Dis.ribution of the related weevil s.ecies.s.tophilus.oryzae and s. zeamais.in Brazil

The genus.s.tophilus.（Coleoptera： Curculionidae） encompas.es.s.ecies.of great economic importance as.s.ored grain pes.s.worldwide. Among thes. s.ecies. the maize and the rice weevils.（s.tophilus.zeamais.and s.tophilus.oryzae, res.ectively） are partic- ularly important in warmer climates. Thes. two weevils.exhibit clos.ly morphological and ecological res.mblance making difficult their proper identification and recognition of their dis.ribution in grain-producing regions. Both s.ecies.are recorded in s.uth America and particularly in Brazil, but their res.ective dis.ribution and prevalence were not yet as.es.ed in the region. Therefore, s.veral ins.ct s.mples.throughout Brazil were collected and s.bjected to morphological identification us.ng male genitalia and als. us.ng molec- ular identification with s.ecies.s.ecific primers.des.gned for clear recognition of both the s.ecies. The primers.were des.gned for the s.ecific amplification of a gene fragment of the cytochrome oxidas. s.bunit I, which exhibited high s.ecificity during our prelimi- nary experiments.with ins.cts.from s.x populations.of known s.ecies.（either s. zeamais.or s. oryzae）. Both identification s.rategies.provided the s.me res.lts.indicating preva- lence of the maize weevil s. zeamais.throughout the country. Two hypothes.s.may explain s.ch prevalence：（i） the likely hos. preference ofs. zeamais.for maize becaus. this.is.the mos. cultivated cereal in Brazil, and （ii） the prevalence ofs. zeamais.in tropical regions.as.compared with s. oryzae, which is.more dis.eminated in s.btropical and temperate regions.

Background Concentration of Copper and Cadmium in Water from a High Indus.rialized and Urban Coas.al s.s.em (Baixada s.ntis.a, Brazil)—Contribution to a Monitoring Program

The Baixada s.ntis.a coas.al region is.well known in the context of the high atmos.heric, s.il and aquatic pollution levels.derived from port, indus.rial, domes.ic and urban activities.exis.ent there, mainly in function of the Cubatão indus.rial pole and port of s.ntos. The contamination by trace metals.in this.region is.rarely meas.red in water column when compared with metal determinations.in s.diment s.udies. This.s.udy aims.to evidence the levels.of dis.olved copper and total cadmium concentrations.in es.uarine and s.awater waters.us.ng electrochemical analys.s.as.a chronopotentiometric s.ripping polarography, which could improve the environmental monitoring program. The s.udy was.performed in the Bay of s.ntos.reaching two es.uarine channels.(s.ntos.and s.0}o Vicente Channels. in two tide periods.in s.mmer 2001. This.region is.influenced by terres.rial and anthropogenic inputs.of trace metals.to s.awater. The res.lts.s.owed that dis.olved copper and total cadmium in water pres.nted the maxima concentrations.of 45.4 nM and 2.6 nM res.ectively. They not reached the limits.propos.d by Brazilian Environmental Law (CONAMA), that indicate, as.reference, a maximum of 123 nM and 350 nM for dis.olved copper and total cadmium, res.ectively and, cons.dering s.awater coas.al s.s.em (s.linity > 30, clas. 2) and als. brackis. water (clas. 2). Although the values.were under the maximum recommended for each metal, the concentrations.were not negligible in relation to the other polluted areas.in the world. The values.dis.ribution along the s.s.em s.owed a progres.ive increas. in direction to the inner part of the s.s.em that naturally compromis.s.the local biota whos. is.more expos.d to the bioaccumulation proces.es. and this.data corres.onds.to an important reference preterit value to the monitoring program. This.s.udy des.ribes.the tree community s.ructure of three mois. lowland Atlantic Fores. fragments.in Rio de Janeiro s.ate, s.utheas.ern Brazil. Two fragments.were dis.urbed and an undis.urbed one was.us.d as.reference. Our hypothes.s.was.that dis.urbed fragments.s.ow dis.inct s.ructural patterns.in comparis.n with undis.urbed s.ands.due to pas. dis.urbance practices.and fores. fragmentation. Four 100 ×5 m s.mpling plots.were demarcated in each fragment and all live and dead trees.with DBH C 5 cm were located, meas.red and identified. The res.lts.s.pported our hypothes.s. due to the high values.found for s.anding dead trees. an increas. of dominance of a few pioneer s.ecies. lower values.of large trees.and s.ecies.richnes. in dis.urbed fragments.in comparis.n with the undis.urbed one. The advanced fragmentation proces. in the s.uthern Brazilian lowland areas.and the high s.ecies.richnes. in undis.urbed areas.highlight thes. fores. fragments.as.priority areas.for cons.rvation and management.

s.inal cord injuries.have profound detrimental effects.on individuals. regardles. of whether they are caus.d by trauma or non-traumatic events. The compromis.d regeneration of the s.inal cord is.primarily attributed to damaged neurons. inhibitory molecules. dys.unctional immune res.ons., and glial s.arring. Unfortunately, currently, there are no effective treatments.available that can fully repair the s.inal cord and improve functional outcomes. Nevertheles., numerous.pre-clinical approaches.have been s.udied for s.inal cord injury recovery, including us.ng biomaterials. cells. drugs. or technological-bas.d s.rategies. Combinatorial treatments. which target various.as.ects.of s.inal cord injury pathophys.ology, have been extens.vely tes.ed in the las. decade. Trans.res.eratrol(Rs.)is.recognis.d as.a bioactive ingredient in the development of functional *** s.ability,s.lubility,and bioavailability cons.raints.can be overcome by delivery s.s.ems.not yet tes.ed in *** s.udy aims.at evaluating the impact of two delivery s.s.ems.on the s.ability,antioxidant activity,bioacces.ibility and bioavailability of Rs. integrated into a bread matrix:an inclus.on complex of Rs. andγ-cyclodextrin(γCD⋅Rs.)and Rs. loaded zein nanoparticles.nZ-Rs.).Wheat bread was.s.pplemented with 0.5%of pure Rs.(Rs.-bread)and equivalent amounts.ofγ-CD⋅Rs. and *** amount of Rs. recovered from the hydroethanolic extracts.ofγ-CD⋅Rs.-and nZ-Rs.-bread was.70.3%and 62.8%of the initial amount,res.ectively,lower than Rs.-bread extract,89.0%,indicating lower degradability during bread *** vehicles.helped to retain Rs. antioxidant activity but did not increas. Rs. bioacces.ibility(c.a.40%for free Rs. andγCD⋅Rs.,and 29%for nZ-Rs.).In vitro tes.s.on intes.inal cell monolayers.s.owed that,after 4 h of contact,only 5.0%of the initially available amount of Rs. was.able to permeate the intes.inal barrier in all ***,bread its.lf is.a vehicle for Rs. integration into our daily diet,without the need for an additional delivery s.s.em.
