Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oil from Hyptis carpinifolia Benth

Essential oils are secondary metabolites whose biological properties have been studied with emphasis on antimicrobial activity. Hyptis carpinifolia Benth (Rosmaninho) is used in folk medicine in the fight against colds and rheumatism. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from H. carpinifolia. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation using a modified Clevenger apparatus. The biological activity was determined using the Agar Cavity Diffusion technique to evaluate the effect of concentrations of 500, 250, 125, 62.5, 31.25, 15.62, 7.81 and 3.9 μg·mL-1 on the bacteria Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, salmonella Choleraesuis, staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The fungicidal potential was evaluated by the method of dilution in agar, and the percentage inhibition of mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum was evaluated. The dilutions tested were 1000, 750, 500, 250 and 100 μL·L-1. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the essential oil for L. monocytogenes, s. aureus and E. coli were 31.25;15.62 and 62.5 μg·mL-1, respectively. The MIC was 500 μg·mL-1 for salmonella Choleraesuis and P. aeruginosa. The percentage inhibitions of mycelial growth of B. cinerea and A. alternate were 67% and 33%, respectively, at the dilution of 750 μL·L-1. The essential oil inhibited about 48% of the mycelial growth of F. oxysporum, at the dilution of 1000 μL·L-1. The essential oil of H. carpinifolia presented biological activity against all the microorganisms evaluated.

The “cachaça” is currently one of the fastest growing agro-industrial industries in the country as the drink considered as a symbol of Brazilian nationality. This study aimed to quantify the phenolic compounds, evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of different samples of aged “cachaça”. The physic-chemical analysis was performed at the Brandy Quality Laboratory of the Federal University of Lavras, and the determination of phenolic compounds was performed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The antimicrobial activity evaluation was held at the Food Mycology Laboratory through the cavity agar diffusion technique and by steam using the micro-organisms Escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, salmonella choleraesuis, Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH radical sequestering method. The values obtained for the phenolic compounds ranged from 0.41 to 9.69 mg/L, observing the predominance of syringaldehyde, gallic acid and vanillic acid. The phenolic extracts showed a satisfactory antibacterial activity for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive but did not show inhibition against the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antioxidant activity was evidenced by the DPPH test for cachaças tested and the “cachaça” aged in oak barrel showed the highest activity, followed by “cachaça” aged in jequitibá, amburana and balm barrels.

The essential oils from Mentha viridis L. and Mentha pulegium L. were characterized by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-Ms). These oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and presented linalool (40.70%), carvone (13.52%) and α-terpinene (8.56%) as the principal constituents in the essential oil from Mentha viridis L. Pulegone (50.01%), menthol (31.90%) and menthone (16.56%) were the principal constituents in the essential oil from Mentha pulegium L. These essential oils (in concentrations ranging from 3.91 to 500 μL·mL-1) showed satisfactory activities against Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, salmonella choleraesuis and staphylococcus aureus. The antioxidant activities with 2-deoxyribose and phosphomolybdenum and the reducing power (in concentrations ranging from 0.78 to 1000 μL·mL-1) were determined. The antioxidant activity was observed for the two oils evaluated by the phosphomolybdenum and 2-deoxyribose methods, whereas the essential oil from M. viridis presented low antioxidant activity in the reducing power assay.

Essential oils from Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon citratus, Rosmarinus officinalis, Peumus boldus and Foeniculum vulgare were extracted by hydrodistillation, chemically characterized and quantified by GC/Ms and GC/FID. The principal componentes in the essential oil of M. piperita (carvone and limonene), C. citratus (geranial, neral and myrcene), R. officinalis (1,8-cineole, camphor and α-pinene), P. boldus (α-terpinyl formate, p-cymene and 1,8-cineole) and F. vulgare (methyl chavicol, limonene and fenchone) were identified. The oils were tested for antioxidant activity employing the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl) radical-capture method, the oxidation of the β-carotene/linoleic acid system, and the ABTs radical-capture method. The essential oils were not effective. The antioxidant activities of the oils were determined by the hydroxyl method, and the highest activity (62.80%) was observed with the essential oil from M. piperita. Activities of 1.54 and 1.82 μg μg-1, respectively, were observed for the essential oils from C. citratus and P. Boldus using the phosphomolybdenum method. No activity was observed with respect to reducing power. The essential oil from C. citratus was effective in inhibiting the growth of L. monocytogenes (15.63 mg·L-1), s. choleraesuis (15.63 mg·L-1) and E. coli (31.25 mg·L-1), and the essential oil from P. boldus inhibited the growth of s. aureus (62.5 mg·L-1). No essential oil inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa. A low antioxidant activity and a promising antibacterial activity were observed for these essential oils.

The Use of Triancinolone for the Treatment of Keloid scars

scars, when in good evolution, result in a smooth, thin and discreet tissue. Keloid scars, however, are a type of abnormal and exacerbated repair response to tissue injury, whether in surgical interventions or in various injuries, which present in a prominent and gross way. In this context, there is an excess of collagen deposition in the tissue repair process, which can lead to the formation of keloids. The diagnosis of the condition presented is made by the medical professional or by the patient himself after the surgical intervention or skin injury. Under this analysis, protruding, rough and bad-looking scars are identified. In addition, we highlight the existence of keloids similar to large tumors, described as Jorge Lobo disease. The treatment encompasses massages, compressions, corticosteroids, chemotherapy, collagenase and cryotherapy. At first, we used corticosteroid-based massages, and then we started using compressive dressings until we started intrakeloid infiltrations with injectable triamcinolone. Triamcinolone 10 mg injectable—1/10—in 0.9% saline, with syringe and fixed needle 0.3 mm × 8 mm, intralesional infiltrate, in this context, proved to be effective for its treatment when applied sequentially and linearly. In cases where the medication was applied, there was an improvement after 21 days of application and a definitive improvement 2 months after the injury. In comparison, on the other hand, patients who were not subjected to the application of the medication may improve after 4 months of the injury or worsen compared to the initial case. We have come to the conclusion that this procedure may be one of the chosen ones for the treatment of keloid scars, being one of the most recommended for cases of keloid already installed.

Esophageal and gastric cancer(GC) are related to obesity and bariatric surgery. Risk factors, such as gastroesophageal reflux and Helicobacter pylori, must be investigated and treated in obese population. After surgery, GC reports are anecdotal and treatment is not standardized. This review aims to discuss GC related to obesity before and after bariatric surgery.

Iron-Deficiency Anemia Management in Gynecological surgery: A Review of Current Evidence and Best Practices

Purpose: Due to the high prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in women undergoing gynecological surgeries and its association with worse postoperative results, it is necessary to identify and treat anemia preoperatively. However, although anemia and iron deficiency are significant global health problems, there are still disparities in the recognition and implementation of “Patient Blood Management” (PBM) as a comprehensive approach to mitigating the risks associated with these diseases. The purpose of the study is to review best practices for the treatment of anemia based on the Enhanced Recovery After surgery (ERAs) protocol and PBM recommendations. Methods: This study reviewed the literature on preoperative iron deficiency anemia in patients undergoing gynecological surgery. We identified references through searches in PubMed using relevant search terms. Results: Among the various strategies used in PBM, perhaps the most important is the early detection and management of anemia. In gynecological surgery, there are several approaches to reducing perioperative blood loss, highlighting the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists (aGnRh) and antifibrinolytics. Oral and intravenous iron supplementation can be performed in addition to blood transfusion to treat anemia. Conclusion: Addressing preoperative and postoperative anemia through systematic correction, following the guidelines of the ERAs protocol and PBM guidelines, is essential to improving perioperative outcomes in women undergoing gynecological surgery.

Hematopoietic tumors are associated with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and a poor prognosis. Furthermore, their pathophysiology in dogs is not well understood. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia has been rarely reported in golden retrievers, perhaps due to difficulties in diagnosis and care. An 8-year-old spayed female golden retriever was referred to our hospital with a 2-month history of fatigue, weakness, and selective appetite. The dog was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia based on blood smear evaluation. Despite treatment, the dog deteriorated and the owners opted for euthanasia. Histopathological examination revealed atypical lymphocytes in the spleen, extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen and liver, bone marrow depletion, moderate neutrophilic myocarditis, and acute renal tubular necrosis. In an immunohistochemical panel, cells in the spleen and bone marrow were positive for anti-CD20, anti-CD45, anti-CD3, anti-IBA-1, anti-Ki67, anti-MUM-1, and anti-PAX-5. In conclusion, the leukemia diagnosis was confirmed through reactive histiocytosis, marked extramedullary hematopoiesis, and other clinical and laboratory findings. Herein, we report a case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia in a female dog with clinical, laboratory, and necroscopy findings.

Optimal velocity functions for car-following models

The integral part of the optimal velocity car-following models is the optimal velocity function (OVF), which can be derived from measured velocity-spacing data. This paper discusses several characteristics of the OVF and presents regression analysis on two classical datasets, the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, with different possible OVFs. The numerical simulation of the formation of traffic congestion is conducted with three different heuristic OVFs, demonstrating that these functions give results similar to those of the famous Bando OVF (Bando et al., 1995). Also an alternative method is present for determining the sensitivity and model parameters based on a single car driving to a fixed barrier.
