The Role of Zinc in chronic Kidney Disease Patients on Hemodialysis: A Systematic Review

Objective: Zinc has been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and also for its immune function in end stage renal disease patients. The aim of this review is to clarify whether there is a relationship between zinc levels and ESRD patients in hemodialysis. Methodology: A search through LILAcS and MEDLINE database using the keywords “zinc”, “chronic kidney disease” and “hemodialysis” was performed. Articles in English and Portuguese performed in humans with the previous words were selected. Studies with subjects younger than 18 years of age were excluded. Moreover, exclusion criteria included patients with absence of diagnosis of end stage renal disease and not in hemodialysis;patients treated with peritoneal dialysis, absence of abstract available, absence of clear association between zinc deficiency and worse prognosis. Results: The search found a total of 214 articles. A total of 44 publications were selected after appliance of exclusion criteria. conclusion: Zinc deficiency is highly prevalent, and it not only showed influence on inflammatory and immunological processes, but also interfered with metabolism and other systems. Zinc supplementation was considered positive. In summary, lower zinc levels are related to end stage renal disease patients in hemodialysis and supplementation seems to be a promising approach in such cases.

AIM： To evaluate the use of web-based technologies to assess the learning curve and reassess reproducibility of a simplified version of a classification for gastric magnification chromoendoscopy （Mc）. METHODS： As part of a multicenter trial, a hybrid approach was taken using a cD-ROM, with 20 films of Mc lasting 5 s each and an ＂autorun＂ file triggering a local HTML frameset referenced to a remote questionnaire through an Internet connection. Three endoscopists were asked to prospectively and independently classify 10 of these films randomly selected with at least 3 d apart. The answers were centrally stored and returned to participants together with adequate feedback with the right answer. RESULTS： For classification in 3 groups, both intra- [cohen＇s kappa （K） = 0.79-1.00 to 0.89-1.00] and inter-observer agreement increased from 1st （moderate） to 6th observation （k = 0.94）. Also, agreement with reference increased in the last observations （0.90, 1.00 and 1.00, for observers A, B and c, respectively）. Validity of 100% was obtained by all observers at their 4th observation. When a 4th （sub）group was considered, inter-observer agreement was almost perfect （K = 0.92） at 6th observation. The relation with reference clearly improved into K （0.93-1.00） and sensitivity （75%-100%） at their 6th observations. cONcLUSION： This Mc classification seems to be easily explainable and learnable as shown by excellent intra- and inter-observer agreement, and improved agreement with reference. A web system such as the one used in this study may be useful for endoscopic or other image based diagnostic procedures with respect to definition, education and dissemination.

Didanosine is an effective antiviral drug in untreated and antiretroviral therapy-experienced patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). An automated system using on-line solid extraction and High Performance Liquid chromatography (HPLc) with ultraviolet (UV) detection was developed and validated for pharmacokinetic analysis of didanosine in dog plasma. Modifications were introduced on a previous methodology for simultaneous analysis of antiretroviral drugs in human plasma. Extraction was carried out on c18 cartridges, with high extraction yield as stationary phase, whereas mobile phase consisted of a mixture of 0.02 M potassium phosphate buffer, acetonitrile (KH2PO4: acetonitrile: 96:4, v/v) and 0.5% (w/v) of heptane sulphonic acid. The pH was adjusted to 6.5 with triethylamine. All samples and standard solutions were chromatographed at 28 1c. For an isocratic run, the fiux was 1.0 mL/min, detection was at 250 nm and injected volume was 20 mL. The method was selective and linear for concentrations between 50 and 5000 ng/mL. Drug stability data ranged from 96% to 98%, and limit of quantification was 25 ng/mL. Extraction yield was up to 95%. Drug stability in dog plasma was kept frozen at 20 1c for one month after three freeze–thaw cycles, and for 24 h after processing in the auto sampler. Assay was successfully applied to measure didanosine concentrations in plasma dogs.

＜正＞To investigate the role of receptor oligomerization on the multiple affinity states of β2-adrenoceptors （β2AR） we used a system consisting of pairs of coexpressed Grinteracting receptors, one of which carrying a tethered Gαs subunit. HEK293 clones coexpressing Flag-tagged β2-AR-Gαs fusion protein plus dopamine D1 receptor （D1R）, or Myc-tagged D1R-Gas fusion proten plus β2AR, were selected. In both clones, adrenergic and dopaminergic agonists induced equal activation of the tethered G,, as determined by enhancement of GTPγS binding and of cholera toxin-catalysed ADP-ribosylation, either in intact membranes or in proteins isolated by affinity agarose beads following digitonin solubilization. The extent of activation induced by a maximal concentration of each individual agonist was identical to that produced by both agonists when jointly added. concentration-response curves of each agonist in the presence of increasing concentrations of the other, confirmed that there was no additivity in the activation of the tethered Ga by the two receptors. Moreover, the activation induced by both agonists together, was not changed even to the slightest extent upon occupation of the binding site of each individual receptor by a corresponding selective antagonist. Taken collectively, these data indicate that there is mutual exclusivity in the way the pair of receptors functionally activate the same Got subunit, regardless of whether they might or might not be physically associated into a common multimeric complex. Epinephrine competition for the binding sites of the radiolabeled adrenergic inverse agonist [3H]IcI-118,551 displayed strongly biphasic binding isotherms. The proportion of high affinity component was related to the extent of receptor expression and correlated to the degree of constitutive activation. The Amazonian economic occupation over the last forty years has been extremely harmful to the environment and to the traditional populations. One of the strategies to overcome this difficulty, dealing with sustainable development, is the development of productive units—starting with non-timber forest products (NTFP)—and the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) for the residents and/or owners of forest areas. The main problem which the literature demonstrates is that the estimated values paid for the PES are rather high, because they use the opportunity cost as reference, not considering the family reproduction social cost. The main aim of this study is to provide an alternative forecast of the value to be paid for the environmental services (PES) for the Amazon forest, based on the real costs of the forest communities maintenance, as based on the real economic needs of rural family production in the “chico Mendes” Extractive Reserve (RESEX), in Xapuri (Acre state), Brazil. It was used a specific methodology, developed regionally, which measured and provided indicators to evaluate and to analyze the economic evolution of those families over the last decade. Based on the needs of family reproduction, the calculations require that the minimum value for PES should be US$13 per hectare, a far lower and more appropriate value than the literature’s average propositions that is around US$50 per hectare. The present paper estimates that the costs of the PES in the chico Mendes RESEX would be approximately US$5,767,000 per year—taking into account the average area per family.

Female Futsal Players’ Profile and Biochemical Alterations through Intermittent High-Intensity Exercise Training

The aim of the study was to determine the physical, physiological and nutritionalcharacteristics of female futsal players and selected markers of oxidative stress after their exercise training (Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test). Eight health female futsal players (age 21.3 ± 3.2 years, body mass 64.5 ± 5.6 kg, height 169.5 ± 6.5 cm, body mass index 22.45 ± 2.25 kg/m2;mean ± SD) participated in this study. Blood samples were collected before, during and immediately after the exercise for glucose, lactate, ascorbic acid, total plasma antioxidant potential, lipid hydroperoxides, malondialdehyde and creatine kinase concentrations. Female futsal players appeared to meet caloric needs but failed to meet minimum carbohydrate and vitamin A, c and E recommendations. Immediately after the exercise there were an increase in lipid hydroperoxides (ranging from 9.32 ± 1.86 μmol?L–1 to 13.02 ± 1.62 μmol?L–1, p –11 to 3.29 ± 0.62 nmol?L–1, p –1 to 185.59 ± 6.96 U.I..L–1, p corbic acid and total plasma antioxidant potential had a slight decrease during and after exercise. considering that alterations in oxidative stress parameters associated with inadequate ingestion of nutrients can affect health and performance of game players, further studies are needed to evalu- ate the inclusion of an nutritional education program and extent of biochemical changes through athlete’s recovery pe- riod.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can be originated from autochthonous or allochthonous sources, where allochthonous DOM can be from pedogenic sources (humic substances—HSs) or anthropogenicsources (wastewater). The analysis of fluorescence emission, excitation, synchronous or excitation-emission matrix (EEM) have been used to identify the main source or probable contribution of dissolved compounds, such as humic acids (HA), fulvic acids (FA) and dissolved organic carbon (DOc) from sewage, but does not quantify. Fluorescence emission is a powerful technique to detect and qualify organic dissolved compounds but fails in quantitative aspects. In this work, we propose an in situ method for direct determination of DOc using synchronous fluorescence spectra with independent component analysis (IcA). Well known standard solutions were used for method development and validation. In this work, we show that it is possible to predict the number of independent contributions using an unsupervised method based on iterative Principal component Analysis and Independent component Analysis (PcA-IcA) approach over combined matrix results. Within these results it’s also possible to see that with a very small amount of independent components it is possible to describe environmental samples of HA, FA and primary productivity (PP).

Background:The impact of leprosy reduces health-related quality of life of affected patients,interfering with different factors such as *** study investigated the lipid profile,nutritional status,and risk for cardiovascular disease(cVD)in patients who underwent leprosy treatment in ***:Eighty-four adult patients of both genders ranging in age from 20 to 60 years and diagnosed with paucibacillary(PB)or multibacillary(MB)leprosy were selected after undergoing multidrug *** following data were collected:sociodemographic and clinical data;food intake;anthropometric measures(weight,height,and waist circumference);and lipid profile components(total cholesterol,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol[HDL-c],low-density lipoprotein cholesterol[LDL-c],and triglycerides).Results:Among the study population,there was a predominance of males(65.48%)aged 50 to 60 years,patients with an income of 248-496 American dollars(63.10%),patients who completed elementary school(65.48%),inactive patients(76.19%),non-smokers(46.43%),and non-drinking patients(69.05%).The levels(mean±standard deviation)of total cholesterol were 193.8±29.4 mg/dL in the PB form and 203.5±41.7 mg/dL in the MB *** mean LDL-c was 116.9±22.7 mg/dL in PB patients and 121±31.3 mg/dL in MB *** triglyceride levels were 123.4±45.2 mg/dL in the PB form and 147.4±88.9 mg/dL in the MB *** evaluation of nutritional status showed that 41.67%of the patients were eutrophic,while 55.96%had excess *** intake was significantly associated with HDL-c in male patients(P=0.0264)and with triglycerides in patients above the ideal weight(P=0.0049).conclusions:The risk of acquiring cVDs was observed to be high due to patients’excess weight and increased waist *** study will guide clinicians in the adequate treatment of patients with leprosy in order to avoid adverse cardiovascular events.

Oxidative Stress Biomarkers Response to Exercise in Brazilian Junior Soccer Players

The purpose was to analyze biomarkers of oxidative stress and muscle damage in junior soccer players undergoing intermittent exercise to verify the biochemical changes. Ten trained, healthy male soccer players (age 18.3 ± 0.7 years, body mass 74.3 ± 7.4 kg, height 175.5 ± 6.7 cm, body mass index 24.14 ± 1.15 kg/m2;mean ± SD) from the junior cate-gory of an elite Brazilian football association participated in this study. They accomplished a running test (Loughbo-rough Intermittent Shuttle Test) which simulates common soccer activity patterns. Blood samples were collected before, during and immediately after the exercise for glucose, lactate, creatinine, urea, ascorbic acid, total plasma antioxidant potential, lipid hydroperoxides, malondialdehyde and creatine kinase concentrations. During the exercise no changes were observed in biomarkers, but, immediately after there was a significant decrease in total plasma antioxidant potential (ranging from 650.37 ± 66.53 μmol.L-1 to 559.95 ± 91.38 μmol.L-1, p -1 to 8.35 ± 0.83 nmol.L-1 and from 272.01 ± 49.67 U.I.?L-1 to 304.65 ± 39.13 U.I.?L-1, p cise protocol induced significant changes in oxidative stress selected biomarkers in the early stage of recovery. Thus, taking into account that soccer players’ competitive careers initiate very precociously being under constant physical exhaustion, further research on junior soccer players’ physiology and health are important for more effective physical and nutritional programming.
