Payments for ecosystem services (PES) have been created worldwide to assist watershed management and improve or maintain water quality. Considering their importance, we conducted a holistic review of payment for water-related ecosystem services to understand how this instrument has been applied in watershed management worldwide. First, we identified the watershed management actions considered by the PES programs and the challenges of implementing water-related PES. After we identified the methods and criteria used to define priority areas for water-related PES. Our review considered articles published on the Web of Science from 2011 to 2022. We found 236 articles relating PES to water resources, highlighting the main water conservation strategies: native vegetation conservation, native vegetation restoration, and implementing best agricultural practices. The method most frequent was interview, followed by the use of technologies, document analysis, and hydrological models. Another significant result was that priority areas for receiving PES are mainly riparian zones, areas near or with native vegetation cover, areas with higher erosion potential, steep areas, and areas with socially vulnerable communities. This review was crucial to identify efficient water resource conservation strategies and potential challenges in the implementation and development of PES programs.

Computational Study of the Alkylation Reaction of the Nitrogen Mustard Mechlorethamine Using NBO Model and the QTAIM Theory

Substances known as nitrogen mustards turn into aziridinium ion through the intramolecular cyclization SN1. This ion reacts with the DNA preferably at the N7 position of the guanine, and because of this, it is an important antineoplastic agent. Based on this, the objective of this study is to quantify the interaction between the nitrogen mustard mechlorethamine and the guanine, using the NBO analysis and the QTAIM theory. The results of the NBO analysis showed that when the triangular cycle C4-N1-C5 is formed, there is some resonance among these atoms. This analysis also showed that the electronic transition at the sigma antibondingorbital σ* N1-C4 presents higher perturbation energy of second order, indicating that this bond is broken at the nucleophilic attack of the N7 nitrogen of guanine. The analysis that refers to the electron density obtained by the QTAIM theory indicates that the guanine proximity enables an electron density polarization of the BCPs aziridinium ion of mechlorethamine making that the frontal part of the ion becomes electron deficient. Finally, the relative results to the Laplacian of the electron density obtained by the QTAIM theory showed that the guanine approximation increases the “hole” factor at the C4, proving that the nucleophilic attack based on the “lump-hole” concept causes the region of that atom is the site of alkylation reaction.

Brazil has a great climatic diversity,with different demands for the adequate thermal performance of buildings,where the variables that impact it have different influences depending on the location and the type of wrapping *** a prior study of the thermal performance of a building is not done in the design phase,the unpleasant effects for the user appear after the building is ready,and bring with them problems such as internal temperatures that are too high in the summer or too low in the ***,the objective of this study is to provide recommendations for the application of ACM(aluminum composite material)composite panels and thermoacoustic(sandwich)tiles for external enclosure in the single-family residential sector.A high standard two-story residence with approximately 162 m^(2)per floor is used as a model and through computer simulations,utilizing the Energyplus program and observing the requirements of the NBR 15.575 performance standard,the thermal performance is *** factorial experiment was applied encompassing thermal performance variables such as absorptance,natural ventilation and thermophysical properties of the wrapping for three different climatic conditions:extreme winter climate,average climate and extreme summer *** results obtained show that the thermoacoustic roof tile keeps the internal temperature more stable independent of external oscillations,while the ACM panels follow the external oscillations,not meeting the expectations of thermal performance and needing passive treatments.

Long-Term Impact in Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Post Renal Transplantation

Purpose: The authors have evaluated the impact of the kidney transplantation associated with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, analyzing the complications, patients and graft survival. Methods: Retrospective study with 40 kidney transplant recipients with HCV infection and 40 kidney transplant recipients without HCV infection in the same post transplantation period. Results: the average follow-up after transplantation was 12.3 ± 4.5 years in patients with HCV infection and 12.5 ± 2.9 years in patients without HCV infection (p = 0.49). There was no statistical difference related to age and gender of the recipient nor donor age and type. The current renal function in patients with HCV infection was 47.3 ± 24.9 mL/min and 54.9 ± 27.2 mL/min in the HCV negative group (p = 0.54). The incidence of graft and patient survival was similar in both groups. The main cause of death in both groups was bacterial infection (10% in patients with HCV infection and 12.5% in HCV negative patients (p = 0.63). The most common complication in the two groups were acute allograft rejection and bacterial infection. The incidence of diabetes mellitus did not differ statistically in both groups. Abnormal liver enzymes levels and cirrhosis were observed only in patients with HCV infection. Conclusion: HCV infection did not impact patient or graft survival and post-transplant complications were similar in both groups during a mean follow-up period of 12 years.

Timor island has a tropical climate with relatively little rainfall and surface water is often not available throughout the year with groundwater relied on to fulfill daily domestic necessities. Geological reconnaissance mapping, hydrogeological investigation, and resistivity survey were undertaken in this study to systematically understand the hydrogeologic system (e.g., aquifer system, hydrostratigraphic units, groundwater flow direction) and its potentiality for water supply to human consumption in Alaua Kraik area, Baucau Municipality, Timor-Leste. Res2DInv, Dips 5.1, Surfer 16, Global Mapper 13, and ArcGIS 10.6 software was used to create geological reconnaissance maps, resistivity interpretation profile lines, and a hydrostratigraphic model. Rainfall precipitation, rainfall intensity, maximum rate of runoff and infiltration data are also used to interpret the groundwater potential in the study area. Two rock units occur in the study area;permeable alluvial deposits which unconformable overlie impermeable interbedded red marl-chert and calcareous shale. Structurally the area comprises the Lacamutu anticline, thrust fault, left slip fault, and normal right slip fault. Resistivity lines indicate three (3) types of lithologies: alluvial deposit, an intercalated layer of red marl-chert, calcareous shale and wet calcareous shale. The alluvial deposit and red marl-chert layer intercalated with calcareous shale units are classified as a hydrostratigraphic unit of intergranular and localised aquifer systems with low productivity. The groundwater flows through the existing fractures of the shear joint and tends to flow towards the left slip fault plane zone from the North to South direction. Much of the rainwater in the study area is most likely intercepted, evaporated, and or transpiration as opposed to running off and infiltrating into the ground. The article discusses the payment for ecosystem or environmental services markets in Brazil with a critical review, based on the ecological economics literature and focused on the concept of co-evolution. It is argued that the mainstream approach which considers ecosystem services as an externality has many shortcomings and fails to consider institutional and political aspects---all very critical for the design and implementation of a PES （Payment for ecosystem services） project or program. The complexity and the diversity of co-evolutionary relations between ecosystem services and socioeconomic activities are spatially or territorially specific. In this sense, different types of PES market have to adapt and coevolve with different ongoing development processes.
