A new additive technique for manufacturing of short fibre-reinforced ultra-refractory ceramics is *** technique allows the fabrication of solvent-free,thin(~100µm),flexible,and easy-to-handle sheets suitable for fabricating homogeneous or layered structures.A large range of compositions,in terms of matrix and fibre volumetric contents,from 0%to 100%is *** amount of short carbon fibres incorporated in the sheets ranged from 20 to 50 vol%,whereas the fibre length ranged from 3 to 5 *** matrix composition investigated with this technique consisted of ZrB_(2)/SiC/Y_(2)O_(3).By increasing the fibre amount from 35 to 50 vol%,an improvement of mechanical properties was ***-point flexural strength(σ)ranged from 107 to 140 MPa,depending on the amount of carbon fibres(Cf).The same holds true for the work of fracture,ranging from 108 to 253 J/m^(2).Functionally graded composites were fabricated by overlapping sheets with a fibre gradient(0%-50%).

Ultra-high-temperature ceramic matrix composites(UHTCMCs)based on a ZrB_(2)/SiC matrix have been investigated for the fabrication of reusable nozzles for *** de Laval nozzle prototypes,obtained by sintering with either hot pressing(HP)or spark plasma sintering(SPS),were tested 2-3 times in a hybrid rocket motor for proving *** were extracted after oxidation tests to study the microstructural changes and oxidative and thermomechanical stresses induced by the repeated *** to a reference graphite nozzle,no measurable erosion was observed for the UHTCMC-based *** oxidation mechanism consisted in the formation of a ZrO_(2)intermediate layer,with a liquid silicon oxide(SiO_(2))layer on the surface that was displaced by the action of the gas flux towards the divergent part of the nozzle,protecting it from further *** specimens obtained by HP and SPS displayed similar performance,with very slight differences,which were attributed to small changes in *** tests demonstrated the capability of complex-shaped prototypes made of the developed UHTCMCs to survive repeated exposure to environments representative of a realistic space propulsion application,for overall operating time up to 30 s,without any failure nor measurable erosion,making a promising step towards the development of reusable rocket components.

In recent years, the need to identify molecular markers characterized by high sensitivity and specificity in detecting and monitoring early and colorectal cancer lesions has increased. Up to now, none of the markers or panels of markers analyzed have met the rigorous standards required of a screening program. The important discovery of circulating nucleic acids in biological fluids has aroused intense scientific interest because of their usefulness in malignant and non malignant diseases. Over time, their yield and stability have been identified and compared with other “standard” biomarkers. The analysis of circulating DNA from blood and stool is a relatively simple and non-invasive procedure, representing a very attractive marker to detect genetic and epigenetic mutations and to monitor disease progression. A correlation between blood and stool biomarkers could also help to enhance currently available diagnostic approaches. However, various processing and analytic problems need to be resolved before such an approach can be applied in clinical practice.

In this paper, a numerical study of flow in the turbulence boundary layer with adverse and pressure gradients （APGs） is conducted by using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes （RANS） equations. This research chooses six typical turbulence models, which are critical to the computing precision, and to evaluating the issue of APGs. Local frictional resistance coefficient is compared between numerical and experimental results. The same comparisons of dimensionless averaged velocity profiles are also performed. It is found that results generated by Wilcox （2006） k-co are most close to the experimental data. Meanwhile, turbulent quantities such as turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds-stress are also studied.

Peliosis hepatis is a rare condition characterized by dilatation of hepatic sinusoids and blood-filled spaces in the liver mainly observed in subjects exposed to toxic substances or estrogens, which is frequently asymptomatic. Non-cirrhotic idiopathic portal hypertension （NCIPH） is also a vascular disease of the liver rarely observed in European countries, which is usually diagnosed only when the hemorrhagic complications of portal hypertension occur. We report a case of NCIPH in a young Caucasian male who was diagnosed with liver peliosis, showing ultrasonographic and endoscopic signs of portal hypertension four years after. A second biopsy was diagnostic for NCIPH. Even if the pathogenesis remains obscure, peliosis hepatis can be considered as an early sign of vascular disease of the liver, which may progress to more definite conditions.

AIM:To investigate the effect of transjugular intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIPS) on malnutrition in portal hypertensive cirrhotic ***: Twenty-one patients with liver cirrhosis and clinical indications for TIPS insertion were investigated before and 1, 4, 12, 52 wk after TIPS. For each patient we assayed body composition parameters [dry lean mass, fat mass, total body water (TBW)], routine liver and kidney function tests, and free fatty acids (FFA). Glucose and insulin were measured for the calculation of the homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR); liver function was measured by the galactose elimination capacity (GEC); the severity of liver disease was graded by model for end-stage liver disease (MELD).RESULTS: Porto-systemic gradient decreased after TIPS (6.0±2.1 mmHg vs 15.8±4.8 mmHg, P<0.001). Patients were divided in two groups according to initial body mass index. After TIPS, normal weight patients had an increase in dry lean mass (from 10.9±5.9 kg to 12.7±5.6 kg, P=0.031) and TBW (from 34.5±7.6 L to 40.2±10.8 L,P=0.007), as well as insulin (from 88.9±49.2 pmol/L to 164.7±107.0 pmol/L,P=0.009) and HOMA-IR (from 3.36%±2.18% to 6.18%±4.82%,P=0.023). In overweight patients only FFA increased significantly (from 0.59±0.24 mmol/L to 0.93±0.34 mmol/L, P=0.023).CONCLUSION: TIPS procedure is effective in lowering portal pressure in patients with portal hypertension and improves body composition without significant changes in metabolic parameters.

Objective:To examine the magnitude and some risk factors of porcine eysticercosis in Bafut and Santa,two sub-divisions noted for pig farming in the North West Region of ***: A total of 499 pigs in 300 households were examined by tongue inspection and serologically by *** was sought on the age and sex of the animals,prevailing husbandry systems,types of feed,the state of each pen and the state of ***,a questionnaire was administered to the farmers to determine their awareness on taeniasis/cysticercosis and related ***:The prevalence of the disease was significantly higher in Santa(10.2%) than in Bafut(4.2%),although there was a higher level of awareness in both localities(62.3%).Age of pigs,traditional rearing systems(roaming,tethered,earth floor pen,raised floor pen),faecal disposal in the environmenl and poor sanitation significantly influenced the seroprevalence of porcine cysticercosis in both *** farmers(79.7%) used a combination of concentrate, grass and kitchen waste to feed *** loss from porcine cysticercosis was estimated at 346 900 CFA representing 2%of total ***:Control measures advanced here include sensitization campaigns,periodic examination and treatment of infected pigs by veterinarians,improved husbandry systems,proper use of standard latrines regularly inspected by sanitary officers,and sound hygienic and sanitary practices.

Liver hemangioma and vascular liver diseases in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

AIM:To investigate whether systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with benign focal liver lesions and vascular liver diseases, since these have been occasionally reported in SLE patients. METHODS:Thirty-five consecutive adult patients with SLE and 35 age-and sex-matched healthy controls were evaluated. Hepatic and portal vein patency and presence of focal liver lesions were studied by colour-Doppler ultrasound, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance were used to refine the diagnosis, clinical data of SLE patients were reviewed. RESULTS:Benign hepatic lesions were common in SLE patients (54% vs 14% controls, P < 0.0001), withhemangioma being the most commonly observed lesion in the two groups. SLE was associated with the presence of single hemangioma [odds ratios (OR) 5.05; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.91-13.38] and multiple hemangiomas (OR 4.13; 95% CI 1.03-16.55). Multiple hemangiomas were associated with a longer duration of SLE (9.9 ± 6.5 vs 5.5 ± 6.4 years; P = 0.04). Imaging prior to SLE onset was available in 9 patients with SLE and hemangioma, showing absence of lesions in 7/9. The clinical data of our patients suggest that SLE pos- sibly plays a role in the development of hemangioma. In addition, a Budd-Chiari syndrome associated with nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH), and a NRH associated with hepatic hemangioma were observed, both in patients hospitalized for abdominal symptoms, suggesting that vascular liver diseases should be specifically investigated in this population. CONCLUSION:SLE is associated with 5-fold increased odds of liver hemangiomas, suggesting that these might be considered among the hepatic manifestations of SLE.

Celiac disease(CD) is frequently associated with neurological disorders,but very few reports concern the association with ischemic stroke.A 26-year-old woman affected by CD with secondary amenorrhea,carrier of a homozygous 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase mutation with hyperhomocysteinemia,was affected by two occipital ischemic strokes within a period of 5 *** the time of the second stroke,while she was being treated with folic acid,acetylsalicylic acid and a gluten-free diet,she had left hemianopsia,left hemiparesthesias,and gait *** magnetic resonance imaging showed a subacute right occipital ischemic lesion,which was extended to the dorsal region of the right thalamus and the ipsilateral thalamocapsular *** and deamidated gliadin peptide antibodies were no longer present,while antinuclear antibodies,antineuronal antibodies and immune circulating complexes were only slightly *** the patient was taking folic acid,her homocysteine levels were almost normal and apparently not sufficient alone to explain the clinical event.A conventional cerebral angiography showed no signs of ***,rare causes of occipital stroke in young patients,such as Fabry's disease and mitochondrial myopathy,encephalomyopathy,lactic acidosis and stroke-like symptoms,were also excluded by appropriate ***,the most probable cause for the recurrent strokes in this young woman remained CD,although the mechanisms involved are still *** two main hypotheses concern malabsorption(with consequent deficiency of vitamins known to exert neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects) and immunemediated *** should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of ischemic stroke in young patients.
