Biocompatibility and biotoxicity of in-situ synthesized carboxylated nanodiamond-cobalt oxide nanocomposite

A nanocomposite that incorporates cobalt oxide（co3O4） and nanodiamond（ND） can present both high magnetism（co3O4） and high hardness（ND）. ND particles have potential applications in a variety of fields such as protein immobilization, biosensors, therapeutic molecule delivery and bio-imaging. However,limited information is available in literature on the in-situ synthesis of biocompatible magnetic materials and also on their potential biotoxicity as a result of their entry into environmental compartments and subsequent interaction with biota. In this work, a new kind of bio-compatible magnetic material –carboxylated nanodiamond（c ND） and co3O4 was synthesized to obtain the c ND-co3O4 *** synthesis procedure involved in-situ and chemical reduction of cobalt chloride（cocl（26）H2O） and sodium borohydrate（NaBH4）. The synthesized cND-co3O4 nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The cyto-genotoxicity of the synthesized nanocomposite material was studied by using onion（Allium cepa L.） as a test model with concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 μg/ml. The study was also extended to cND and co3O4 materials for comparison purpose. co3O4 and cND exhibited their contrasting effects on mitosis and other cyto-genotoxic indices studied herein. This work provided fundamental data on the synthesis and the bio-toxicity of the c ND-co3O4 nanocomposite, which, in turn, can help to expand their multidisciplinary applications.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron collider,as standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAs collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAs *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

since 2014,"Bring Your Own Data"workshops(BYODs)have been organised to inform people about the process and benefits of making resources findable,Accessible,Interoperable,and Reusable(fAIR,and the fAIRification process).The BYOD workshops'content and format differ depending on their goal,context,and the background and needs of ***-focused BYODs educate domain experts on how to make their data fAIR to find new answers to research ***-focused BYODs promote the benefits of making data fAIR and instruct project managers and policy-makers on the characteristics of fAIRification ***-focused BYODs gather software developers and experts on fAIR to implement or improve software resources that are used to support ***,these BYODs intend to foster collaboration between different types of stakeholders involved in data management,curation,and reuse(*** experts,trainers,developers,data owners,data analysts,fAIR experts).The BYODs also serve as an opportunity to learn what kind of support for fAIRification is needed from different communities and to develop teaching materials based on practical examples and *** this paper,we detail the three different structures of the BYODs and describe examples of early BYODs related to plant breeding data,and rare disease registries and biobanks,which have shaped the structure of the *** discuss the latest insights into making BYODs more productive by leveraging our almost ten years of training experience in these workshops,including successes and encountered ***,we examine how the participants'feedback has motivated the research on fAIR,including the development of workflows and software.

Are extrafloral nectaries efficient against herbivores? Herbivory and plant defenses in contrasting tropical species

Aims Plants have limited resources for defenses and species that invest in biotic defenses might exhibit leaves that invest less in other types of *** have investigated whether plants that have few mechanical defenses,but have extrafloral nectaries(EfNs)patrolled by ants,are less prone to herbivory,compared with plants without EfNs that have tougher *** Data from the literature were extracted to examine the reported levels of herbivory in plants with or without *** a savanna vegetation in southern Brazil,field data were collected in leaves from six tropical species and herbivory and specific leaf area(sLA)levels were *** further evaluated differences in herbivory and sLA among species and between plants with or without *** order to test the relationship between herbivory and leaf toughness we regressed average herbivory and average sLA per *** findings Plants exhibited variable levels of leaf damage,but plants without ant defenses experienced the highest levels of leaf area loss to *** of mechanical defenses were also variable among the plant *** without EfNs were tougher,exhibiting lower values of *** plants without EfNs had more sclerophyllous leaves,this mechanical defense was not sufficient to impair and/or reduce herbivore feeding,suggesting that the biotic defenses performed by patrolling ants might be more effective than investment in mechanical defenses associated with leaf palatability.

BAcKGROUND Hepatitis c virus(HcV)infection is responsible for a chronic liver inflammation,which may cause end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular *** E(protein:ApoE,gene:APOE),a key player in cholesterol metabolism,is mainly synthesized in the liver and APOE polymorphisms may influence HcV-induced liver *** To determine whether APOE alleles affect outcomes in HcV-infected patients with liver cirrhosis following orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT).METHODs This was a cohort study in which 179 patients,both genders and aged 34-70 years,were included before or after(up to 10 years follow-up)*** injury severity was assessed using different criteria,including METAVIR and models for endstage liver *** polymorphisms were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain *** The APOE3 allele was the most common(67.3%).In inflammation severity of biopsies from 89 OLT explants and 2 patients in pre-transplant,the degree of severe inflammation(A3f4,0.0%)was significantly less frequent than in patients with minimal and moderate degree of inflammation(≤A2f4,16.2%)P=0.048,in patients carrying the APOE4 allele when compared to *** addition,a significant difference was also found(≤A2f4,64.4%vs A3f4,0.0%;P=0.043)and(A1f4,57.4%vs A3f4,0.0%;P=0.024)in APOE4 patients when compared to APOE3 *** fibrosis degree of the liver graft in 8 of 91 patients and the lack of the E4 allele was associated with more moderate fibrosis(f2)(P=0.006).cONclusION Our results suggest that the E4 allele protects against progression of liver fibrosis and degree of inflammation in HcV-infected patients.

Effect of pre-and post-wildfire management practices on plant recovery after a wildfire in Northeast Iberian Peninsula

fire and pre-or post-fire management practices shape the distribution and richness of plant ***,the effects of pre-and post-fire management on vegetation recovery were studied at different times,up to 18 months after a *** months after a 2015 wildfire,18 study plots were established(three 4-m^2 plots for each treatment),vegetation regrowth was monitored and vegetal species richness(s),evenness(IT),density(D),diversity(H0)and maximum diversity(HMax)after 2,10 and 18 *** treatments were(1)control,unaffected by 2015 wildfire;(2)no treatment(NT),burned in 2015 wildfire and not managed;(3)managed in 2005 and burned in 2015(M05B);(4)managed in 2015,2 months before wildfire(M15B);(5)cut and manual removal after the 2015 wildfire(cR);(6)cut and no trunk removal randomly deposited on topsoil after the 2015 wildfire(cL).All the treatments were carried out in a Pinus halepensis Miller *** 10 and 18 months after the wildfire,vegetation recovery was greater in NT,cR and cL plots than in M05B and M15B the *** 18 months after the wildfire,Brachypodium retusum(Pers.)*** Rosmarinus officinalis *** still dominant,especially in M15B,corroborating the belief that pre-fire treatment reduced ecosystem resilience and vegetal recovery compared to the NT and post-fire managed *** was significantly lower 10 months after wildfire in control plots,and IT was significantly higher in that inventory than previously in *** months after the wildfire,H0 was significantly lower in *** months post-wildfire,HMax was significantly lower in the control *** months after the wildfire,HMax,was significantly higher in cR,cL and M05B than in the control and M15B ***,pre-fire management was detrimental to post-fire vegetation recovery,while manual post-fire management proved beneficial.

studies of post-fire soil status in Mediterranean ecosystems are common;however,few have examined the effects of long-term forest management after a wildfire on physicochemical soil ***,we analyzed differences in soil properties attributable to long-term postfire management and assessed the sustainability of these management practices in relation to the soil *** study area is located in Odena in the northeast region of the Iberian Peninsula consisted of the control forest(burned more than 30 years ago),low density forest(LD;burned in a wildfire in 1986 and managed in 2005)and high density forest(HD;burned in a wildfire in 1986 and no managed).for soils from each plot,we measured soil water repellency,aggregate stability,total nitrogen(TN),soil organic matter(sOM),inorganic carbon(Ic),pH,electrical conductivity,extractable calcium,magnesium,sodium,potassium(K),phosphorus,aluminum(Al),manganese(Mn),iron(fe),zinc,copper,boron,chrome,silicon and sulfur and calculated the ratios of c/N,ca+Mg/(Na+K)^1/2,ca/Al and ca/*** differences were found in TN,Ic,sOM,pH,K,Al,Mn,fe and c/N ratio(psoil properties were found to have largely recovered their pre-fire *** were affected by the post-fire management practices implemented 20 years after the fire,as reflected in their respective physicochemical properties,so that soil properties at the control and LD sites are more similar today than those at the control and HD ***,sustainable forest management can overcome soil degradation in areas affected by wildfire in the medium-and long-term by improving soil properties.

The effect of fatigue and duration knowledge of exercise on kicking performance in soccer players

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of fatigue upon kicking maximal ball velocity and the target-hitting accuracy of soccer players;and also to examine the effect of the knowledge of the exercise duration upon these 2 ***:Twenty-four semi-professional soccer players participated in this study and performed maximal instep kicks before and after the implementation of an exercise protocol,either with or without knowledge of the duration of this ***:A mixed model of analysis of variance showed that kicking maximal ball velocity was significantly affected(f(5,85)=11.6,pfter just 1 circuit of the fatigue protocol and then remained *** did not change during the protocol(f(5,75)=0.23,p=0.76,η^2=0.03) and knowing the duration of exercitation did not affect accuracy and velocity development(f(1,23) ≤1.04,p≥0.32,η~2≤0.06).conclusion:These findings demonstrated the potential negative effects of fatigue on kicking ball velocity in soccer but not in the kicking accuracy and that the effect of fatigue may not be progressive over *** or not knowing the duration of exercitation did not affect the results.

fluorescent Proteins(fP)can be applied as biomarkers and biosensors in the industrial and medical fields,but their large-scale use,especially for new industrial applications,is limited due to their low ***,the discovery of additives capable of preserving the activity of fP at room temperature and under stress conditions can help to expand and facilitate their commercial *** this goal,we evaluated the application of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride-based([c_(n)mim]cl)ionic liquids(ILs)as additives to preserve the activity of Enhanced Green fluorescent Protein(EGfP)at different storage times and under unfavorable ***[c_(n)mim]cl solutions(at 0.100 mol L^(-1))were able to preserve EGfP fluorescence for longer than the phosphatesaline buffer(PBs)and Nacl solutions,increasing its fluorescence manifestation from 1 to 3 months.[c_(n)mim]cl with shorter to medium cationic alkyl chains were the most effective in preserving EGfP fluorescence.[c_(n)mim]cl also protected EGfP activity in the presence of the surfactant sDs,the acid guanidine hydrochloride,and H_(2)O_(2).Therefore,[c_(n)mim]cl can be added to aqueous solutions to preserve EGfP fluorescence activity at room temperature for longer storage times and to reduce the negative impact of denaturing agents on ***,there is a massive potential for the application of ILs as additives to preserve fP in the long-term without refrigeration and under unfavorable conditions,and this is fundamental to enable expansion of fP in industrial and commercial applications.
