Bilateral complete type discoid medial menisci： an adult patient with tears in both knees

Adiscoid meniscus, found in 1%-5% of the population, .is a human anatomic variant that usually affects thelateral meniscus of the knee. A discoid meniscus is more prone to injury than a normally shaped meniscus. In 1941,1 Cave and Staples first reported discoid medial meniscus. A bilateral discoid medial meniscus is extremely rare. The first case of bilateral discoid medial meniscus was reported by Murdoch in 1956.2 Since then, no more than 20 case reports of bilateral discoid medial menisci have been published to date, and most have been single case reports.3 Treatment of a torn discoid medial meniscus is similar to the treatment of a tom lateral meniscus of the knee. In cases where there is a significant disability, surgical excision may be required. Traditionally, the treatment of choice for symptomatic torn discoid meniscus has been open total or partial meniscectomy. Currently, arthroscopic partial meniscectomy is commonly used. Either meniscectomy or conservative method for treatment of a discoid medial meniscus with no tear is a debatable issue.3 A 39-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for intermittent swelling and pain of his right knee in 1999. He had a history of twisting injury on the affected knee 10 years before the admission, but the symptoms were not significant at that time. However, one year ago, on and off swelling with pain had gradually developed in his right knee, worsening with long distance walking and sports activities. Sometimes he felt that the knee was ＂giving way＂. Due to increasing discomfort interfering with his daily life, he was referred to us by his doctor. Physical examination of the patient＇s right knee showed atrophy of the musculus quadriceps femoris compared to the opposite side, medial tibiofemoral joint line tenderness, a range of motion from , and positive McMurray sign. The patient had no complaints on his opposite knee and physical examination did not reveal any abnormalities. MRI scan showed discoid medial meniscus

Reactivity of ambient volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in summer of 2004 in Beijing

Ambient volatile organic compounds （VOCs） were sampled at six sites in Beijing in the summer of 2004 and analyzed by GCMS. The chemical reactivities of 73 quantified VOCs species were evaluated by OH loss rates （LOH） and ozone formation potentials （OFPs）. Top 15 reactive species, mainly alkenes and aromatics, were identified by these two methods, and accounted for more than 70% of total reactivity of VOCs. In urban areas, isoprene was the most reactive species in term of OH loss rate, contributing 11.4% to the LOH of VOCs. While toluene, accounting for 9.4% of OFPs, appeared to have a long-time role in the photochemical processes. Tongzhou site is obviously influenced by local chemical industry, but the other five sites showed typical urban features influenced mainly by vehicular emissions.

Expression of connective tissue growth factor in tumor tissues is an independent predictor of poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer

AIM: To examine the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), also known as CCN2, in gastric carcinoma (GC), and the correlation between the expression of CTGF, clinicopathologic features and clinical outcomes of patients with GC. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two GC patients were included in the present study. All patients were followed up for at least 5 years. Proteins of CTGF were detected using the Powervision two-step immunostaining method. RESULTS: Of the specimens from 122 GC patients analyzed for CTGF expression, 58 (58/122, 47.5%) had a high CTGF expression in cytoplasm of gastric carcinoma cells and 64 (64/122, 52.5%) had a low CTGF expression. Patients with a high CTGF expression showed a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis than those with a low CTGF expression (P = 0.032). Patients with a high CTGF expression had significantly lower 5-year survival rate than those with a low CTGF expression (27.6% vs 46.9%, P = 0.0178), especially those staging Ⅰ+Ⅱ+Ⅲ (35.7% vs 65.2%, P = 0.0027). CONCluSION: GC patients with an elevated CTGF expression have more lymph node metastases and a shorter survival time. CTGF seems to be an independent prognostic factor for the successful differentiation of high-risk GC patients staging Ⅰ+Ⅱ+Ⅲ. Over-expression of CTGF in human GC cells results in an increased aggressive ability.

Sol-gel synthesis and photoluminescence characterization of La_2Ti_2O_7:Eu^(3+) nanocrystals

Eu3＋ doped La2Ti2O7 nanocrystals with pure monoclinic phase and size of about 100 nm were prepared by a citric acid （CA） assisted sol-gel method. Techniques of thermo-gravimetric （TG） and differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, as well as transmission electron microscopy （TEM） were employed to characterize the as-synthesized nanoparticles. Furthermore, photoluminescence （PL） performances of the Eu3＋ doped La2Ti2O7 nanocrystals were evaluated with focus on the effects of calcination temperature and Eu3＋ doping concentration on the photoluminescence properties.

Pericryptal Fibroblast Sheath in Intestinal Metaplasia,Dysplasia and Carcinoma of the Stomach

Objective： To investigate the existence of pericryptal fibroblasts sheath （PCFS） in normal gastric mucosa, intestinal metaplasia （IM）, indefinite for dysplasia （I-Dys）, low grade dysplasia （L-Dys）, high grade dysplasia （H-Dys） and gastric cancer （GC）, and its association with gastric carcinogenesis. Methods： In this study, we examined the existence of PCFS in normal gastric mucosa （N=10）, IM （N=26）, I-Dys （N=16）, L-Dys （N=13）, H-Dys （N=21） and GC （N=145） using immunohistochemical staining for two smooth muscle markers, alpha smooth muscle actin（α-SMA） and high molecular weight caldesmon （h-CD）. The significance of PCFS was discussed, especially in association with gastric carcinogenesis. Results： The PCFS was recognized in 65.4%（17/26） of IM, 62.5%（10/16） of I-Dys and 23.1% （3/13） of L-Dys respectively. No PCFS was detected in H-Dys and GC. The PCFS was gradually reduced in IM, Dys and GC in sequence （P〈0.0001）. Conclusion： The PCFS is associated with the differentiation of epithelium and involved in gastric carcinogenesis via epithelial-mesenchymal interaction.

Hydrochemical Characteristics and Evolution of Underground Brine in Lop Nur,Northwestern China

Lop Nur is located at the eastmost end of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang,Northwestern *** study reviews the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution of underground brine in Lop Nur,based on analytical data from 429 water samples(mainly brine).It is found that in the NE-SW direction,from the periphery to the luobei sub-depression,while the hydrochemical type varies from the sodium sulfate subtype(S)to the magnesium sulfate subtype(M),the corresponding brine in the phase diagram transfers from the thenardite phase(Then)area,through the bloedite phase(Blo),epsomite phase(Eps),picromerite phase(Picro),finally reaching the sylvite phase(Syl)*** for the degree of evolution,the sequence is the peripheryluobei horizontally and the overlying glauberite brineying clastic brine *** is concluded that the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the brine have evidently been affected through the effects of evaporation and altitude,as well as the changes in local water circulation in recent *** and chloride isotopic compositions show that the glauberite brine is formed under more arid conditions than the clastic *** strontium isotopic composition indicates that the Lop Nur brine primarily originates from surface water;however,deep recharge may also be involved in the evolution of the brine,according to previous noble gas *** is confirmed that the brine in Lop Nur has become enriched with potassium prior to halite precipitation over the full course of the salt lake's *** on chemical compositions of brine from drillhole LDK01 and previous lithological studies,the evolution of the salt lake can be divided into three stages and it is inferred that the brine in Lop Nur may have undergone at least two significant concentration-dilution periods.

Analysis of China’s PM_(2.5)and ozone coordinated control strategy based on the observation data from 2015 to 2020

The coordinated control of PM_(2.5)and ozone has become the strategic goal of national air pollution *** the gradual decline in PM_(2.5)concentration and the aggravation of ozone pollution,a better understanding of the coordinated control of PM_(2.5)and ozone is urgently ***,we collected and sorted air pollutant data for 337 cities from 2015 to 2020 to explore the characteristics of PM_(2.5)and ozone pollution based on China’s five major air pollution *** results show that it is necessary to continue to strengthen the emission reduction in PM_(2.5)and ozone precursors,and control NO_(x) and VOCs while promoting a dramatic emission reduction in PM_(2.5).The primary method of curbing ozone pollution is to strengthen the emission control of VOCs,with a long-term strategy of achieving substantial emission reductions in NO_(x),because VOCs and NO_(x) are also precursors to PM_(2.5);hence,their reductions also contribute to the reduction in PM_(2.5).Therefore,the implementation of a multipollutant emission reduction control strategy aimed at the prevention and control of PM_(2.5)and ozone pollution is the only means to realize the coordinated control of PM_(2.5)and ozone.

Rare earth inorganic-organic hybrid compounds based on Keggin-type polyoxometalate {SiW_(12)} with fast-responsive photochromism and switchable luminescence properties

Four rare earth inorganic-organic hybrid compounds based on Keggin-type polyoxometalate {SiW_(12)}with general formula [{RE(DMF)_(4)(H_(2)O)_4RE(DMF)_(6)}_(2){SiW_(12)O_(40)}_(3)](RE = La(1),Pr(2),Sm(3),Eu(4),DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide) were synthesized by the conventional solution *** analyses indicate that four compounds are isostructural and are all built from three [SiW_(12)O_(40)]^(4-) polyoxoanions and DMF ligands linked by RE^(3+).Compounds 1-4 are extremely sensitive to UV light and present excellent photochromic properties,in which the coloring and fading time of samples are both no more than 2 min,and the reversible coloring-fading process can be repeated for at least 10 cycles with little fatigue,suggesting that compounds 1-4 can be a series of fast-responsive and durable photochromic ***,the solid-state photoluminescence spectra of compounds 3(Sm) and 4(Eu)display strong characteristic emissions of rare earth ions based on f-f ***,compound4(Eu) has a longer fluorescence lifetime up to 566.74 μ***,co mpounds 3(Sm) and 4(Eu) exhibit the switchable luminescence behavior induced by photochromism,which allows them to be used as potential molecular switches.

The Contribution of United States Aircraft Reconnaissance Data to the China Meteorological Administration Tropical Cyclone Intensity Data:An Evaluation of Homogeneity

This paper investigates the homogeneity of United States aircraft reconnaissance data and the impact of these data on the homogeneity of the tropical cyclone(TC)best track data for the seasons 1949-1987 generated by the China Meteorological Administration(CMA).The evaluation of the reconnaissance data shows that the minimum central sea level pressure(MCP)data are relatively homogeneous,whereas the maximum sustained wind(MSW)data show both overestimations and spurious abrupt *** comparisons suggest that both the reconnaissance MCP and MSW were well incorporated into the CMA TC best track *** no spurious abrupt changes were evident in the reconnaissance-related best track MCP data,two spurious changepoints were identified in the remainder of the best-track MCP ***,the influence of the reconnaissance MSWs seems to extend to the best track MSWs unrelated to reconnaissance,which might reflect the optimistic confidence in making higher estimates due to the overestimated extreme wind“observations”.In addition,the overestimation of either the reconnaissance MSWs or the best track MSWs was greater during the early decades compared to later decades,which reflects the important influence of reconnaissance data on the CMA TC best track *** wind-pressure relationship(WPR)used in the CMA TC best track dataset is also evaluated and is found to overestimate the MSW,which may lead to inhomogeneity within the dataset between the aircraft reconnaissance era and the satellite era.
