Dispersion of the Bacterium Xylella fastidiosa in Portugal

After the first detection of the gram-negative bacterium,Xylella fastidiosa multiplex in Portugal,in January 2019,a“Demarcated Area”was delimited and an“Action Plan”to control the pathogen has been *** is considered one of the greatest threats to plant health worldwide and leads to loss of forests vitality and *** current study was developed till June 2020,with the objective to understand the dimension of the issue worldwide and in Portugal,analyzing the state-of-the-art on the biology,dispersion,symptoms,control and risks associated with this bacterium(Research Phase).In the Prospecting Phase,we collected 5 branches with 5-8 leaves,from the four quadrants of the tree,wrapping and labeling them-so 2,261 samples were collected and sent to the laboratory for *** was possible to determine that the two initial outbreaks were not an isolated case,as 107 additional outbreaks were detected in other places,revealing a much more worrying panorama,requiring further analysis on the real impact of this bacterial strain on the natural *** the end of this study the demarcated area covered about 62,000 *** most affected species was lavender with 30%of positive outbreaks,followed by gorse with 22%,and rosemary with 11%.spread of Phillaenus spumarius and *** indicates that insect vector and transport links appear to be dispersal facilitators together with Douro *** eradication is unfeasible to achieve in the coming years,containment will be the most appropriate strategy.

Cardiovascular diseases represent the world’s leading cause of death. In thisheterogeneous group of diseases, ischemic cardiomyopathies are the mostdevastating and prevalent, estimated to cause 17.9 million deaths per *** all biomedical efforts, there are no effective treatments that can replacethe myocytes lost during an ischemic event or progression of the disease to heartfailure. In this context, cell therapy is an emerging therapeutic alternative to treatcardiovascular diseases by cell administration, aimed at cardiac regeneration andrepair. In this review, we will cover more than 30 years of cell therapy in cardiology,presenting the main milestones and drawbacks in the field and signalingfuture challenges and perspectives. The outcomes of cardiac cell therapies arediscussed in three distinct aspects: The search for remuscularization byreplacement of lost cells by exogenous adult cells, the endogenous stem cell era,which pursued the isolation of a progenitor with the ability to induce heart repair,and the utilization of pluripotent stem cells as a rich and reliable source ofcardiomyocytes. Acellular therapies using cell derivatives, such as microvesiclesand exosomes, are presented as a promising cell-free therapeutic alternative.

Digenean parasites of the marine gastropods Littorina littorea and Gibbula umbilicalis in the Northern Portuguese Atlantic coast,with a review of digeneans infecting the two gastropod genera

objective:To study the digenean parasites of the prosobranch gastropods,Littorina littorea(***)and Gibbula umbilicalis(***)from rocky shores of the Northern Atlantic coast of ***:A total of 413 *** and 2603 *** were collected from rocky shores,at Aveiro estuary,Aguda Beach,and Foz Beach at Porto(Northern Atlantic coast of Portugal)from January to July 2014 and February 2014 to January 2015,*** and digestive glands of the gastropods were examined under light microscopy for the presence of *** gonads of *** were prepared for histological observation,whereas digeneans found in *** were studied and identified with the aid of light and scanning electron ***:Two species of digeneans were found infecting the digestive gland and gonads of ***,namely,Cainocreadium labracis and Lecithochirium furcolabiatum with a combined prevalence of 3%.Histological observations of gonads of *** revealed the infection with digeneans,with considerable replacement of gonadal *** digeneans were not identified to species *** prevalence of digeneans in this snail host was 0.7%.Conclusions:The present study adds *** as another first intermediate host for Cainocreadium labracis and extends its geographical range to the Portuguese Atlantic *** of Lecithochirium furcolabiatum were previously reported from ***.A literature review of digeneans occurring in the gastropod genera Gibbula and Littorina is given.

Using meshes to change the characteristics of simulated rainfall produced by spray nozzles

Rainfall simulators have been used for many years contributing to the understanding of soil and water conservation ***,rainfall simulators’design and operation might be rather demanding for achieving specific rainfall intensity distributions and drop characteristics and are still open for *** study explores the potential of combining spray nozzle simulators with meshes to change rainfall characteristics,namely drop properties(drop diameters and fall speeds).A rainfall simulator laboratory set-up was prepared that enabled the incorporation of different wire meshes beneath the spray *** tests conducted in this exploratory work included different types of spray nozzles,mesh materials(plastic and steel),square apertures and wire thicknesses,and positions of the meshes in relation to the *** intensity and drop size distribution and fall speed were *** showed that the meshes combined with nozzles increased the mean rainfall intensity on the 1 m^(2) control plot below the nozzle and altered the rain drops’properties,by increasing the mass-weighted mean drop diameter,for example.

Enterococcus:review of its physiology,pathogenesis,diseases and the challenges it poses for clinical microbiology

The genus Enterococcus is composed of 38 species,the most important of which are Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium-both human intestinal *** within the United states and around the world commonly isolate these bacteria because they are a cause of bacteremia,urinary tract infections(UTIs),endocarditis,wound infections,meningitis,intraabdominal and pelvic infections,and nosocomial and iatrogenic *** the ubiquity of enterococci within the human population,it is important for laboratories to be able to distinguish these agents within hospitalized patients from other bacterial genera and also differentiate different species within the Enterococcus genus as well as different strains within each ***,the enterococci are emerging as serious pathogens in both the developed world,where surveillance needs to be improved and speciation procedures are inadequate or cumbersome,and in developing nations,which lack the trained hospital personnel or funding to sufficiently identify enterococci to the genus or species *** review explores the Enterococcus genus and highlights some of the concerns for national and international clinical microbiology laboratories.

Different light wavelengths have specific effects on plant growth and ***-bandwidth light-emitting diode(LED)lighting may be used to directionally manipulate size,color and metabolites in high-value fruits and *** this report,Red Russian kale(Brassica napus)seedlings were grown under specific light conditions and analyzed for photomorphogenic responses,pigment accumulation and nutraceutical *** results showed that this genotype responds predictably to darkness,blue and red light,with suppression of hypocotyl elongation,development of pigments and changes in specific ***,these seedlings were relatively hypersensitive to far-red light,leading to uncharacteristically short hypocotyls and high pigment accumulation,even after growth under very low fluence rates(,1 mmol m^(-2) s^(-1)).General antioxidant levels and aliphatic glucosinolates are elevated by far-red light *** treatments of darkness,blue light,red light and far-red light were applied throughout sprout development to alter final product *** results indicate that sequential treatment with narrow-bandwidth light may be used to affect key economically important traits in high-value crops.
