Microphysical Insights into a Tornadic Supercell from Dual-Polarization Radar Observations in Jiangsu, China on 14 May 2021

Tornadoes are incredibly powerful and destructive natural events,yet the microphysical characteristics of the parent storm and its effects on tornadogenesis remain unclear.This study analyzed polarization radar data of a tornadic supercell that occurred in Jiangsu Province of China on 14 May 2021,in comparison with another tornadic supercell and two non-tornadic supercells that occurred in the same region in 2023.The two tornadic supercells exhibited lower differential reflectivity(ZDR)in the hook echo region compared with the non-tornadic supercells,indicating smaller median drop sizes.A distinct increase in ZDR from the melting of frozen hydrometeors,observed between2.5-and 4.0-km altitude in the non-tornadic storms,was absent in the tornadic cases.The non-tornadic supercells also displayed substantially higher specific differential phase(KDP)below the melting level,likely aroused from enhanced melting and cooling.These findings suggest fundamental microphysical contrasts between tornadic and nontornadic supercells.Specifically,tornadic supercells have smaller droplets and may reduce melting in hook echoes.Moreover,greater separation between the ZDR arc and the KDP foot was observed during tornadogenesis.The vertical gradient of KDP related to the cooling pool strength of the hook echo,regulating rear-flank downdraft thermodynamics.Despite the limited number of cases investigated,the findings of this study indicate that monitoring ZDR,KDP,and drop size distribution trends could assist with tornado prediction and warnings.

Association of complement components with risk of colorectal cancer:A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Complement components could contribute to the tumor microenvironment and the systemic immune response.Nevertheless,their role in colorectal cancer(CRC)remains a contentious subject.AIM To elucidate the relationship between complement components and CRC risk and clinical characteristics.METHODS Searches were conducted in PubMed,the Cochrane Library,and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database until June 1,2023.We included cohort studies encompassing participants aged≥18 years,investigating the association between complement components and CRC.The studies were of moderate quality or above,as determined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.The meta-analysis employed fixed-effects or random-effects models based on the I^(2)test,utilizing risk ratio(RR)and their corresponding 95%confidence interval(CI)for outcomes.Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to validate the robustness of the collective estimates and identify the source of heterogeneity.RESULTS Data from 15 studies,comprising 1631 participants that met the inclusion criteria,were included in the meta-analysis.Our findings indicated that protein levels of cluster of differentiation 46(CD46)(RR=3.66,95%CI:1.75-7.64,PluSION Our analysis underscores that increased levels of specific complement components are associated with a heightened risk of CRC,emphasi

A projected Newton algorithm based on chemically allowed interval for chemical equilibrium computations

The chemical equilibrium equations utilized in reactive transport modeling are complex and nonlinear,and are typically solved using the Newton-Raphson method.Although this algorithm is known for its quadratic convergence near the solution,it is less effective far from the solution,especially for ill-conditioned problems.In such cases,the algorithm may fail to converge or require excessive iterations.To address these limitations,a projected Newton method is introduced to incorporate the concept of projection.This method constrains the Newton step by utilizing a chemically allowed interval that generates feasible descending iterations.Moreover,we utilize the positive continuous fraction method as a preconditioning technique,providing reliable initial values for solving the algorithms.The numerical results are compared with those derived using the regular Newton-Raphson method,the Newton-Raphson method based on chemically allowed interval updating rules,and the bounded variable least squares method in six different test cases.The numerical results highlight the robustness and efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

AGK2 pre-treatment protects against thioacetamide-induced acute liver failure via regulating the MFN2-PERK axis and ferroptosis signaling pathway

Background:Acute liver failure(ALF)is an unpredictable and life-threatening critical illness.The pathological characteristic of ALF is massive necrosis of hepatocytes and lots of inflammatory cells infiltration which may lead to multiple organ failure.Methods:Animals were divided into 3 groups,normal,thioacetamide(TAA,ALF model)and TAA+AGK2.Cultured L02 cells were divided into 5 groups,normal,TAA,TAA+mitofusin 2(MFN2)-siRNA,TAA+AGK2,and TAA+AGK2+MFN2-siRNA groups.The liver histology was evaluated with hematoxylin and eosin staining,inositol-requiring enzyme 1(IRE1),activating transcription factor 6β(ATF6β),protein kinase R(PKR)-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase(PERK)and phosphorylated-PERK(p-PERK).C/EBP homologous protein(CHOP),reactive oxygen species(ROS),MFN2 and glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4)were measured with Western blotting,and cell viability and liver chemistry were also measured.Mitochondriaassociated endoplasmic reticulum membranes(MAMs)were measured by immunofluorescence.Results:The liver tissue in the ALF group had massive inflammatory cell infiltration and hepatocytes necrosis,which were reduced by AGK2 pre-treatment.In comparison to the normal group,apoptosis rate and levels of IRE1,ATF6β,p-PERK,CHOP,ROS and Fe2+in the TAA-induced ALF model group were significantly increased,which were decreased by AGK2 pre-treatment.The levels of MFN2 and GPX4 were decreased in TAA-induced mice compared with the normal group,which were enhanced by AGK2 pretreatment.Compared with the TAA-induced L02 cell,apoptosis rate and levels of IRE1,ATF6β,p-PERK,CHOP,ROS and Fe2+were further increased and levels of MFN2 and GPX4 were decreased in the MFN2-siRNA group.AGK2 pre-treatment decreased the apoptosis rate and levels of IRE1,ATF6β,p-PERK,CHOP,ROS and Fe2+and enhanced the protein expression of MFN2 and GPX4 in MFN2-siRNA treated L02 cell.Immunofluorescence observation showed that level of MAMs was promoted in the AGK2 pre-treatment group when compared with the TAA-induced group in both mice and L02 cells.Conclusions:The d

Configuration Synthesis and Grasping Performance Analysis of Multi-Loop Coupling Capture Mechanism for Launch and Recovery of Torpedo-Shaped Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Research of capture mechanisms with strong capture adaptability and stable grasp is important to solve the problem of launch and recovery of torpedo-shaped autonomous underwater vehicles(AUVs).A multi-loop coupling capture mechanism with strong adaptability and high retraction rate has been proposed for the launch and recovery of torpedo-shaped AUVs with different morphological features.Firstly,the principle of capturing motion retraction is described based on the appearance characteristics of torpedo-shaped AUVs,and the configuration synthesis of the capture mechanism is carried out using the method of constrained chain synthesis.Secondly,the screw theory is employed to analyze the degree of freedom(DoF)of the capture mechanism.Then,the 3D model of the capture mechanism is established,and the kinematics and dynamics simulations are carried out.Combined with the capture orientation requirements of the capture mechanism,the statics and vibration characteristics analyses are carried out.Furthermore,considering the capture process and the underwater working environment,the motion characteristics and hydraulics characteristics of the capture mechanism are analyzed.Finally,a principle prototype is developed and the torpedo-shaped AUVs capture experiment is completed.The work provides technical reserves for the research and development of AUV capture special equipment.

The unabated carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emission into the atmosphere has exacerbated global climate change,resulting in extreme weather events,biodiversity loss,and an intensified greenhouse effect.To address these challenges and work toward carbon(C)neutrality and reduced CO_(2)emissions,the capture and utilization of CO_(2)have become imperative in both scientific research and industry.One cutting-edge approach to achieving efficient catalytic performance involves integrating green bioconversion and chemical conversion.This innovative strategy offers several advantages,including environmental friendliness,high efficiency,and multi-selectivity.This study provides a comprehensive review of existing technical routes for carbon sequestration(CS)and introduces two novel CS pathways:the electrochemicalbiological hybrid and artificial photosynthesis systems.It also thoroughly examines the synthesis of valuable Cnproducts from the two CS systems employing different catalysts and biocatalysts.As both systems heavily rely on electron transfer,direct and mediated electron transfer has been discussed and summarized in detail.Additionally,this study explores the conditions suitable for different catalysts and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of biocatalysts.We also explored the biocompatibility of the electrode materials and developed novel materials.These materials were specifically engineered to combine with enzymes or microbial cells to solve the biocompatibility problem,while improving the electron transfer efficiency of both.Furthermore,this review summarizes the relevant systems developed in recent years for manufacturing different products,along with their respective production efficiencies,providing a solid database for development in this direction.The novel chemical-biological combination proposed herein holds great promise for the future conversion of CO_(2)into advanced organic compounds.Additionally,it offers exciting prospects for utilizing CO_(2)in synthesizing a wide range of industrial products.Ultimately,t

Comprehensive Summary A disulfide-based poly(ether-b-amide)copolymer with rapid self-healing capability under moderate conditions was synthesized from 4,4’-dithiodibutyric acid(DTDBA),isophorondiamine(IPDA)and poly(tetramethylene oxide)(PTMO)based on a two-step method.The incorporation of IPDA with asymmetric structure and substantial steric hindrance not only effectively decreased the number of regular H-bonds,but also inhibited the crystallization of polyamide segments,imparting the synthesized poly(ether-b-amide)copolymer with an amorphous structural feature.Based on the coordination of segmental diffusion and recombination of disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds,the scratches and damaged mechanical properties of PEBADS-I611 could be completely self-healed after healing at 40°C for only 11 min and 3 h,respectively.

All‑Covalent Organic Framework Nanofilms Assembled Lithium‑Ion Capacitor to Solve the Imbalanced Charge Storage Kinetics

Free-standing covalent organic framework(COFs)nanofilms exhibit a remarkable ability to rapidly intercalate/de-intercalate Li^(+) in lithium-ion batteries,while simultaneously exposing affluent active sites in supercapacitors.The development of these nanofilms offers a promising solution to address the persistent challenge of imbalanced charge storage kinetics between battery-type anode and capacitor-type cathode in lithium-ion capacitors(LICs).Herein,for the first time,custom-made COFBTMB-TP and COFTAPB-BPY nanofilms are synthesized as the anode and cathode,respectively,for an all-COF nanofilm-structured LIC.The COFBTMB-TP nanofilm with strong electronegative–CF3 groups enables tuning the partial electron cloud density for Li^(+) migration to ensure the rapid anode kinetic process.The thickness-regulated cathodic COFTAPB-BPY nanofilm can fit the anodic COF nanofilm in the capacity.Due to the aligned 1D channel,2D aromatic skeleton and accessible active sites of COF nanofilms,the whole COFTAPB-BPY//COFBTMB-TP LIC demonstrates a high energy density of 318 mWh cm^(−3) at a high-power density of 6 W cm^(−3),excellent rate capability,good cycle stability with the capacity retention rate of 77%after 5000-cycle.The COFTAPB-BPY//COFBTMB-TP LIC represents a new benchmark for currently reported film-type LICs and even film-type supercapacitors.After being comprehensively explored via ex situ XPS,7Li solid-state NMR analyses,and DFT calculation,it is found that the COFBTMB-TP nanofilm facilitates the reversible conversion of semi-ionic to ionic C–F bonds during lithium storage.COFBTMB-TP exhibits a strong interaction with Li^(+) due to the C–F,C=O,and C–N bonds,facilitating Li^(+) desolation and absorption from the electrolyte.This work addresses the challenge of imbalanced charge storage kinetics and capacity between the anode and cathode and also pave the way for future miniaturized and wearable LIC devices.

Continuous-wave operation of 1550 nm low-threshold triple-lattice photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers

Benefitting from narrow beam divergence,photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers are expected to play an essential role in the ever-growing fields of optical communication and light detection and ranging.Lasers operating with 1.55μm wavelengths have attracted particular attention due to their minimum fiber loss and high eye-safe threshold.However,high interband absorption significantly decreases their performance at this 1.55μm wavelength.Therefore,stronger optical feedback is needed to reduce their threshold and thus improve the output power.Toward this goal,photonic-crystal resonators with deep holes and high dielectric contrast are often used.Nevertheless,the relevant techniques for high-contrast photonic crystals inevitably complicate fabrication and reduce the final yield.In this paper,we demonstrate the first continuous-wave operation of 1.55μm photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers by using a‘triple-lattice photonic-crystal resonator’,which superimposes three lattice point groups to increase the strength of in-plane optical feedback.Using this geometry,the in-plane 180°coupling can be enhanced threefold compared to the normal single-lattice structure.Detailed theoretical and experimental investigations demonstrate the much lower threshold current density of this structure compared to‘single-lattice’and‘double-lattice’photonic-crystal resonators,verifying our design principles.Our findings provide a new strategy for photonic crystal laser miniaturization,which is crucial for realizing their use in future high-speed applications.

Upadacitinib for refractory ulcerative colitis with primary nonresponse to infliximab and vedolizumab:A case report

BACKGROUND Many patients with ulcerative colitis(UC)do not respond well to,or tolerate conventional and biological therapies.There is currently no consensus on the treatment of refractory UC.Studies have demonstrated that the selective Janus kinase 1 inhibitor upadacitinib,a small-molecule drug,is effective and safe for treating UC.However,no studies have revealed that upadacitinib is effective in treating refractory UC with primary nonresponse to infliximab and vedolizumab.CASE SUMMARY We report the case of a 44-year-old male patient with a chief complaint of bloody diarrhoea with mucus and pus,in addition to dizziness.The patient had recurrent disease after receiving mesalazine,prednisone,azathioprine,infliximab and vedolizumab over four years.Based on the endoscopic findings and pathological biopsy,the patient was diagnosed with refractory UC.In particular,the patient showed primary nonresponse to infliximab and vedolizumab.Based on the patient’s history and recurrent disease,we decided to administer upadacitinib.During hospitalisation,the patient was received upadacitinib under our guidance.Eight weeks after the initiation of upadacitinib treatment,the patient’s symptoms and endoscopic findings improved significantly.No notable adverse reactions have been reported to date.CONCluSION Our case report suggests that upadacitinib may represent a valuable strategy for treating refractory UC with primary nonresponse.
