Phylogeny,taxonomy and diversification events in the Caliciaceae

Although the high degree of non-monophyly and parallel evolution has long been acknowledged within the mazaediate Caliciaceae(Lecanoromycetes,Ascomycota),a natural re-classification of the group has not yet been *** we constructed a multigene phylogeny of the Caliciaceae-Physciaceae clade in order to resolve the detailed relationships within the group,to propose a revised classification,and to perform a dating *** few characters present in the available fossil and the complex character evolution of the group affects the interpretation of morphological traits and thus influences the assignment of the fossil to specific nodes in the phylogeny,when divergence time analyses are carried *** fossil assignments resulted in very different time estimates and the comparison with the analysis based on a secondary calibration demonstrates that the most likely placement of the fossil is close to a terminal node rather than a basal placement in the Calicium *** dating analysis show two successive events giving rise to main clades of mazaediate taxa within the Caliciaceae,in the Upper-Lower Cretaceous boundary and in the *** a result of this study,Cyphelium is synonymized with Calicium,Acolium is resurrected,and the new genera Allocalicium and Pseudothelomma are *** new combinations are proposed:Acolium karelicum,Acolium marcianum,Allocalicium adaequatum,Calicium carolinianum,Calicium lecideinum,Calicium lucidum,Calicium notarisii,Calicium pinicola,Calicium trachyliodes,Pseudothelomma occidentale,Pseudothelomma ocellatum and Thelomma brunneum.A key for the mazaedium-producing Caliciaceae is included.

Implications of receptor for advanced glycation end products for progression from obesity to diabetes and from diabetes to cancer

Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are chronic pathologies with a high incidence *** share some pathological mechanisms,including hyperinsulinemia,the production and release of hormones,and *** above,over time,affects other systems of the human body by causing tissue hypoxia,low-grade inflammation,and oxidative stress,which lay the pathophysiological groundwork for *** leading causes of death globally are T2DM and *** main alterations of this pathological triad include the accumulation of advanced glycation end products and the release of endogenous alarmins due to cell death(i.e.,damage-associated molecular patterns)such as the intracellular proteins high-mobility group box protein 1 and protein S100 that bind to the receptor for advanced glycation products(rAGE)-a multiligand receptor involved in inflammatory and metabolic and neoplastic *** review analyzes the latest advanced reports on the role of rAGE in the development of obesity,T2DM,and cancer,with an aim to understand the intracellular signaling mechanisms linked with cancer *** review also explores inflammation,oxidative stress,hypoxia,cellular senescence,rAGE ligands,tumor microenvironment changes,and the“cancer hallmarks”of the leading tumors associated with *** assimilation of this information could aid in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to lower the morbidity and mortality associated with these diseases.

A case report of pulmonary coinfection of Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci

A case of pulmonary coinfection by Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci has been detected in an AIDS patient treated in the respiratory Intensive Care Unit of the Muniz *** diagnosis,the patient presented cough with mucopurulent expectoration,dyspnea,fever,bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on the chest X-ray,negative bacilloscopy for acid fast bacteria and a CD4^+ T lymphocytes count of 52 cells/μ *** microbiological diagnosis was achieved by microscopic observation of the respiratory secretions obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage,while the wet mount examination revealed rhabditiform and filariform larvae of the nematode and foamy exudates,pathognomonic of the pulmonary *** was the unique case of this association among about 3 000 samples performed in our laboratory in the last 10 years and diagnosed by *** complementary stains(a rapid modification of Grocott,Kinyoun and Giemsa) were applied to the smears after the diagnosis of mycotic and parasitary infections achieved by fresh *** physicians and microbiologists should take into account the possible coexistence of respiratory pathogens in immunocompromised patients,such as those with AIDS.

Local renin angiotensin system and sperm DNA fragmentation

The renin angiotensin system(rAS)appears to influence male fertility at multiple *** this work,we analyzed the relationship between the rAS and DNA *** male volunteers were divided into two groups(25 each):control(DNA fragmentation≤20%)and pathological(DNA fragmentation>20%)*** of five peptidases controlling rAS were measured fluorometrically:prolyl endopeptidase(which converts angiotensin[A]I and A II to A 1–7),neutral endopeptidase(NEP/CD10:A I to A 1–7),aminopeptidase N(APN/CD13:A III to A IV),aminopeptidase A(A II to A III)and aminopeptidase B(A III to A IV).Angiotensin-converting enzyme(A I to A II),APN/CD13 and NEP/CD10 were also assessed by semiquantitative cytometry and quantitative flow cytometry assays,as were the receptors of all rAS components:A II receptor type 1(AT1r),A II receptor type 2(AT2r),A IV receptor(AT4r or insulin-regulated aminopeptidase[IrAP]),(pro)renin receptor(Prr)and A 1–7 receptor or Mas receptor(Masr)None of the enzymes that regulate levels of rAS components,except for APN/CD13(decrease in fragmented cells),showed significant differences between both *** of rAS receptors revealed no significant differences in immunolabeling patterns between normozoospermic and fragmented *** of AT1r(94.3%normozoospermic vs 84.1%fragmented),AT4r(96.2%vs 95.3%)and Masr(97.4%vs 87.2%)was similar between the ***2r(87.4%normozoospermic vs 63.1%fragmented)and Prr(96.4%vs 48.2%)were higher in non-fragmented *** findings suggest that fragmented DNA spermatozoa have a lower capacity to respond to bioactive rAS peptides.

During the late months of last year,a novel coronavirus was detected in Hubei,*** virus,since then,has spread all across the globe forcing Word Health Organization(WHO)to declare COVID-19 outbreak a *** Spain,the virus started infecting the country slowly until rapid growth of infected people occurred in Madrid,Barcelona and other major *** government in an attempt to stop the rapssid spread of the virus and ensure that health system will not reach its capacity,implement strict measures by putting the entire country in *** duration of these measures,depends on the evolution of the virus in *** this study,a Deep Neural Network approach using Monte Carlo is proposed for generating a database to train networks for estimating the optimal parameters of a SIr epidemiology *** number of total infected people as of April 7 in Spain is considered as input to the Deep Neural *** adaptability of the model was evaluated using the latest data upon completion of this paper,i.e.,April *** date range for the peak of infected people(i.e.,active cases)based on the new information is estimated to be within 74 to 109 days after the first recorded case of COVID-19 in *** addition,a curve fitting measure based on the squared Euclidean distance indicates that according to the current data the peak might occur before the 86th ***,Deep Neural Networks have proven accurate and useful tools in handling big epidemiological data and for peak prediction estimates.

On the road towards the global analysis of human synapses

Synapses are essential units for the flow of information in the *** the last 70 years,synapses have been widely studied in multiple animal models including worms,fruit flies,and *** comparison,the study of human synapses has evolved significantly slower,mainly because of technical ***,three novel methods allowing the analysis of molecular,morphological,and functional properties of human synapses may expand our knowledge of the human ***,we briefly describe these methods,and evaluate how the information provided by each unique approach may contribute to the functional and anatomical analysis of the synaptic component of human brain *** particular,using tissue from cryopreserved human brains,synaptic plasticity can be studied in isolated synaptosomes by fluorescence analysis of single-synapse long-term potentiation（FASS-LTP）,and subpopulations of synapses can be thoroughly assessed in the ribbons of brain tissue by array tomography（AT）.Currently,it is also possible to quantify synaptic density in the living human brain by positron emission tomography（PET）,using a novel synaptic ***,data provided by FASS-LTP,AT,and PET may significantly contribute to the global understanding of synaptic structure and function in both healthy and diseased human brains,thus directly impacting translational research.

Affinity-Based Network Interfaces for Efficient Communication on Multicore Architectures

Improving the network interface performance is needed by the demand of applications with high communication requirements （for example, some multimedia, real-time, and high-performance computing applications）, and the availability of network links providing multiple gigabits per second bandwidths that could require many processor cycles for communication tasks. Multicore architectures, the current trend in the microprocessor development to cope with the difficulties to further increase clock frequencies and microarchitecture efficiencies, provide new opportunities to exploit the parallelism available in the nodes for designing efficient communication architectures. Nevertheless, although present OS network stacks include multiple threads that make it possible to execute network tasks concurrently in the kernel, the implementations of packet-based or connection-based parallelism are not trivial as they have to take into account issues related with the cost of synchronization in the access to shared resources and the efficient use of caches. Therefore, a common trend in many recent researches on this topic is to assign network interrupts and the corresponding protocol and network application processing to the same core, as with this affinity scheduling it would be possible to reduce the contention for shared resources and the cache misses. In this paper we propose and analyze several configurations to distribute the network interface among the different cores available in the server. These alternatives have been devised according to the affinity of the corresponding communication tasks with the location （proximity to the memories where the different data structures are stored） and characteristics of the processing core. As this approach uses several cores to accelerate the communication path of a given connection, it can be seen as complementary to those that consider several cores to simultaneously process packets belonging to either the same or different connections.

Lichinodium is a new lichenized lineage in the Leotiomycetes

Here,we show that Lichinodium(Lichinaceae,Lichinomycetes,Ascomycota)constitutes a formerly unrecognized lineage within the Leotiomycetes,thus being the first lichenized lineage recognized in the superclass Sordariomyceta(Leotiomycetes,Laboulbeniomycetes and Sordariomycetes).To infer the position of Lichinodium,we constructed two multilocus phylogenies based on six and five gene regions(nuLSU rDNA,nuSSU rDNA,mtSSU rDNA,rPB1,rPB2 and MCM7)including main Pezizomycotina groups in the first analysis and focusing secondly on a comprehensive selection of *** results show that Lichinodium is sister to *** discuss the morphological and ecological similarities between Lichinodium and other Leotiomycetes,and describe the new order Lichinodiales and family *** sister relationship between Sordariomycetes and Laboulbeniomycetes is here supported as it is the relationship between this clade and the *** results also support the polyphyly of Helotiales,the recognition of the Leotiales in a strict sense or the inclusion of the Triblidiales in *** photobionts of Lichinodium were sequenced for two genetic markers(rbcLX and 16S rDNA)and identified as rhizonema,a recently described genus of filamentous cyanobacteria belonging to *** studies revealed that the mycobiont-cyanobiont interface in Lichinodium does not produce haustoria,thus differing from a typical Lichinomycete(***).
