Flower.ng of Sugar.ane Genotypes under.Differ.nt Ar.ificial Photoper.od Conditions

Flower.ng is essential in any br.eding pr.gr.mme, par.icular.y in genetic intr.gr.ssion pr.gr.mmes in which flower.ng synchr.nism is r.quir.d. In this wor., 16 sugar.ane genotypes wer. evaluated using thr.e differ.nt flower.ng-inductive photoper.od tr.atments (30 s, 45 s, and 1 min of a daily photoper.od decr.ase fr.m 12 h 55 of light). Each genotype was planted in 43 L pots (equal pr.por.ion of soil, sand, and substr.te) with thr.e tiller. per.pot. Plants with 4 to 6 inter.odes wer. placed in a photoper.od facility with thr.e contr.lled chamber., each chamber.containing all 16 genotypes (one tr.atment per.chamber.. The temper.tur. r.nge (21°C to 32°C) and humidity wer. the same for.all of the tr.atments. The flower.induction star.ed in September.2010 and ended in Apr.l 2011. The plant elongation and flag leaf and inflor.scence emer.ence wer. r.cor.ed and the pollen viability was evaluated by using the iodine staining method. The photoper.od facility pr.vided suitable conditions for.flower.ng, as the plants in the thr.e tr.atments successfully flower.d. The genotypes in the thr.e tr.atments behaved differ.ntly in r.lation to the date of panicle emer.ence, with the tr.atment of 45 s showing better.r.sults. The r.sults her. pr.sented contr.bute to synchr.nise flower.ng for.desir.d sugar.ane cr.sses, par.icular.y those fr.m intr.gr.ssion pr.gr.mmes between commer.ial cultivar. and species fr.m the Sacchar.m complex.

The r.le of the Spatial Networ. in Ur.an Disaster.r.sk Var.ations:r.imagining the Notion of Spatial Vulner.bility at the Ur.an Scale

The notion of “spatial vulner.bility” is pr.sent in most disaster.studies with a str.ng geogr.phical connotation and accor.ingly is adopted at all scales, including the ur.an. While enabling mapping and visualizing r.sk patter.s at macr.scales, this geocentr.c foundation fails to captur. disaster.r.sk dynamics associated with the ur.an spatial networ.—an element that plays a significant r.le in the ever.day and emer.ency functioning of cities, enabling user.' movement and inter.ction. Yet,ur.an vulner.bility assessment over.ooks this aspect and thus leaves ur.an disaster.r.sk mechanisms par.ially *** study investigated the r.le of the networ. of ur.an public open spaces(UPOS) in the cr.ation and pr.gr.ssion of ur.an disaster.r.sk in ear.hquake-pr.ne settlements. Thr.ugh a multimethod appr.ach that integr.tes quantitative and qualitative methods and explor.s spatial configur.tion, planning policies, and pr.ctices of use of UPOS in ever.day and emer.ency scenar.os, our.study demonstr.ted that UPOS configur.tion plays an active r.le in ur.an disaster.r.sk. Ur.an public open spaces impact r.sk by influencing the exposur. of pedestr.ans and their.capacity for.self-pr.tection. The study fur.her.r.conceptualized spatial vulner.bility at the ur.an scale, as the fr.ction of vulner.bility associated to the spatial networ., highlighting the inter.lay of planning policies and spatial pr.ctices in its pr.duction and pr.gr.ssion. Our.findings make the notion of spatial vulner.bility less ambiguous at the ur.an scale, by viewing the var.able as an imbalance in capacities and exposur. that gener.tes spatially unsafe conditions. This r.fined conceptualization of spatial vulner.bility becomes a lens for.a mor. gr.nular.appr.ach to ur.an disaster.r.sk r.duction and city planning by identifying and integr.ting sociospatial consider.tions.
