Purpose:To investigate whether blood flow restriction(BFR) without concomitant exercise mitigated strength reduction and atrophy of thigh muscles in subjects under immobilization for lower ***:The following databases were searched:PubMed,CINAHL,PEDro,Web of Science,Central,and ***:The search identified 3 eligible studies,and the total sample in the identified studies consisted of 38 *** and isometric torque of the knee flexors and extensors was examined in 2 ***-sectional area of thigh muscles was evaluated in 1 study,and thigh girth was measured in 2 *** BFR protocol was 5 sets of 5 min of occlusion and 3 min of free flow,twice daily for approximately 2 *** a whole,the included studies indicate that BFR without exercise is able to minimize strength reduction and muscular atrophy after *** is crucial to emphasize,however,that the included studies showed a high risk of bias,especially regarding allocation concealment,blinding of outcome assessment,intention-to-treat analyses,and group similarity at ***:Although potentially useful,the high risk of bias presented by original stodies limits the indication of BFR without concomitant exercise as an effective countermeasure against strength reduction and atrophy mediated by immobilization.

AIM:To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of abdominal ultrasound (US) for the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis in severe obese subjects and its relation to histological grade of steatosis. METHODS: A consecutive series of obese patients, who underwent bariatric surgery from October 2004 to May 2005, was selected. Ultrasonography was performed in all patients as part of routine preoperative time and an intraoperative wedge biopsy was obtained at the beginning of the bariatric surgery. The US and histological findings of steatosis were compared, considering histology as the gold standard. RESULTS: The study included 105 patients. The mean age was 37.2 ± 10.6 years and 75.2% were female. The histological prevalence of steatosis was 89.5%. The sensitivity and specificity of US in the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis were, respectively, 64.9% (95% CI: 54.9-74.3) and 90.9% (95% CI: 57.1-99.5). The positive predictive value and negative predictive value were, respectively, 98.4% (95% CI: 90.2-99.9) and 23.3% (95% CI: 12.3-39.0). The presence of steatosis onUS was associated to advanced grades of steatosis on histology (P = 0.016). CONCLUSION: Preoperative abdominal US in our series has not shown to be an accurate method for the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis in severe obese patients. Until another non-invasive method demonstrates better sensitivity and specificity values, histological evaluation may be recommended to these patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

The complex meniscus tissue plays a critical role in the knee. The high susceptibility to injury has led to an intense pursuit for better tissue engineering regenerative strategies, where scaffolds play a major role. In this study, indirect printed hierarchical multilayered sca ffolds composed by a silk fibroin (SF) upper layer and an 80/20 (w/w) ratio of SF/ionic-doped β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bottom layer were developed. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between two types of sca ffolds pro- duced using di fferent SF concentrations, i.e., 8% (w/v) (Hi8) and 16% (w/v) (Hi16) was performed. In terms of architecture and morphology, the produced sca ffolds presented homogeneous porosity in both layers and no di fferences were observed when comparing both sca ffolds. A decrease in terms of mechanical performance of the sca ffolds was observed when SF concentration decreased from 16 to 8% (w/v). Hi16 revealed a static compressive modulus of 0.66 ± 0.05 MPa and dynamical mechanical properties ranging from 2.17 ± 0.25 to 3.19 ± 0.38 MPa. By its turn, Hi8 presented a compressive modulus of 0.27 ± 0.08 MPa and dynamical mechanical properties ranging from 1.03 ± 0.08 MPa to 1.56 ± 0.13 MPa. In vitro bioactivity studies showed formation of apatite crystals onto the surface of Hi8 and Hi16 bottom layers. Human meniscus cells (hMCs) and human primary osteoblasts were cultured separately onto the top layer (SF8 and SF16) and bottom layer (SF8/TCP and SF16/TCP) of the hierarchical sca ffolds Hi8 and Hi16, respectively. Both cell types showed good adhesion and proliferation as denoted by the live/dead staining, Alamar Blue assay and DNA quanti fication analysis. Subcutaneous implantation in mice revealed weak in flammation and sca ffold’s integrity. Watermelon is an L-citrulline-rich fruit that has been used as a supplement to increase L-arginine in plasma,which in turn plays a critical role in the synthesis of nitric oxide,a molecule that regulates vascular *** rind,similar to its pulp,presents a high L-citrulline content,yet a lower concentration of sugar,which would be more convenient for individuals who need to refrain from excessive sugar ingestion(i.e.,diabetics and obese individuals).Further,ingestion of watermelon rind can be a sustainable alternative to increase plasma L-arginine,given that rind of fruits is commonly ***,we evaluated the effect of ingestion of a product derived from watermelon rind and pulp(microencapsulation in spray drier)on plasma amino acids(L-citrulline,L-arginine and L-ornithine),glucose,and *** participants(28.36±5.70 years)were enrolled in a single blind,cross-over and randomized *** ingested microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp(containing 4 g of L-citrulline)plasma amino acids,glucose,and insulin were evaluated before and 30,60,90 and 120 min after *** was observed that both microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp increased L-citrulline through 120 min and microencapsulated watermelon rind significantly increased L-arginine at 30 *** addition,microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp similarly increased plasma glucose and insulin *** conclusion,these findings suggest that both microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp are effective to increase plasma L-citrulline and microencapsulated watermelon rind effectively increases plasma *** addition,rind and pulp promote similar changes on plasma glucose and insulin.

Dual Scheimpflug imaging as a screening method for occludable angles-a comparison with gonioscopy

AIM: To evaluate dual Scheimpflug analyzer(Galilei) as a screening method for the diagnostic of gonioscopically narrow anterior chamber angles(ACA). METHODS: In 40 eyes of 40 patients with different ACA range, the ACA, anterior chamber volume(ACV) and anterior chamber depth(ACD) were analyzed using the dual Scheimpflug analyzer(Galilei G6 system). Correspondence between these parameters and Shaffer's classification based on gonioscopy were studied. Receiving operator characteristic(ROC) curves and partition analysis were used to determine the efficacy of the Galilei system in screening for narrow angles. Agreement(Kappa statistics), sensitivity, and specificity for each eye, according to Galilei measures, were also assessed. RESULTS: Shaffer's grade(from 0 to 4) were significantly associated with each of the measurements(P<0.001). In screening eyes with narrow angles with the Galilei, the area under the ROC curve was largest(0.90) when ACD was used as the reference, and partition analysis demonstrated that those eyes were most adequately partitioned with an ACD of 2.86 mm with 100% sensitivity and 80% specificity. CONCLUSION: The Galilei is a secure, repeatable and noncontact screening method for narrow angles. However it does not provide sufficient information about the ACA anatomy to be considered a substitute for gonioscopy.

Changes in land cover have a direct impact on forest ecosystem goods and services. In this study, changes in land cover in Sierra de Juarez–Oaxaca ecosystems were estimated using a consistent processing of Landsat images and OBIA methodology. Additionally, landscape analyses using FRAGSTAT were conducted. In 2014, Sierra de Juarez–Oaxaca was covered by approximately 84% of forests, mainly pine-oak and cloud forests. After extensive deforestation until 2001, this trend was reversed and the forest cover surface area in 2014 was slightly higher than in 1979. The comparison of the landscape structure of the forested and agricultural lands suggests an increase in habitat heterogeneity. However, interspersion and juxtaposition indices, showing the patch shape by patch area and perimeter, were similar throughout the study period(1979–2014). Social and economic drivers can explain this situation: namely, community organization, forest enterprises, payment for ecosystem services programs, and changes of agricultural activity. Communities in the Sierra of Oaxaca have reforested degraded lands, created community forest enterprises, and preserved the forest under conservation schemes like those proposed by the Mexican payment for ecosystem services programs. However, their sustainable management faces internal challenges and has become highly dependent on political and institutional decisions beyond their control.
