Clinical outcomes of cemented distal femur replacements with allpolyethylene tibial components for oncologic indications

BACKGROUND Endoprosthetic distal femoral replacement(DFR)is a well-established salvage procedure following resection of malignant tumors within the distal femur.Use of an all-polyethylene tibial(APT)component is cost-effective and avoids failure due to locking-mechanism issues and backside wear,but limits modularity and the option for late liner exchange.Due to a paucity of literature we sought to answer three questions:(1)what are the most common modes of implant failure for patients undergoing cemented DFR with APT for oncologic indications?(2)what is the survivorship,rate of all-cause reoperation,and rate of revision for aseptic loosening of these implants?And(3)Is there a difference in implant survivorship or patient demographics between cemented DFRs with APT performed as a primary reconstruction vs those performed as a revision procedure?AIM To assess outcomes of cemented DFRs with APT components used for oncologic indications.METHODS After Institutional Review Board approval,a retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent DFR between December 2000 to September 2020 was performed using a single-institutional database.Inclusion criteria consisted of all patients who underwent DFR with a GMRS®(Global Modular Replacement System,Stryker,Kalamazoo,MI,United States)cemented distal femoral endoprosthesis and APT component for an oncologic indication.Patients undergoing DFR for non-oncologic indications and patients with metal-backed tibial components were excluded.Implant failure was recorded using Henderson's classification and survivorship was reported using a competing risks analysis.RESULTS 55 DFRs(55 patients)with an average age of 50.9±20.7 years and average body mass index of 29.7±8.3 kg/m2 were followed for 38.8±54.9 mo(range 0.2-208.4).Of these,60.0%were female and 52.7%were white.The majority of DFRs with APT in this cohort were indicated for oncologic diagnoses of osteogenic sarcoma(n=22,40.0%),giant cell tumor(n=9,16.4%),and metastatic carcinoma(n=8,14.6%).DFR with APT implantation was per

Unlike European species,the potential of Nearctic syrphids as biological control agents is still poorly studied.However,the American hoverfly,Eupeodes americanus(wiedemann),has recently demonstrated promising traits as a biocontrol agent,notably against the foxglove aphid,Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach,on pepper.The present study aims to extend our knowledge of the American hoverfly by evaluating its potential as a biocontrol agent in a banker plant system against the melon aphid,Aphis gossypi Glover,in a greenhouse cucumber crop.The preimaginal development and voracity of E.americanus were compared when preying upon the focal prey/pest(A.gossypi)or the banker prey(bird cherry-oat aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi L.)by daily observations of larvae from egg to adult.Preimaginal development time,survival rate,and occurrence of deformation were similar on both prey species.The weight of third instar and pupae,however,was higher for larvae that fed on the banker prey.The ad libitum voracity of the syrphid larvae was generally very high and did not significantly differ between prey species,except for the third-instar larvae which consumed more focal prey.Results suggest that a banker plant system involving the bird cherry-oat aphid may be a promising tactic for utilizing E.americanus for melon aphid biocontrol.

Bird species present in urban parks are more colorful than urban avoiders:A test in the Argentinian Pampas

Bird plumage color has been assessed as a possible trait driving the presence of bird species in urban areas.Although some species can see the ultraviolet(UV) spectrum,the mentioned studies did not take into account UV reflectance when characterizing bird plumage.This study aimed to use a recent database of the colorfulness in passerines that incorporated the UV spectrum to compare bird colorfulness and other traits between urban parks and rural areas in Central-East Argentina.Birds in urban parks were surveyed in 51 parks in 6 cities during breeding and non-breeding seasons.A list of Passeriformes species from parks was created,and a list of urban avoider species was created from the bibliography.Species traits were body mass,clutch size,migratory status,nesting site,diet and habitat breadth,and plumage colorfulness.A total of 85 species were detected in the regional pool,of which 30 species were detected in urban parks.Bird species present in urban parks were more colorful than bird species only present in rural areas.In addition,bird presence in urban parks was positively related to their regional frequency and diet breadth.Moreover,urban presence was related to nesting on trees and buildings,whereas species not present in urban parks nested on the ground.The results obtained showed that bird color is significantly associated with presence of bird species in urban parks.

Owing to the persisting hype in pushing toward global carbon neutrality,the study scope of atmospheric science is rapidly expanding.Among numerous trending topics,energy meteorology has been attracting the most attention hitherto.One essential skill of solar energy meteorologists is solar power curve modeling,which seeks to map irradiance and auxiliary weather variables to solar power,by statistical and/or physical means.In this regard,this tutorial review aims to deliver a complete overview of those fundamental scientific and engineering principles pertaining to the solar power curve.Solar power curves can be modeled in two primary ways,one of regression and the other of model chain.Both classes of modeling approaches,alongside their hybridization and probabilistic extensions,which allow accuracy improvement and uncertainty quantification,are scrutinized and contrasted thoroughly in this review.

Convective drying of wood chips:Accelerating coupled DEM-CFD simulations with parametrized reduced single particle models

The simulation of industry-scale reactive bulks is challenging due to the complex interaction between fluid and particles.The particles in the bulk and their interaction with the fluid flow can be described by combined Discrete Element Method-Computational Fluid Dynamics(DEM-CFD)models.However,the computational cost of the Finite Volume(FV)methods deployed in these models can become prohibi-tively expensive,especially for high inner-particle resolution.Single particle Reduced Models(RMs)can be used to achieve both fast and accurate descriptions of the processes in each particle.As an example of bulk systems comprising heat and mass transfer,we compared FV and RM simulations for the drying of wood chips in a bulk reactor.A manifold-based nonlinear interpolation was applied to resolve changing boundary conditions for the RM.Our simulations showed that RMs provide accurate values for the thermodynamic state variables of the particles.Furthermore,the time required for the bulk simulation was reduced by 67%with the RMs.It is evident that simulations with high inner-particle resolution can be accelerated by RMs if manifold-based nonlinear interpolation is used to address changing boundary conditions.

Reacting particle systems play an important role in many industrial applications,for example biomass drying or the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals.The numerical modeling and simulation of such systems is therefore of great importance for an efficient,reliable,and environmentally sustainable operation of the processes.The complex thermodynamical,chemical,and flow processes that take place in the particles are a particular challenge in a simulation.Furthermore,typically a large number of particles is involved,rendering an explicit treatment of individual ones impossible in a reactor-level simulation.One approach for overcoming this challenge is to compute effective,physical parameters from single-particle,high-resolution simulations.This can be combined with model reduction methods if the dynamical behaviour of particles must be captured.Pore network models with their unrivaled resolution have thereby been used successfully as high-resolution models,for instance to obtain the macroscopic diffusion coeffcient of drying.Both parameter identification and model reduction have recently gained new impetus by the dramatic progress made in machine learning in the last decade.we report results on the use of neural networks for parameter identification and model reduction based on three-dimensional pore network models(PNM).we believe that our results provide a powerful complement to existing methodologies for reactor-level simulations with many thermally-thick particles.

Use of infrared thermography to detect reactions to stressful events:does animal personality matter?

The study of the relationship between animal stress and personality for free-ranging animals is limited and provides contrasting results.The perception of stressors by an individual may vary due to its personality,and certain personality traits may help individuals to better cope with them.Using non-invasive infrared thermography(IRT),we investigated the link between physiological and behavioral components expressed during an acute stress event by free-ranging Fremont’s squirrels(Tamiasciurus fremonti).we expected that,during the acute stress event of being approached by the researcher,individuals that showed a fast pace-of-life syndrome(bolder,more active,and less social/more aggressive)based on an arena test would exhibit stronger sympathetic-adrenal-medullary system reactivity showing a more intense stress-induced hyperthermia(high core body temperature and low peripheral temperature)than individuals with a slow pace of life(shy,less active,and more social).we successfully employed IRT technology to images of Fremont’s squirrels with identification of the individuals’body parts(eye,nose,ear,hind foot).However,we found no support for our hypothesis.Squirrels’body surface temperatures told us more about a squirrel’s external environment and less about the thermal state of the body in that environment following a stressful event.Further studies need to assess how to make IRT effective and efficient in the field and improve its performance in studying the relationships between physiology and personality in wildlife.

The glucagon-like peptide 1 is a pleiotropic hormone that has potent insulinotropic effects and is key in treating metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity.Glucagon-like peptide 1 exerts its effects by activating a membrane receptor identified in many tissues,including diffe rent brain regions.Glucagon-like peptide 1 activates several signaling pathways related to neuroprotection,like the support of cell growth/survival,enhancement promotion of synapse formation,autophagy,and inhibition of the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines,microglial activation,and apoptosis during neural morphogenesis.The glial cells,including astrocytes and microglia,maintain metabolic homeostasis and defe nse against pathogens in the central nervous system.After brain insult,microglia are the first cells to respond,followed by reactive astrocytosis.These activated cells produce proinflammato ry mediators like cytokines or chemokines to react to the insult.Furthermore,under these circumstances,mic roglia can become chro nically inflammatory by losing their homeostatic molecular signature and,consequently,their functions during many diseases.Several processes promote the development of neurological disorders and influence their pathological evolution:like the formation of protein aggregates,the accumulation of abnormally modified cellular constituents,the formation and release by injured neurons or synapses of molecules that can dampen neural function,and,of critical impo rtance,the dysregulation of inflammato ry control mechanisms.The glucagonlike peptide 1 receptor agonist emerges as a critical tool in treating brain-related inflammatory pathologies,restoring brain cell homeostasis under inflammatory conditions,modulating mic roglia activity,and decreasing the inflammato ry response.This review summarizes recent advances linked to the anti-inflammato ry prope rties of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor activation in the brain related to multiple sclerosis,Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,vascular dementia,or chronic migrai

Different no-till grain production systems with Urochloa spp.affect soil microbial community structure,biomass and activity in a tropical Ultisol

Integrated grain cropping systems promote soil health(SH)and sustainability.Microbial biomass and activity(MBA)and community structure(MCS)are key to SH.Integration of maize with Urochloa pastures strongly impacts MBA and MCS.MBA is more sensitive than MCS to shifts in grain cropping systems.Systems under continuous Urochloa increased microbial activity and AMF abundance.Tropical soils are prone to degradation.Adoption of conservation agricultural practices is essential to improve soil health,which is influenced by soil microbes.In this study we analyzed shifts in microbial biomass and activity(MBA)and microbial community structure(MCS)based on fatty acid methyl esthers(FAMEs)between five no-till agricultural practices:maize monoculture(MM);maize annualy intercropped with Urochloa decumbens(M/Ud);M/Ud with soybean rotation every other year(M/Ud-S);M/Ud keeping the pasture for the next two years(M/Ud-Ud-Ud);and maize intercropped with U.ruziziensis keeping the pasture for the next two years(M/Ur-Ur-Ur).Results indicated that MBA was affected by the inclusion of Urochloa intercropping and by rotation with soybean.Systems under a longer residence time with Urochloa in the field had higherβ-glucosidase activity and soil basal respiration,indicating a greater microbial activity.MCS was less affected than MBA by the investigated cropping systems.MCS changed only in the continuous pasture systems,which were enriched in arbuscular mycorrhyzal fungi(AMF).Additionally,the continuous pasture systems had lower microbial stress ratios than the other agricultural practices.In sum,our study showed that utilization of Urochloa spp.under longer periods in no-till agricultural practices contributes to increase microbial activity,AMF abundance and decrease microbial stress ratio.These changes are primarily beneficial for soil health.
