Importance of building maintenance at the time of architectural design of buildings rehabilitated with heritage value

During architectural conception phase,building maintenance problematic is mostly a result of the unintentional use of preconceived architectonical solutions rather than a consequence of a specific influence of maintenance *** the architect in the act of design understands the importance of these solutions in the service life span of a *** aware of this,is it possible for the architect to be supplied with a decision support system that allows him to consider the implications of building maintenance since the early design phases? Having awareness of this problem and its consequences in the early design phases a research project was started at the Faculty Engineering of the University of Oporto(FEUP),under which the implications of building maintenance in the act of architectural design is *** article presents the methodology developed to identify the needs of maintenance of buildings based on a DSS-decision support system that provides simple tools the architect can use in design *** methodology is based on decomposition of building parts-Elements Source of Maintenance ESM-,and subsequently,a set of functional requirements that determine the performance regarding building maintenance on account of architectural *** maintenance actions are defined: Inspection,Pro-action,Cleaning,Correction,Replacement,Legal enforcement,Limits of *** can thus set up a relationship between the act of design and its performance framework based on behavior,intervention and the ownership of the work of *** a Multicriteria Analysis(MCA) a qualitative evaluation of different options based on maintenance requirements *** on the importance of architectural conception concerning the building maintenance were clearly arrived at and the utility of the developed decision support tool was also highlighted.

In this editorial,we comment on an article by Tang et al published in the World Journal of *** and diabetes are two pathological situations that are intrinsically *** lifestyle changes nor pharmacological treatments have achieved diabetes *** this perspective,bariatric surgery has been widely used as an approach for weight loss in obese patients and as a strategy to promote metabolic *** main effects of bariatric surgery involve direct action in improving cardiovascular function and endothelial function and reducing insulin resistance,leading to diabetes remission in the short term following *** this context,it has been observed that hormones from the gastrointestinal tract and endothelium play a prominent role in this *** reversing endothelial dysfunction,it is possible to balance pro-inflammatory cytokine production,improving the availability of nitric oxide and inhibiting vascular oxidative ***,it can be considered an efficient anti-inflammatory strategy,alleviating interferon-gamma-mediated adipose tissue *** current challenge must be to unravel the pathophysiological mechanisms and potential targets for treating metabolic diseases.

Spontaneous Mammary Carcinomas in Female Dogs: Association between Immunohistochemical Degrees of Neoplasia Aggressiveness and Residual Pyrethroids

Of the tumors diagnosed in the female dogs have the highest mammary neoplasias incidence. These neoplasias can be influenced by environmental contaminants. Despite evidence of pyrethroid toxicity, carcinogenic potential has not yet been sufficiently elucidated, there is a need to investigate their involvement in mammary tumor. In previous studies, pyrethroid residues were detected in female dogs with mammary neoplasia, however was not investigate the influence of this insecticide in the genesis and aggressiveness of mammary cancer. This study aimed to investigate possible relations between pyrethroid residues and aggressiveness of mammary carcinoma in female dogs. Fifty selected female dogs were divided into five groups of 10 animals each: the Control group, female dogs without mammary neoplasia;the groups Luminal A, Luminal B, HER-2 Superexpression and Basal were constituted by female dogs that presented inguinal mammary carcinoma classified immunohistochemically. The aggressiveness of carcinomas was evaluated by immunohistochemistry (HER-2, p63, estrogen receptor). Residual concentrations of the pyrethroids from the mammary gland and fat tissue adjacent to it were determined by HPLC. Data were analyzed by Chi-Square test. Of the all animals, six presented residues of pyrethroids in mammary samples and 10 presented it in fat tissue samples. There was no statistical evidence that pyrethroids are involved in mammary carcinoma aggressiveness in female dogs.

Effects of climate changes on distribution of Eremanthus erythropappus and ***(Asteraceae)in Brazil

Phylogeographic patterns of endemic species are critical keys to understand its adaptation to future climate ***,based on chloroplast DNA,we analyzed the genetic diversity of two endemic and endangered tree species from the Brazilian savanna and Atlantic forest(Eremanthus erythropappus and Eremanthus incanus).We also applied the climate-based ecological niche modeling(ENM)to evaluate the impact of the Quaternary climate(last glacial maximum*21 kyr BP(thousand years before present)and Mid-Holocene*6 kyr BP)on the current haplotype ***,we modeled the potential effect of future climate change on the species distribution in 2070 for the most optimistic and pessimistic *** primer/enzyme combination(SFM/HinfI)revealed polymorphism with very low haplotype diversity,showing only three different *** haplotype 1 has very low frequency and it was classified as the oldest,diverging from six mutations from the haplotypes 2 and *** *** populations are structured and differ genetically according to the areas of *** general,the populations located in the north region are genetically different from those located in the *** genetic structuring was observed for *** ENM revealed a large distribution during the past and a severe decrease in geographic distribution of *** and *** from the LGM until present and predicts a drastic decline in suitable areas in the *** reduction may homogenize the genetic diversity and compromise a relevant role of these species on infiltration of groundwater.

Landscape genetics reveals inbreeding and genetic bottlenecks in the extremely rare short-globose cacti Mammillaria pectinifera (Cactaceae) as a result of habitat fragmentation

Mammillaria pectinifera is an endemic, short-globose cactus species, included in the IUCN list as a threatened species with only 18 remaining populations in the Tehuacfin-Cuicatlan Valley in central Mexico. We evaluated the population genetic diversity and structure, connectivity, recent bottlenecks and population size, using nuclear microsatellites. M. pectinifera showed high genetic diversity but some evidence of heterozygote deficiency （F15）, recent bottlenecks in some populations and reductions in population size. Also, we found low population genetic differentiation and high values of connectivity for M. pectinifera, as the result of historical events of gene flow through pollen and seed dispersal. M. pectinifera occurs in sites with some degree of disturbance leading to the isolation of its populations and decreasing the levels of gene flow among them. Excessive deforestation also changes the original vegetation damaging the natural habitats. This species will become extinct if it is not properly preserved. Furthermore, this species has some ecological features that make them more vulnerable to disturbance such as a very low growth rates and long life cycles. We suggest in situ conservation to prevent the decrease of population sizes and loss of genetic diversity in the natural protected areas such as the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Biosphere Reserve. In addition, a long-term ex situ conservation program is need to construct seed banks, and optimize seed germination and plant establishment protocols that restore disturbed habitats. Furthermore, creating a supply of living plants for trade is critical to avoid further extraction of plants from nature.

According to the National Company of Supplying(CONAB)in 2017 alone,the national production of acai pulp reached 219855 t,equating to 180 million dollar(USD).Almost 85%of the weight of fruit is constituted by residual biomass,even though researches have highlighted important applications for this biomass,most of it is discarded as organic ***,it is relevant to envisage in-depth studies about how to use these residues,particularly regarding the environmental impact of its target *** cellulose(CNC)and lignin are organic derivatives obtained through the physical-chemical treatment of lignocellulosic *** are abundant and currently considered as biopolymers because of their structural characteristics and their diverse applications in food and the medical *** work presents the mass yields achieved and the physical-chemical characteristics of the lignocellulosic derivatives extracted from the fiber of the acai berry.A statistical design was used to define the influence of process variables as temperature,reaction time and fiber size on the yield of these byproducts.A maximum yield close to 64%of type I CNC,with 45%of crystallinity degree was achieved at the minimum condition of temperature and fiber ***,through rheological analysis,it was possible to predict the nanocrystal aspect ratios,ranging from 71 to *** extracted lignin was rich in methoxy groups,p-coumaryl alcohol and p-coumaric acid,and its structural unit’s low state of aggregation can be an indication of low molecular weight,which envisions an appropriate use for this lignin to produce commodity chemicals.

Multi-stage block freeze concentration via gravitational method applied to increase of the nutritional content of Morinda citrifolia L. tea

The processing of Morinda citrifolia fruit normally results in a large number of waste leaves that hold many bioactive compounds with nutritional and pharmacological properties. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of a multi-stage block freeze concentration (BFC) via gravitational method on the physicochemical properties of the leaf extract (noni tea). The results in solid retention showed fractions almost 7 times most concentrated than the initial feed. In addition, when compared to the initial content, the BFC process showed an efficiency higher than 90% in the retention of phenolic compounds. Assays in liquid chromatography allowed the detection and quantification of phenolic compounds, in which the total amount increased by more than 1000% in relation to the initial content after each BFC step. Finally, it was also possible to observe a significant increase in the antioxidant activity of the concentrated product after the simulated in vitro digestion process. It was concluded that using a non-thermal, sustainable, low-cost processing, promoted the obtaining of concentrated fractions with high biological and nutritional values with promising properties for application in the development of functional foods from agroindustrial wastes.

Utilization of Crude Glycerol by Yarrowia lipolytica IMUFRJ 50678 in Bioproduct Production

Transesterification is the most common production process for biodiesel. From this reaction, a glycerin phase is produced that is impure, thus lowering market value. However, because it is rich in carbon, it is an alternative for generating bioproducts with a higher added value through bioconversion by microorganisms. The aim of this study was to screen parameters, such as pH （4, 5, 6, 7 and 8） and the initial glycerol concentration at 30 ± ℃ with agitation at 150 rpm for bioemulsifier and lipid synthesis in a submerged medium by Yarrowia lipolytica IMUFRJ 50678 from crude glycerin. The best conditions for bioemulsifier production were 30 ± ℃ at pH： 6 with 50 g/L of initial substrate, which produced 2.7 g/L of lipids, from which the optimum 300.5 mg/L of triglycerides was produced over 48 h of microorganism growth.

A Logic Filter for Tumor Detection on Mammograms

This paper presents a novel approach for detection of suspicious regions in digitized mammograms. The edges of the suspicious region in mammogram are enhanced using an improved logic filter. The result of further image processing gives a gray-level histogram with distinguished characteristics, which facilitates the segmentation of the suspicious masses. The experiment results based on 25 digital sample mammograms, which are definitely diagnosed, are analyzed and evaluated briefly.
