Antibiotics and probiotics in treatment of inflammatory bowel disease

many experimental and clinical observations suggest that intestinal microflora plays a potential role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease （IBD）. manipulation of the luminal content using antibiotics or probiotics represents a potentially effective therapeutic option. The available studies do not support the use of antibiotics in ulcerative colitis （UC）. Antibiotics are effective in treating septic complications of Crohn＇s disease （CD） but their use as a primary therapy is more controversial, although this approach is frequently and successfully adopted in clinical *** is evidence that probiotic therapy may be effective in the prevention and treatment of mild to moderate UC. In contrast, a lack of successful study data at present precludes the widespread use of probiotics in the treatment of CD. Both antibiotics and probiotics appear to play a beneficial role in the treatment and prevention of pouchitis and further trials are warranted to fully quantify their clinical efficacy.

The predictability of certain environmental factors that affect the life cycle of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri(Heller,1862) was evaluated in a study of its reproductive biology in an area adjacent to Babitonga Bay,State of Santa Catarina,Brazil. monthly sampling was conducted from July 2010 through June 2011 at depths of 5,8,11,14,and 17 m.76 004 individuals were obtained,with a pronounced peak in absolute abundance in austral autumn(34 208),coinciding with the annual closed season from march to may. Grain size composition of the sediment showed the closest relationship to the distribution of individuals(multiple linear regression,P males(bearing spermatophores) and females with spent gonads(cross-correlation,P males and reproductive females(with a 1-month lag) suggest that the peak of reproductive males preceded the peak offemale ones. This result agrees with the pattern expected for females,which copulate in post-ecdysis(spent gonads). Spawning seemed to take place at greater depths,as evidenced by the concentration of reproductive females in these areas. The reproductive activities observed here confirm that this species follows a tropical/subtropical reproductive pattern,spawning continuously throughout the year,with the highest peaks in spring and autumn. The data indicate that the juvenile recruitment period observed in August-September resulted from the reproductive output noted in April–may. Additionally,the reproductive period recorded in November led to the juvenile peak observed in march–may.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is one of the most common cancer worldwide and results from the accumulation of mutations and epimutations in colonic mucosa cells ultimately leading to cell proliferation and ***,CRC prognosis is still poor and the search of novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers is highly desired to prevent CRC-related *** present article aims to summarize the most recent findings concerning the use of either genetic or epigenetic(mainly related to DNA methylation)biomarkers for CRC diagnosis,prognosis,and response to *** large-scale DNA methylation studies suggest that CRC can be divided into several subtypes according to the frequency of DNA methylation and those of mutations in key CRC genes,and that this is reflected by different prognostic *** evidence suggests that the analysis of DNA methylation in blood or fecal specimens could represent a valuable non-invasive diagnostic tool for ***,a broad spectrum of studies indicates that the inter-individual response to chemotherapeutic treatments depends on both epigenetic modifications and genetic mutations occurring in colorectal cancer cells,thereby opening the way for a personalized ***,combining genetic and epigenetic data might represent the most promising tool for a proper diagnostic,prognostic and therapeutic approach.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) encompasses a range of liver histology severity and outcomes in the absence of chronic alcohol *** mildest form is simple steatosis in which triglycerides accumulate within hepatocytes.A more advanced form of NAFLD,nonalcoholic steatohepatitis,includes inflammation and liver cell injury,progressive to cryptogenic *** has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in children and *** recent rise in the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity likely explains the NAFLD epidemic *** is strongly associated with abdominal obesity,type 2 diabetes,and dyslipidemia,and most patients have evidence of insulin ***,NAFLD shares many features of the metabolic syndrome(metS),a highly atherogenic condition,and this has stimulated interest in the possible role of NAFLD in the development of *** evidence suggests thatNAFLD is associated with a significantly greater overall mortality than in the general population,as well as with increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease(CVD),independently of classical atherosclerotic risk ***,several studies including the pediatric population have reported independent associations between NAFLD and impaired flow-mediated vasodilatation and increased carotid artery intimal medial thickness-two reliable markers of subclinical atherosclerosis-after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors and ***,the rising prevalence of obesity-related metS and NAFLD in childhood may lead to a parallel increase in adverse cardiovascular *** children,the cardiovascular system remains plastic and damage-reversible if early and appropriate interventions are established *** goals for NAFLD should address nutrition,physical activity,and avoidance of smoking to prevent not only end-stage liver disease but also CVD.

A reconfigurable propulsion unit based on the Peaucellier-Lipkin mechanism has the ability to describe exact straight or curved paths depending on the selected ratio between the lengths of two of its links. The Peaucellier-Lipkin mechanism with one degree of freedom is transformed into a more sophisticated parallel kinematic chain by including four more degrees of freedom. The resulting propulsion unit is able to adapt its kinematic structure and reach instant centers of rotation, in accordance with the presence of three points that border a geometric path. A laser sensor mounted on the body of the machine detects each point. Once the machine has detected the exact location of the border of the road, it walks along a curve parallel to that border. Although the proposed research describes only one propulsion unit or leg, the methodology can be applied to all the legs of the walking machine. The novel 5-DOF leg is able to reach different centers of rotation, providing either the concave or convex arcs that satisfy the basic principle of displacement of walking machines.

Although evidence is emerging that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is declining in all age groups, the understanding of its disease spectrum continues to evolve. If untreated, H. pylori infection is lifelong. Although H. pylori typically colonizes the hu-man stomach for many decades without adverse con-sequences, children infected with H. pylori can manifest gastrointestinal diseases. Controversy persists regarding testing (and treating) for H. pylori infection in children with recurrent abdominal pain, chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenia, and poor growth. There is evidence of the role of H. pylori in childhood iron deficiency anemia, but the results are not conclusive. The possibility of an inverse relationship between H. pylori and gastroesophageal reflux disease, as well as childhood asthma, remains a controversial question. A better understanding of the H. pylori disease spectrum in childhood should lead to clearer recommendations about testing for and treating H. pylori infection in children who are more likely to develop clinical sequelae.
