracers (noble gases,3H,stable water isotopes (2H,18O)) and performed hydrochemical analyses on groundwater abstracted from tube wells and dug wells in a small study area in southwestern Burkina *** revealed a great variability in groundwater properties (*** conditions,As concentrations,water level,residence time) over spatial scales of only a few hundred metres,characteristic of the highly heterogeneous fractured *** As levels are found in oxic groundwater of circum-neutral pH and show little relation with any of the measured *** concentrations are relatively stable over the course of the year,with little effect seen by the *** residence time does not seem to have an influence on As concentrations,as elevated As can be found both in groundwater with short (10^3 a) residence times as indicated by 3He/4He ratios spanning three orders of *** results support the hypothesis that the proximity to mineralised zones is the most crucial factor controlling As concentrations in the observed redox/pH *** existence of very old water portions with residence times >10^3 years already at depths of shallow fractured bedrock aquifers of Burkina Faso,suggesting that overexploitation of these relatively low-yielding aquifers may be an issue in the

Geologists can offer key insights in regard to several high profile environmental issues that are faced today. At the same time, like scientists in most other disciplines, many geologists are not naturally adept at communicating in an effective manner with non-geologists. This paper firstly identifies the more subtle facets of topical major issues （the drivers） where geologists can contribute important perspectives. Next, the detractions to effective communication are identified, along with the recommended means to overcome them （the mechanisms）. Many topical issues are in fact geologically-underpinned （e.g. obviously, geohazards）, so geologists ought to have something meaningful to say. By the same token, if geologists have difficulty communicating with other scientists, how can they possibly hope to communicate with journalists and with the public at large？ Proper scientific contextualization is an ideal starting point, but this fundamental framing step does not always suit protagonists who have non-scientific agendas. Thus, geologists not only have to convey their science （geology） in an understandable way, but to do so in a truly effective manner must recognize and take into account possible predispositions that their audience may have.

This text isof great interest not only because it gives a great deal of information oninheritance fares at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 12th centUries B.C.E.,but also because it refers to a patrimonial redemption which can be considered asa "lineage claim", an aspect of the law about Which we have very littleinformation.

In this work, we show that when there is insufficient equipment for detecting a disease whose prevalence is t% in a sub-population of size N, it is optimal to divide the N samples into n groups of size r each and then, the value src="Edit_***" alt="" /> allows systematic screening of all N individuals by performing less than N tests (In this expression, src="Edit_***" alt="" /> represents the floor functionsup>1sup> of x ∈ R). Based on this result and on certain functions of the R software, we subsequently propose a probabilistic strategy capable of optimizing the screening tests under certain conditions.

Objective:MicroRNA(miRNA),a short noncoding RNA,is claimed to be a potential blood-based *** aimed to identify and evaluate miRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers for non-small cell lung cancer(NsCLC).Methods:Profiles of 745 miRNAs were screened in the serum of 8 patients with NsCLC and 8 age-and sex-matched controls using TaqMan low-density arrays(TLDAs)and validated in 25 patients with NsCLC and 30 with other lung diseases(OLs)as well as in 19 healthy persons(HPs).The diagnostic performance of the candidate miRNAs was assessed in 117 cases of NsCLC and 113 OLs using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR).Differences in miRNA expression between patients with NsCLC and controls were assessed using the Mann–Whitney U *** area under receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve(AUC)was obtained based on the logistic regression ***:Ten miRNAs were found to be differentialy expressed between patients with NsCLC and controls,including miR-769,miR-339-3p,miR-339-5p,miR-519a,miR-1238,miR-99a#,miR-134,miR-604,miR-539,and *** expression of miR-339-3p was significantly higher in patients with NsCLC than in those with OLs(Ps(P=0.020).ROC analysis revealed an miR-339-3p expression AUC of 0.616[95%confidence interval(CI):0.561–0.702].The diagnostic prediction was increased(AUC=0.706,95%CI:0.649–0.779)in the model combining miR-339-3p expression and other known risk factors(i.e.,age,smoking status,and drinking status).Conclusions:MiR-339-3p was significantly upregulated in patients with NsCLC compared with participants without cancer,suggesting a diagnostic prediction value for high-risk ***,miR-339-3p expression could be a potential blood-based biomarker for NsCLC.

This work presents a simple method to functionalise the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy by applying a duplex MgF_(2)/chitosan coating,which improves its corrosion resistance and provides it with some antibacterial ***,the effect of three chitosan solutions with different concentrations on the growth of the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae in nutritive medium(TsB)was evaluated by absorbance kinetics experiments,where the chitosan solution at 2%(m/V)was selected for the coating *** coating application,the AZ31 substrate was pretreated with hydrofluoric acid for 48 hours in order to form a MgF_(2)conversion ***,the coating was applied to the pretreated substrate through the dry-casting *** of the alloy in each surface condition(bare,pretreated,and pretreated+coated with chitosan)were exposed to simulated body fluid(sBF)for 21 days at 37°C,with the solution renewed every 24 hours and the wastes *** surfaces were characterised by sEM-EDs,and XPs after the immersion tests,whereas the stored solutions were employed to measure the change in the Mg-ions *** impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarisation were performed in each surface condition to compare their corrosion resistance in *** antibacterial activity of the functionalised surfaces was evaluated by the plate counting method and compared with bare *** results were correlated and demonstrate that the modified surface of AZ31 achieved a higher corrosion resistance when it was exposed to sBF,as well as a reduction of the bacterial growth during in vitro tests.
