The role of weather and density dependence on population dynamics of Alpine-dwelling red deer

The dynamics of red deer Cervus elaphus populations has been investigated across different environmental conditions,with the notable exception of the European *** the population dynamics of mountain-dwelling ungulates is typically influenced by the interaction between winter severity and density,the increase of temperatures and the reduction of snowpack occurring on the Alps since the 1980s may be expected to alter this pattern,especially in populations dwelling at medium-low *** advantage of a 29-year time series of spring count data,we explored the role of weather stochasticity and density dependence on growth rate and vital rates(mortality and weaning success),and the density-dependent variation in body mass in a red deer population of the Italian *** interaction between increasing values of density and snow depth exerted negative and positive effects on growth and mortality rates,respectively,while weaning success was negatively affected by increasing values of density,female-biased sex ratio and snow *** mass of males and females of different age classes declined as population size *** data support the role of winter severity and density dependence as key components of red deer population dynamics,and provide insight into the species’ecology on the European *** the recent decline of snowpack on the Alpine Region,the negative impacts of winter severity and population abundance on growth rrate(possibly mediated by the density-dependent decline in body mass)confirms the importance of overwinter mortality in affecting the population dynamics of Alpine-dwelling red deer.

Estimation of carbon storage of forest biomass for voluntary carbon markets:preliminary results

Estimating the carbon storage of forests is essential to support climate change mitigation and promote the transition into a low-carbon emission *** achieve this goal,voluntary carbon markets(VCMs)are *** are promoted by a spontaneous demand,not imposed by binding targets,as the regulated *** Italy,only in Veneto and Piedmont Regions(Northern Italy),VCMs through forestry activities were carried *** Camonica District(Northern Italy,Lombardy Region)is ready for a local VCM,but carbon storage of its forests was never *** aim of this work was to estimate the total carbon storage(TCS;t C ha^−1)of forest biomass of Valle Camonica District,at the stand level,taking into account:(1)aboveground biomass,(2)belowground biomass,(3)deadwood,and(4)*** developed a user-friendly model,based on site-specifi c primary(measured)data,and we applied it to a dataset of 2019 stands extracted from 45 Forest Management *** results showed that,in 2016,the TCS achieved 76.02 t C ha^−*** aboveground biomass was the most relevant carbon pool(48.86 t C ha^−1;64.27%of TCS).From 2017 to 2029,through multifunctional forest management,the TCS could increase of 2.48 t C ha^−1(+3.26%).In the same period,assuming to convert coppices stands to high forests,an additional TCS of 0.78 t C ha^−1(equal to 2.85 t CO 2 ha^−1)in the aboveground biomass could be achieved without increasing forest *** additional carbon could be certifi ed and exchanged on a VCM,contributing to climate change mitigation at a local level.

Unlikely heroes on the long and winding road to potatoinbreeding

Conversion of potato from a tetraploid, heterozygous, vegetatively propagated crop to a diploid F1hybrid, propagated via botanical seed, would constitute a considerable advance for global agriculture,but faces multiple challenges. One such challenge is the difficulty in inbreeding potato, which involvespurging deleterious alleles from its genome. This commentary discusses possible reasons for thisdifficulty and highlights a recent sequence-based effort to classify SNP variation, in potato germplasm,according to its deleterious potential. Tools and strategies connected to this database may facilitatedevelopment of F1 hybrids.

Consumer attitudes towards the mountain product label: Implications for mountain development

To protect and promote the originality and authenticity of mountain foodstuffs, the European Union set Regulation No 1151/2012 to create the optional quality term "mountain product". Our research aimed at exploring the attractiveness of the mountain product label for consumers, considering both attitude towards the label itself and purchase intentions. We propose a model to investigate relationships between four latent constructs-mountain attractiveness, mountain food attractiveness, attitude towards the mountain product label, and purchase intention-which have been tested, thus confirming the statistical relevance of the relationships. All 47 items selected for describing the latent constructs are suitable for this purpose. Ridge and LASSO results also show that 17 items of the first three constructs are relevant in explaining purchase intentions. Some contextual variables, such as age, income, geographical origin of consumers, and knowledge of mountain products and mountains for tourism purposes, can positively influence consumers’ behavior. These findings could support the design of mountain development strategies, in particular marketing actions for both the product and the territory.

Isogeometric Analysis of a Phase Field Model for Darcy Flows with Discontinuous Data

The authors consider a phase field model for Darcy flows with discontinuous data in porous media;specifically,they adopt the Hele-Shaw-Cahn-Hillard equations of[Lee,Lowengrub,Goodman,Physics of Fluids,2002]to model flows in the Hele-Shaw cell through a phase field formulation which incorporates discontinuities of physical data,namely density and viscosity,across *** the spatial approximation of the problem,the authors use NURbS—based isogeometric analysis in the framework of the Galerkin method,a computational framework which is particularly advantageous for the solution of high order partial differential equations and phase field problems which exhibit sharp but smooth *** this paper,the authors verify through numerical tests the sharp interface limit of the phase field model which in fact leads to an internal discontinuity interface problem;finally,they show the efficiency of isogeometric analysis for the numerical approximation of the model by solving a benchmark problem,the so-called"rising bubble"problem.

The role of the ipsilaterally descending motor pathways in the recovery mechanisms after unilateral hemispheric damage is still poorly understood. Motor output reorganization was investigated in a 56-year-old male patient with acquired unilateral hemispheric atrophy due to Rasmussen encephalitis. In particular,the ipsilateral corticospinal pathways were explored using focal transcranial magnetic stimulation. In the first dorsal interosseous and wrist extensors muscles, the median amplitudes of the ipsilateral motor evoked potentials induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation in the patient were higher than those of 10 age-matched healthy control subjects. In the biceps brachii muscle, the median amplitudes of the ipsilateral motor evoked potentials were the second largest in the patient compared to the controls. This study demonstrated a reinforcement of ipsilateral motor projections from the unaffected motor cortex to the hemiparetic hand in a subject with acquired unihemispheric cortical damage.

Heterocyclic compounds as key structures for the interaction with old and new targets in Alzheimer＇s disease therapy

Nowadays, Alzheimer＇s disease（AD） is widely recognized as a real social problem. In fact, only five drugs are FDA approved for the therapy of this widespread neurodegenerative disease, but with low results so far. Three of them（rivastigmine, donepezil and galantamine） are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, memantine is a N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, whereas the fifth formulation is a combination of donepezil with memantine. The prevention and treatment of AD is the new challenge for pharmaceutical industry, as well as for public institutions, physicians, patients, and their families. The discovery of a new and safe way to cure this neurodegenerative disease is urgent and should not be delayed further. because of the multiple origin of this pathology, a multi-target strategy is currently strongly pursued by researchers. In this review, we have discussed new structures designed to better the activity on the classical AD targets. We have also examined old and new potential drugs that could prove useful future for the therapy of the pathology by acting on innovative, not usual, and not yet fully explored targets like peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor（PPARs）.
