Mapping Air Quality Using Remote sensing Technology: A Case study of Nairobi County

Nairobi County experiences rapid industrialization and urbanization that contributes to the deteriorating state of air quality, posing a potential health risk to its growing population. Currently, in Nairobi County, most air quality monitoring stations use low-cost, inaccurate monitors prone to defects. The study’s objective was to map Nairobi County’s air quality using freely available remotely sensed imagery. The Air Pollution Index (API) formula was used to characterize the air quality from cloud-free Landsat satellite images i.e., Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, and Landsat 8 OLI from Google Earth Engine. The API values were computed based on vegetation indices namely NDVI, TVI, DVI, and the sWIR1 and NIR bands on the QGIs platform. Qualitative accuracy assessment was done using sample points drawn from residential, industrial, green spaces, and traffic hotspot categories, based on a passive-random sampling technique. In this study, Landsat 5 API imagery for 2010 provided a reliable representation of local conditions but indicated significant pollution in green spaces, with recorded values ranging from -143 to 334. The study found that Landsat 7 API imagery in 2002 showed expected results with the range of values being -55 to 287, while Landsat 8 indicated high pollution levels in Nairobi. The results emphasized the importance of air quality factors in API calibration and the unmatched spatial coverage of satellite observations over ground-based monitoring techniques. The study recommends the recalibration of the API formula for characteristic regions, exploring newer satellite sensors like those onboard Landsat 9 and sentinel 2, and involving key stakeholders in a discourse to develop a suitable Kenyan air quality index.

Background:Ocular surface disease in glaucoma patients is a significant ocular co-morbidity that can affect 40%to 59%of these patients *** current study was aimed at evaluating the potential clinical benefit of an intense pulsed light(IPL)-based treatment in glaucomatous patients with ocular surface disease due to prolonged hypotensive eyedrop *** our knowledge,this is the first series analyzing the therapeutic effect of this treatment option in this type of ***:This non-comparative prospective case series study enrolled a total of 30 glaucoma patients ranging in age from 57 to 94 years old and treated with hypotensive eyedrops for years with dry eye *** patients received four sessions of IPL treatment using the Optima IPL system(lumenis,Yokneam,Israel)adjusted to the official optimized lumenis *** in symptomatology,corneal staining,conjunctival hyperemia,non-invasive break-up time(NIBUT),tear osmolarity,tear meniscus height(TMH),meiboscore and meibomian gland expressibility was analyzed after ***:statistically significant reductions were observed after IPL treatment in the symptomatology scores measured with different questionnaires[ocular surface disease index(OsDI),standard patient evaluation of eye dryness(sPEED)and symptom assessment questionnaire in dry eye(sANDE)]as well as with the visual analogue scale(PsDI was−15.0±11.3.A significant reduction was found after treatment in the corneal staining score(Psignificant reduction was found in tear film meniscus height(P=0.012),as well as in tear film osmolarity(P=0.001).A significant reduction was also found in meibomian gland expressibility(P=0.003),changing the percentage of grade 3 eyes from 44.4%before IPL to 17.2%after ***:IPL therapy combined with meibomian gland expression(MGX)seems to be an effective option to improve symptomatology in glaucomatous patients with ocular surface diseas

The increasingly rapid development of the disciplines of petroleum engineering and petroleum geology has led to new methodologies and interpretation techniques forming new knowledge that should be offered quickly and efficiently to modern engineers and geologists. This need is equally important for students as well as for young professionals. Access and training to all scientific information is necessary to ensure success in their future careers. Today, e-learning has become a common medium for the management and distribution of on-line educational content. Learning Management systems （LMss） were not only developed to handle a large variety of multimedia content that provides an organized knowledge repository used to accelerate access to information and skill acquisition; but, LMss can also keep detailed statistics on the use of the available material offering a powerful training and educational tool. In this document, the Petroleum Knowledge Tutorial system, an LMs platform offering a variety of online educational and training options to petroleum engineers and geologists, is presented. It was created using Moodle, open- source software that can be used to create on-line courses. The platform covers fundamental educational concepts in a structured way. It follows an optimized ＂workflow＂ that can be applied not only to solve a specific exercise but also any similar problem encountered over the course of one＇s career. The platform was designed to offer a repository of learning material in various forms and to favor user-platform interactions. The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has profoundly impacted liver transplant(LT)activity across the world,with notable decreases in the number of donations and procedures in most Western countries,in particular throughout the first *** cumulative incidence of COVID-19 in LT recipients(with estimates ranging from 0.34%to 1.56%)appears to be at least comparable to that observed for the general *** and radiological features at presentation are also similar to non-transplant *** risk of death among LT recipients requiring hospital admission is high(from 12% to 19%),although some authors have suggested that overall mortality may be actually lower compared to the general non-transplant *** is likely that these poor outcomes may be mainly influenced by the older age and higher comorbidity burden of LT recipients,rather than by the transplant status *** fact,it has been hypothesized that post-transplant immunosuppression would exert a protective role,with special focus on tacrolimus-containing *** is scarce evidence to guide the optimal management of post-transplant COVID-19 and the use of antiviral or immunomodulatory therapies,although both clinical practice and guidelines support the dose reduction or withdrawal of anti-proliferative agents such as mofetil *** reports suggest that the antibody response to messenger RNA vaccines is significantly impaired as compared to non-immunocompromised individuals,in line with other transplant ***,it is foreseeable that the future will be conditioned by the emerging variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 with increased transmissibility among LT recipients.
