Polydopamine-coated photoautotrophic bacteria for improving extracellular electron transfer in living photovoltaics

Living photovoltaics are microbial electrochemical devices that use whole cell–electrode interactions to convert solar energy to electricity.The bottleneck in these technologies is the limited electron transfer between the microbe and the electrode surface.This study focuses on enhancing this transfer by engineering a polydopamine(PDA)coating on the outer membrane of the photosynthetic microbe Synechocystis sp.PCC6803.This coating provides a conductive nanoparticle shell to increase electrode adhesion and improve microbial charge extraction.A combination of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),UV–Vis absorption,and Raman spectroscopy measurements were used to characterize the nanoparticle shell under various synthesis conditions.The cell viability and activity were further assessed through oxygen evolution,growth curve,and confocal fluorescence microscopy measurements.The results show sustained cell growth and detectable PDA surface coverage under slightly alkaline conditions(pH 7.5)and at low initial dopamine(DA)concentrations(1 mM).The exoelectrogenicity of the cells prepared under these conditions was also characterized through cyclic voltammetry(CV)and chronoamperometry(CA).The measurements show a three-fold enhancement in the photocurrent at an applied bias of 0.3 V(vs.Ag/AgCl[3 M KCl])compared to non-coated cells.This study thus lays the framework for engineering the next generation of living photovoltaics with improved performances using biosynthetic electrodes.

BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases particularly myocardial infarction(MI)are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity around the globe.As cardiac tissue possesses very limited regeneration potential,therefore use of a potent small molecule,inhibitor Wnt production-4(IWP-4)for stem cell differentiation into cardiomyocytes could be a promising approach for cardiac regeneration.Wnt pathway inhibitors may help stem cells in their fate determination towards cardiomyogenic lineage and provide better homing and survival of cells in vivo.Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)derived from the human umbilical cord have the potential to regenerate cardiac tissue,as they are easy to isolate and possess multilineage differentiation capability.IWP-4 may promote the differentiation of MSCs into the cardiac lineage.AIM To evaluate the cardiac differentiation ability of IWP-4 and its subsequent in vivo effects.METHODS Umbilical cord tissue of human origin was utilized to isolate the MSCs which were characterized by their morphology,immunophenotyping of surface markers specific to MSCs,as well as by tri-lineage differentiation capability.Cytotoxicity analysis was performed to identify the optimal concentration of IWP-4.MSCs were treated with 5μM IWP-4 at two different time intervals.Differentiation of MSCs into cardiomyocytes was evaluated at DNA and protein levels.The MI ratmodel was developed.IWP-4 treated as well as untreated MSCs were implanted in the MI model,then the cardiac function was analyzed via echocardiography.MSCs were labeled with 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate(DiI)dye for tracking,while the regeneration of infarcted myocardium was examined by histology and immunohistochemistry.RESULTS MSCs were isolated and characterized.Cytotoxicity analysis showed that IWP-4 was non-cytotoxic at 5μM concentration.Cardiac specific gene and protein expression analyses exhibited more remarkable results in fourteen days treated group that was eventually selected for in vivo transplantation.Cardiac functi

Advances in Active Suspension Systems for Road Vehicles

Active suspension systems(ASSs)have been proposed and developed for a few decades,and have now once again become a thriving topic in both academia and industry,due to the high demand for driving comfort and safety and the compatibility of ASSs with vehicle electrification and autonomy.Existing review papers on ASSs mainly cover dynamics modeling and robust control;however,the gap between academic research outcomes and industrial application requirements has not yet been bridged,hindering most ASS research knowledge from being transferred to vehicle companies.This paper comprehensively reviews advances in ASSs for road vehicles,with a focus on hardware structures and control strategies.In particular,state-of-the-art ASSs that have been recently adopted in production cars are discussed in detail,including the representative solutions of Mercedes active body control(ABC)and Audi predictive active suspension;novel concepts that could become alternative candidates are also introduced,including series active variable geometry suspension,and the active wheel-alignment system.ASSs with compact structure,small mass increment,low power consumption,high-frequency response,acceptable economic costs,and high reliability are more likely to be adopted by car manufacturers.In terms of control strategies,the development of future ASSs aims not only to stabilize the chassis attitude and attenuate the chassis vibration,but also to enable ASSs to cooperate with other modules(e.g.,steering and braking)and sensors(e.g.,cameras)within a car,and even with high-level decision-making(e.g.,reference driving speed)in the overall transportation system-strategies that will be compatible with the rapidly developing electric and autonomous vehicles.

Aquaculture industry contributes significant aquaculture species production to meet fish protein demand from the world.The industry is gearing towards intensification to increase more production in the near future.Various technologies and efforts were introduced into aquaculture industry to bring it up to the next higher level.However,the development of aquaculture industry is hindered by disease constraint.As a result,excessive use of antibiotics and chemicals were applied to reduce or minimize risk of disease outbreak in aquaculture farming activity.Subsequently,aquacultures products and environment were highly exposed to these antibiotics and chemicals.To resolve this issue,fish farmers were encouraged to utilize alternative method in aquaculture species health management.Prebiotics has become a new approach in aquaculture industry to maintain aquaculture species health and a good environment at the same time produce chemical and antibiotic-free aquaculture product.In this review paper,we summarize and discuss the effects of prebiotic mixtures administration on growth performance,immune response,disease resistance,and tolerance against abiotic stressors of aquatic animals.

On the origin of plasticity-induced microstructure change under sliding contacts

Discrete dislocation plasticity(DDP)calculations are carried out to investigate the response of a single crystal contacted by a rigid sinusoidal asperity under sliding loading conditions to look for causes of microstructure change in the dislocation structure.The mechanistic driver is identified as the development of lattice rotations and stored energy in the subsurface,which can be quantitatively correlated to recent tribological experimental observations.Maps of surface slip initiation and substrate permanent deformation obtained from DDP calculations for varying contact size and normal load suggest ways of optimally tailoring the interface and microstructural material properties for various frictional loads.

This essay explores recent incursions into comparative modalities and highlights how global comparative literature better reflects the ways in which borders and mobility have become definingelementsof the21stcentury.However,thehumanities remainunderattack.Recent openings towards decolonizing the curriculum and strengtheningsynergies between various social justice approaches may prove fruitfulin coordinating defenses.Todayconomic and historical circumstances are such that it has become increasingly hard to think of literary traditions in monolithic terms since globalization has dramatically transformed the circulation of literary works In our understanding,a comparativist is not necessarily invested either in demonstrating the intrinsic connections between cultural or literary objects as traditional practitioners of comparative literature have been,or committed to disclosing incommensurable differences,as postcolonial comparativists have been Instead,the comparative frame of mind is defined by the fundamental insight that any cultural product or production is inherently heterogeneous and hence requires no external object of comparison Put otherwise,a comparative frame of mind does not require the co-presence of two or more cultural or literary archives in practicing comparative literature,for any single object can be read in relation to,oreven against,itsowncontext.Likewise,languagesarenot,andshould notbeconsidered monolithic entities Rather,they are historical containers,mobile vessels that transport perpetually evolving references and symbols across borders,the portals and vectors that allow for multi-dimensional cultural and linguistic expression.We therefore argue that the persistent privileging of multi-lingual fluency as the raison d'etre of comparative literature needs to be relinquished,and that instead one needs to embrace the idea that one can bea comparatist withinasingle language.In other words,we argue that comparison is as relevant within diverse national traditions as it is between them.

Interspecific plant interaction via root exudates structures the disease suppressiveness of rhizosphere microbiomes

Terrestrial plants can affect the growth and health of adjacent plants via interspecific interaction.Here,we studied the mechanism by which plant root exudates affect the recruitment of the rhizosphere microbiome in adjacent plants—with implications for plant protection—using a tomato(Solanum lycopersicum)–potatoonion(Allium cepa var.agrogatum)intercropping system.First,we showed that the intercropping system results in a disease-suppressive rhizosphere microbiome that protects tomato plants against Verticillium wilt disease caused by the soilborne pathogen Verticillium dahliae.Second,16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that intercropping with potatoonion altered the composition of the tomato rhizosphere microbiome by promoting the colonization of specific Bacillus sp.This taxon was isolated and shown to inhibit V.dahliae growth and induce systemic resistance in tomato plants.Third,a belowground segregation experiment found that root exudates mediated the interspecific interaction between potatoonion and tomato.Moreover,experiments using split-root tomato plants found that root exudates from potatoonion,especially taxifolin—a flavonoid compound—stimulate tomato plants to recruit plant-beneficial bacteria,such as Bacillus sp.Lastly,ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis found that taxifolin alters tomato root exudate chemistry;thus,this compound acts indirectly in modulating root colonization by Bacillus sp.Our results revealed that this intercropping system can improve tomato plant fitness by changing rhizosphere microbiome recruitment via the use of signaling chemicals released by root exudates of potatoonion.This study revealed a novel mechanism by which interspecific plant interaction modulates the establishment of a disease-suppressive microbiome,thus opening up new avenues of research for precision plant microbiome manipulations.

Background Aicardi-Goutières syndrome(AGS)is a genetically determined disorder with a variable phenotype.Since the original description of AGS,advances in gene sequencing techniques have resulted in a significant broadening of the phenotypic spectrum associated with AGS genes,and new clinical pictures have emerged beyond the classic presentation.The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the clinical spectrum of AGS and report currently available treatments and new immunosuppressive strategies.Data sources Literature reviews and original research articles were collected from databases,including PubMed and Clini-calTrials.gov.Relevant articles about AGS were included.Results The involvement of the nervous system certainly represents the major cause of mortality and morbidity in AGS patients.However,other clinical manifestations,such as chilblains,hepatosplenomegaly,and hematological disturbances,may lead to the diagnosis and considerably impact the prognosis and overall quality of life of these patients.Therapeutic approaches of AGS are limited to interventions aimed at specific symptoms and the management of multiple comorbidities.However,advances in understanding the pathogenesis of AGS could open new and more effective therapies.Conclusions The over-activation of innate immunity due to upregulated interferon production plays a critical role in AGS,leading to multi-organ damage with the main involvement of the central nervous system.To date,there is no specific and effective treatment for AGS.New drugs specifically targeting the interferon pathway may bring new hope to AGS patients.

Droplets impacting solid superhydrophobic surfaces is appealing not only because of scientific interests but also for technological applications such as water-repelling.Recent studies have designed artificial surfaces in a rigid–flexible hybrid mode to combine asymmetric redistribution and structural oscillation water-repelling principles,resolving strict impacting positioning;however,this is limited by weak mechanical durability.Here we propose a rigid–flexible hybrid surface(RFS)design as a matrix of concave flexible trampolines barred by convex rigid stripes.Such a surface exhibits a 20.1%contact time reduction via the structural oscillation of flexible trampolines,and even to break through the theoretical inertial-capillary limit via the asymmetric redistribution induced by rigid stripes.Moreover,the surface is shown to retain the above water-repelling after 1,000 abrasion cycles against oilstones under a normal load as high as 0.2 N·mm−1.This is the first demonstration of RFSs for synchronous waterproof and wearproof,approaching real-world applications of liquid-repelling.

The most common complication of orthopedic surgery is implant failure, which can result in catastrophic injury and a significant financial burden for patients. Implant failure can be caused by a variety of factors, the most common of which are peri–implant infection(or implantrelated infection), excessive inflammatory response which caused pain and aseptic loosening. Orthopedic surgeons now have a variety of options for treating these issues, including revision surgery, which has demonstrated to be effective. If excessive inflammatory reaction caused by the corrosion and peri–implant infection can be avoided, it will be of enormous social benefits. This review will provide a summary of corrosion and the inflammation reactions due to the corrosion and antimicrobial properties of Mg alloy-based implants covering both in vitro and in vivo studies. The strategies on hindering/overcoming the excessive inflammatory response and enhancing the antimicrobial activity are discussed in this review.
