Using first-principles calculations,we predict that tunable ferroelectricity can be realized in oxide perovskites with the Grenier structure and ordered oxygen ***,we show that R_(1/3)A_(2/3)FeO_(2.67) solids(where R is a rare-earth ion and A an alkaline-earth cation)exhibit polar phases,with a spontaneous polarization tunable by an appropriate choice of R and *** find that larger cations combined with small R elements lead to a maximum in the polarization and to a minimum in the energy barriers required to switch the sign of the *** arises from cooperative distortions of octahedral and tetrahedral units,where a combination of rotational and sliding modes controls the emergence of polarization within three-dimensional connected *** results indicate that polar Grenier phases of oxide perovskites are promising materials for microelectronic applications and,in general,for the study of phenomena emerging from breaking inversion symmetry in solids.

Transition metal oxides that exhibit a metal-to-insulator transition(MIT)as a function of oxygen vacancy concentration are promising systems to realize energy-efficient platforms for neuromorphic ***,the current lack of understanding of the microscopic mechanism driving the MIT hinders the realization of effective and stable *** we investigate defective cobaltites and we unravel the structural,electronic,and magnetic changes responsible for the MIT when oxygen vacancies are introduced in the *** show that,contrary to accepted views,cooperative structural distortions instead of local bonding changes are responsible for the MIT,and we describe the subtle interdependence of structural and magnetic ***,we present a model,based on first principles,to predict the required electric bias to drive the transition,showing good agreement with available measurements and providing a paradigm to establish design rules for low-energy cost devices.

A comprehensive description of the optical cycle of spin defects in solids requires the understanding of the electronic and atomistic structure of states with different spin multiplicity,including singlet states which are particularly challenging from a theoretical *** present a general framework,based on spin-flip time-dependent density function theory,to determine the excited state potential energy surfaces of the many-body singlet states of spin defects;we then predict the vibrationally resolved absorption spectrum between singlet shelving states of a prototypical defect,the nitrogen-vacancy center in *** results,which are in very good agreement with experiments,provide an interpretation of the measured spectra and reveal the key role of specific phonons in determining absorption processes,and the notable influence of non-adiabatic *** insights gained from our calculations may be useful in defining strategies to improve infrared-absorption-based magnetometry and optical pumping *** theoretical framework developed here is general and applicable to a variety of other spin defects and materials.

Fluorinated block copolymers composed of a polystyrene(Sx) first block and a polyacrylate second block carrying hydrophobic/lipophobic perfluorohexyl side chains(AF) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP). Fluorescence emission properties were imparted to the copolymers by incorporation in the second block of a julolidine-based fluorescent molecular rotor(JCBF). The synthesized block copolymers were used as the fluorescent low-surface energy thin top-layer onto a polystyrene bottom-layer to produce novel two-layer film vapochromic sensors. Contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) measurements revealed that the two-layer film surfaces were hydrophobic and lipophobic at the same time and highly enriched in fluorine content as a result of the effective segregation of the perfluorinated tails to the polymer-air *** fluorescence intensity of the two-layer films decreased significantly when they were exposed to vapours of organic solvents,including tetrahydrofurane, chloroform, and trifluorotoluene. However, an AF content-dependent sensing behaviour was also observed, with the two-layer films containing the copolymer with the shorter fluorinated block giving a more rapid and almost quantitative decrease in fluorescence variation. Fluorescence emission of the films was also proved to vary with *** the vapochromic and thermochromic responses were reversible after successive solicitation cycles. The fluorescence variation of the two-layer films was much more marked than that of the corresponding PS/JCBF blend, thus providing a system potentially applicable as highly sensitive volatile organic compound(VOC) sensor, thanks to the active role of the fluorinated block in promoting the migration of the fluorophore to the outermost surface layers.

Alcohol consumption is a predominant etiological factor in the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases, resulting in fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) involves complex and still unclear biological processes, the oxidative metabolites of ethanol such as acetaldehyde and reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a preeminent role in the clinical and pathological spectrum of ALD. Ethanol oxidative metabolism influences intracellular signaling pathways and deranges the transcriptional control of several genes, leading to fat accumulation, fibrogenesis and activation of innate and adaptive immunity. Acetaldehyde is known to be toxic to the liver and alters lipid homeostasis, decreasing peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and increasing sterol regulatory element binding protein activity via an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-dependent mechanism. AMPK activation by ROS modulates autophagy, which has an important role in removing lipid droplets. Acetaldehyde and aldehydes generated from lipid peroxidation induce collagen synthesis by their ability to form protein adducts that activate transforming-growth-factor-β-dependent and independent profibrogenic pathways in activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Furthermore, activation of innate and adaptive immunity in response to ethanol metabolism plays a key role in the development and progression of ALD. Acetaldehyde alters the intestinal barrier and promote lipopolysaccharide (LPS) translocation by disrupting tight and adherent junctions in human colonic mucosa. Acetaldehyde and LPS induce Kupffer cells to release ROS and proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines that contribute to neutrophils infiltration. In addition, alcohol consumption inhibits natural killer cells that are cytotoxic to HSCs and thus have an important antifibrotic function in the liver. Ethanol metabolism may also interfere with ce
