Brain plasticity-A universal tool with many variations:The study of brain plasticity has been gaining interest since almost a century and has now reached a huge amount of information(>80,000 results in PubMed).Overall,different types of plasticity,including stem cell-driven genesis of new neurons(adult neurogenesis),cells in arrested maturation(dormant neurons),neuro-glial and synaptic plasticity,can coexist and contribute to grant plastic changes in the brain,from a cellular to system level(Benedetti and Couillard-despres,2022;Bonfanti et al.,2023).

The role of copper element has been an increasingly relevant topic in recent years in the fields of human and animal health, for both the study of new drugs and innovative food and feed supplements. This metal plays an important role in the central nervous system, where it is associated with glutamatergic signaling, and it is widely involved in inflammatory processes. Thus, diseases involving copper(Ⅱ) dyshomeostasis often have neurological symptoms, as exemplified by Alzheimer's and other diseases(such as Parkinson's and Wilson's diseases). Moreover, imbalanced copper ion concentrations have also been associated with diabetes and certain types of cancer, including glioma. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive overview of recent results that show the importance of these metal ions in several pathologies, mainly Alzheimer's disease, through the lens of the development and use of copper chelators as research compounds and potential therapeutics if included in multi-target hybrid drugs. Seeing how copper homeostasis is important for the well-being of animals as well as humans, we shortly describe the state of the art regarding the effects of copper and its chelators in agriculture, livestock rearing, and aquaculture, as ingredients for the formulation of feed supplements as well as to prevent the effects of pollution on animal productions.

BACKGROUNd The CAR-OLT score predicts major adverse cardiovascular events 1 year after liver transplant(LT).AIM To test the hypothesis that the CAR-OLT score may help avoid cardiac stress tests in LT *** This retrospective single-center cohort study included all adult patients undergoing elective evaluation for first cadaveric donor orthotopic LT for liver cirrhosis with or without hepatocellular carcinoma at Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli Istituto di Ricerca e Cura a Carattere Scientifico in Rome,*** contraindications for LT listing were defined after a center-specific cardiac workup,which included cardiac stress tests for most *** diagnostic accuracy of the CAR-OLT score was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic(AUROC)*** A total of 342 LT candidates were evaluated between 2015 and 2019,with a moderate cardiovascular risk profile(37%diabetes,34%hypertension,22%obesity).Of these,80(23%)candidates underwent coronary ***-one(6%)candidates were given cardiac contraindications to LT listing,48%of which were due to coronary artery *** CAR-OLT score predicted cardiac contraindications to LT listing with an AUROC of *** optimal cut-off for sensitivity was a CAR-OLT score≤23,which showed a 99%negative predictive value for cardiac contraindications to LT listing.A total of 84(25%)LT candidates with a CAR-OLT score≤23 underwent 87 non-invasive cardiac tests and 13 coronary angiographies pre-listing,with estimated costs of approximately 48000€.The estimated savings per patient was€574.70 for the Italian National Health *** A CAR-OLT score≤23 can identify LT candidates who can be safely listed without the need for cardiac stress tests,providing time and cost *** findings require external validation.

Carbon nanoparticles(CNPs)have received considerable attention due to their exceptional qualities and *** unique physical and chemical characteristics make them extremely intriguing as materials for numerous high-potential applications,such as electronics and gas *** study focused on producing carbon-based nanomaterial devices by deposition of flame-formed carbon nanoparticles on a suitable substrate and investigating their gas-sensing *** were produced in a fuel-rich laminar premixed ethylene/air flame and the collected CNP film was morphologically and electrically *** electrical conductivity of the film was investigated as a function of ethanol concentration and amount of deposited ***,CNP films exhibited high sensitivity to ambient ethanol gas concentrations,and rapid recovery times at room temperature,and showed a sensitivity increasing with the amount of deposited material and the surface *** findings demonstrate the high potential of combustion-generated CNPs as building materials for low-cost and portable ethanol sensors.

We present the Novel-Materials-discovery(NOMAd)Artificial-Intelligence(AI)Toolkit,a web-browser-based infrastructure for the interactive AI-based analysis of materials-science findable,accessible,interoperable,and reusable(FAIR)*** AI Toolkit readily operates on the FAIR data stored in the central server of the NOMAd Archive,the largest database of materials-science data worldwide,as well as locally stored,users’owned *** NOMAd Oasis,a local,stand-alone server can be also used to run the AI *** using Jupyter notebooks that run in a web-browser,the NOMAd data can be queried and accessed;data mining,machine learning,and other AI techniques can be then applied to analyze *** infrastructure brings the concept of reproducibility in materials science to the next level,by allowing researchers to share not only the data contributing to their scientific publications,but also all the developed methods and analytics *** reproducing published results,users of the NOMAd AI toolkit can modify the Jupyter notebooks toward their own research work.

Surveying existing rockfall flexible barriers:a combined method for gathering data,managing information and prioritizing maintenance

Rockfall risk is often mitigated and managed by employing defensive structures to catch falling blocks(i.e.,passive works).due to the widely spread nature of rockfall,the presence of such defensive structures is a common sight,especially in mountain *** most common passive defensive structures are rockfall flexible barriers,due to their significant flexibility and *** protective performance of said structures,though,can be severely reduced by prolonged exposure to weathering agents,vegetation growth,and rockfall impacts:these issues must be addressed by performing *** a view to optimizing the maintenance procedure,the need arises for a tool capable of providing useful information regarding the condition of existing rockfall barriers,in the simplest yet most complete and comprehensive way *** present work provides such a tool,alongside the required instruments for it to function ***,it consists of a survey spreadsheet to be used to collect raw data based on visual inspection of the barriers,coupled with the methodology to score their conditions and to produce a database with which to manage and plan their *** application to a suitable case study in the Central Italian Alps,featuring a number of barriers in different conditions,is then presented,and its results are discussed.

Heterocyclic compounds as key structures for the interaction with old and new targets in Alzheimer＇s disease therapy

Nowadays, Alzheimer＇s disease（Ad） is widely recognized as a real social problem. In fact, only five drugs are FdA approved for the therapy of this widespread neurodegenerative disease, but with low results so far. Three of them（rivastigmine, donepezil and galantamine） are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, memantine is a N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist, whereas the fifth formulation is a combination of donepezil with memantine. The prevention and treatment of Ad is the new challenge for pharmaceutical industry, as well as for public institutions, physicians, patients, and their families. The discovery of a new and safe way to cure this neurodegenerative disease is urgent and should not be delayed further. Because of the multiple origin of this pathology, a multi-target strategy is currently strongly pursued by researchers. In this review, we have discussed new structures designed to better the activity on the classical Ad targets. We have also examined old and new potential drugs that could prove useful future for the therapy of the pathology by acting on innovative, not usual, and not yet fully explored targets like peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor（PPARs）.
