Polymer nanocomposites have been successfully used as excipients in pharmaceutical technology because of the convenient features that make them suitable for many applications, especially in controlled drug delivery therapies. The objective of this work was to prepare and characterize PLA and starch microparticles containing Viscogel B8 organophilic clay as a matrix for controlled release of rifampicin, one of the most spread drugs for tuberculosis treatment. The systems obtained by the spray drying technique were characterized by DRX, FTIR, SEM and low-field NMR. In addition, dissolution tests were performed on simulated gastric fluid. The micrographs indicate that the presence of the drug caused a small change in the shape and size of the particles. In the presence of the drug, the particles were spherical and presented wider size distribution. The XRD assays didn’t show crystalline peaks of rifampicin in the microparticles, which suggests that rifampicin exists in an amorphous solid solution inside the starch-PLA particles. The mathematical model of Baker-Lonsdale was chosen for the treatment of the dissolution data, describing the controlled release of the drug from the matrix by a spherical diffusion process. The results suggest that the proposed release system may be used for the delivery of orally administered drugs, such as rifampicin.

Electrochemical treatment is an alternative modality for tumor treatment based on the application of a low intensity direct electric current to the tumor tissue through two or more platinum electrodes placed within the tumor zone or in the surrounding areas. This treatment is noted for its great effectiveness, minimal invasiveness and local effect. Several studies have been conducted worldwide to evaluate the anfitumoral effect of this therapy. In all these studies a variety of biochemical and physiological responses of tumors to the applied treatment have been obtained. By this reason, researchers have suggested various mechanisms to explain how direct electric current destroys tumor ceils. Although, it is generally accepted this treatment induces electrolysis, electroosmosis and electroporation in tumoral tissues. However, action mechanism of this alternative modality on the tumor tissue is not well understood. Although the principle of Electrochemical treatment is simple, a standardized method is not yet available. The mechanism by which Electrochemical treatment affects tumor growth and survival may represent more complex process. The present work analyzes the latest and most important research done on the electrochemical treatment of tumors. We conclude with our point of view about the destruction mechanism features of this alternative therapy. Also, we suggest some mechanisms and strategies from the thermodynamic point of view for this therapy. In the area of Electrochemical treatment of cancer this tool has been exploited very little and much work remains to be done. Electrochemical treatment constitutes a good therapeutic option for patients that have failed the conventional oncology methods.

The renal handling of Na^+ balance is a major determinant of the blood pressure(BP) level. The inability of the kidney to excrete the daily load of Na+ represents the primary cause of chronic hypertension. Among the different segments that constitute the nephron, those present in the distal part(i.e., the cortical thick ascending limb, the distal convoluted tubule, the connecting and collecting tubules) play a central role in the fine-tuning of renal Na^+ excretion and are the target of many different regulatory processes that modulate Na^+ retention more or less efficiently. G-protein coupled receptors(GPCRs) are crucially involved in this regulation and could represent efficient pharmacological targets to control BP levels. In this review, we describe both classical and novel GPCR-dependent regulatory systems that have been shown to modulate renal Na^+ absorption in the distal nephron. In addition to the multiplicity of the GPCR that regulate Na^+ excretion, this review also highlights the complexity of these different pathways, and the connections between them.

Homeopathy is a therapy based on the principle of similarity. This therapy was proposed by the father of medicine, Hippocrates for almost 3000 years, thus developing the principle ＂Similia similibus curantur＂. Therapy with homeopathic medicines is widely used in therapeutics, but the patient often has difficulty in understanding how the treatment should be conducted. The Pharmaceutical Care, one pact relationship between patient and pharmacist, presents itself as an appropriate tool to assist in obtaining positive results in homeopathic therapy. Objectives： to demonstrate how the pharmacotherapeutic follow--AFT assists in detecting and solving problems related to homeopathic medicine and promotes improvements in response to treatment. Methodology： we performed literature review of the portals： SCIELO, MEDLINE and Google academics. Patients were interviewed by pharmacotherapeutic monitoring that was conducted--AFT employing the Dader method adapted to pharmaceutical care in homeopathic medicines in a pharmacy, this place was located in Rio de Janeiro, from November-December 2010 and January 2011. The research was previously approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Unigranrio （CAAE： 4531.***.000.317-10）. Results： the first of three interviews were identified DRM （drug related problem）, having been required to apply IF--pharmaceutical intervention to adjust the behavior of the patient regarding the treatment and improvement of the results. Conclusions： the pharmacotherapeutic follow--AFT--introduced himself as appropriate methodology for managing patients on therapy with homeopathic medicines, and an improvement factor in the outcome of treatment of the patients.

Spatial Distribution of Plant-Associated Invertebrates and Environmental Bioassessment in a Natural Riverine Lake (Lake Fibreno, Central Italy)

Lake Fibreno is a Mediterranean riverine lake located in Central Italy and fed by large flows of groundwater and characterized by the presence of a wide reed stand area and of the only floating island of the South Europe. It is enclosed in a Natural Reserve recognized as Special Area of Conservation (SAC-IT6050015) for the presence of habitats and species (92/43/EEC) of relevant scientific interest. In this paper, we compare the plant-associated meio-macrobenthic invertebrates among sites with different environmental characteristics. Both vegetation and invertebrates of Lake Fibreno were well diversified and abundant and were composed of a mixing of species typical of lentic and lotic waters. Our results show that a gradient of orthophosphate and nitrite contents and current velocity appeared to be the driver factors affecting the flora and fauna spatial distribution at the sampling sites. To obtain a bioassessment of the ecological quality of the vegetation zone, we compared the riverine Lake Fibreno with typical lentic lakes previously studied in Central Italy. We selected metrics, such as macrophyte belt extent and taxa richness, invertebrate species richness and Shannon diversity, ETOM (Ephemeropta + Trichoptera + Odonata + Mollusca), ETOC (Ephemeropta + Trichoptera + Odonata + Coleoptera) and LCrM (Large Crustacea + Mollusca). The comparison indicated a good ecological status of the vegetation zone of Lake Fibreno mainly due to the continuous washout effects (dilution and fast water removal) which reduce the nutrient content available for phytoplankton and maintain the high transparency and good oxygenation of the lake waters.

The ancestral cultures have described many therapeutic properties of garlic,therefore,it is of central interest to elucidate the molecular basis explaining this millenary empirical ***,it has been demonstrated a neuroprotective effect of allicin–a phytochemical present in garlic-linked to oxidative-inflammatory *** improved neuronal injury by heat shock protein 70(Hsp70)and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)***,allicin exerts renal protection involving a possible angiotensin type 1 receptor(AT1)*** connection,AT1 overexpression has been recognized as a central deleterious factor in many brain ***,there are no studies that evaluate AT1-Hsp70-iNOS interaction as a mechanism linked to ***,our central aim is to evaluate if the allicin protective effect is associated with an AT1-Hsp70-iNOS counterbalance *** this study,a murine microglial cell line(BV-2)was injured with lipopolysaccharides and treated or not with ***,it was evaluated cell viability,proinflammatory cytokine levels,cellular oxidative stress,iNOS,Hsp70,and AT1 protein expression(cellular and mitochondrial fractions),nitrite levels,and protein-protein *** results demonstrated that allicin could prevent neuronal injury due to a reduction in oxidative stress and inflammatory status mediated by an AT1-Hsp70-iNOS counterbalance axis linked to direct protein-protein interaction.

The paper deals with the energy and indoor comfort on buildings of UPF （University ofPasso Fundo）, located in southern Brazil, in order to improve the eco-efficiency concepts in the university＇s building stock, reinforcing its responsibility towards sustainable development. The factors that affect thermal performance and the energy consumption of two case studies were identified, including the general characteristics of the envelope and the indoor conditions. The simulations with DesignBuilder software compare the energy and thermal performance of both cases： those results allow the identification of their positive and negative aspects, as well as making a co-relation with the students＇ sensations of comfort--obtained through PMV （predicted mean vote）. The research indicates that it will be possible to improve eco-efficiency of existing and new buildings and campuses by retrofitting and upgrading it with regard to better indoor conditions that really correspond to climate conditions （hot and humid summers, and cold and damp winters）, using passive strategies for heating and cooling and at the same time to improve rational use of natural resources and to reduce the environmental impact. Probably, giving comfortable conditions to the users will increase energy consumption, but there is a potential reduction of lighting and equipment that could minimize this impact.

Stem cells and cell therapy: From basic sciences to clinical perspectives

Stem cells are seen as a possible solution for organ and tissue regeneration and for the treatment or even cure of various diseases. There are basically two types of stem cells: embryonic and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos and exhibit an extensive multiplication and differentiation potential. On the other hand, adult stem cells, which are found in bone marrow and other tissues, have a lower multiplication and differentiation capacity but are more easily isolated and applied. In adult stem cell therapies using bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplantation, the differentiation of a certain cell type is induced and its multiplication is stimulated, followed by the implantation of these cells into damaged tissues. Examples of the application of stem cells include the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes mellitus and heart diseases. Stem cells open up new prospects for the treatment of a series of diseases. In this respect, basic knowledge of the mechanisms of growth and differentiation of these cells is of the utmost importance to optimize therapeutic results. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of stem cell differentiation and describe the clinical results reported in the literature, mainly by Brazilian research groups.
