fOUNDATIONS—THE BASE Of SUSTAINABLE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING DESIGN

INTRODUCTION The foundation is perhaps a building’s most challenging envelope component from energy transport and hygrothermal *** such,the foundation literally provides the energy and materials basis on which the sustainability of the entire structure depends from a number of *** foundation can account for as much as 40%of the building envelope conduction loss and,more importantly,in unoccupied conditions,almost all of the latent load(or energy required for dehumidification).from a materials perspective,the foundation has to provide a durable interface between the surrounding ground and the building interior in the presence of bulk water,soil gasses(such as radon,water vapor,and even,on occasion,hydrogen sulphide),frost,biotic activity,and pest infestation while simultaneously being the building’s structural *** an energy perspective,the foundation must insulate the interior from the surrounding soil and ambient environment,and provide an interior surface temperature producing comfortable conditions for the occupants while minimizing both sensible and latent thermal loads to the greatest possible *** all these requirements in a cost-competitive residential housing market is ***,national residential building codes such as the International Residential Code(IRC)and the International Energy Conservation Code(IECC)do provide a least common denominator basis for building adequate foundations,but they do not go nearly far enough from a sustainability perspective,particularly in light of twenty-first century energy *** is reasonable to state that these codes are a generation or two behind what would be an appropriate building regulatory policy for the current times,namely,that residential buildings in particular should be built to a zero net energy standard(that is,no net energy importation across the property line for a given calendar year).The technology to accomplish this standard does exist and i

THE ENERGY SAVINGS POTENTIAL Of OPTIMIZED SLAB-ON-GRADE fOUNDATION INSUL .ATION RETROfITS

A recently developed 3-dimensional earth contact simulation program that operates as a subroutine of the EnergyPlus whole building energy simulation program was used to evaluate the energy performance and cost-effectiveness of retrofit slab-on-grade(SOG)foundation *** optimized retrofit insulation design utiliz-ing hydro-vacuum excavation was developed that generated 8.4%larger metered(or site)energy savings at a$428 lower cost than the IECC 2012 requirement in a Minneapolis,MN climate for a 400 ft2 test *** energy performance and cost effectiveness of single and multi-family buildings was assessed for climate Zones 4–*** reference to the Building America B10 benchmark,the highest site energy savings of 5%was realized for a single family home in Duluth,MN,and the lowest savings of 1.4%for a 4-unit townhouse in Richmond,*** foundation insulation retrofit simple paybacks ranged from 18 to 47 *** it is likely that larger energy savings of 10%or more with concomitantly reduced simple paybacks can only be realized in well-insulated buildings.

Sex-biased autophagy as a potential mechanism mediating sex differences in ischemic stroke outcome

Does Normobaric Hypoxic Resistance Training Confer Benefit over Normoxic Training in Athletes?A Narrative Review

Purpose The aim of the present review was to focus on normobaric hypoxic resistance training and to discuss to what extent this method can be efficient for athletes to potentiate classical adaptations to resistance training and thereby *** Search terms related to the topic of the present review such as normobar*,hypox*,resistance exercise,resistance training and performance were inserted in Pubmed and *** total,16 articles made the core of this narrative *** Based on the available literature,2-3 sessions a week performed in hypoxic conditions for 4-6 weeks with a f_(i)O_(2)of 0.14-0.15 should recommended to athletes looking at potentiating the effects of resistance training.A large range of loads has been found to be efficient at inducing physiological effects in hypoxic vs normoxic conditions,from 20%to 90%of the ***,at least the last set should be performed to failure,if not ***,inter-set rest periods should be around 30 s for low-load exercise(30%-40%1-RM),around 60 s for moderate-load exercise(60%-70%1-RM)and 2 min for high-load exercise(85%-90%1-RM).Conclusion While there is no one size fits all and certainly no guarantee of added value over normoxic training,each athlete looking at potentiating the effects of resistance training should try to implement some sessions in hypoxic *** on the individual response,subtle improvements may be expected on muscle strength and mass,velocity and power,as well as hormonal responses to resistance training.

Communicating Uncertainty in Climate Information for China: Recommendations and Lessons Learned for Climate Services

Uncertainty is an inherent characteristic of climate forecasts and projections. While there is an expanding body of international research on identifying what climate information users need to know about uncertainty, and how this should be communicated, very little of this has been conducted in a Chinese cultural context. In this paper, we report on the findings of interviews with climate experts(n = 28) and(potential) users of climate information in China(n =18) at seasonal and multidecadal timescales, with the objective of addressing the following research questions:(1)What information about uncertainty in climate forecasts and projections is currently provided to users in China?(2)What do climate experts believe that users need to know about uncertainty?(3) What information about uncertainty would(potential) users like to receive?(4) What challenges do providers and users perceive with respect to the communication of uncertainty? We find that while seasonal forecasts are predominantly presented deterministically, current and potential users are aware that there is uncertainty associated with them. Climate experts highlight the probabilistic nature of forecasts and the conditional nature of forecast quality, as areas for communication development. Interviews with(potential) users indicate that(1) preferences for deterministic information are not unanimous;(2) probabilities associated with conditions being above/below normal may only be considered useful for decision-making if they are > 60%;and(3) forecasts that provide tailored statements on probability of user-relevant thresholds are preferred. At multidecadal timescales, we observe lower engagement with projections, and less evidence of interaction between providers and recipients, suggesting that development of climate services at multidecadal timescales will need to first highlight the added value of these. AIM: To explore different effects of 12 beticolins, Cer-cospora beticola toxins, on ras-transformed adrenocorti-cal cell growth inhibition and their functional mechanism. METHODS: Beticolin-induced inhibition was measured with survival cell number determined by an automated photocolorimetric method. The penetration of beticolin was examined by confocal microscopy. Ras protein determined by Lowry method were separated by 14 % SDS-PAGE and electroblotted to Immobilon-P transfer membrane and detected with pan-Ras (Ab-3) monoclonal antibody. The Ca2+ chelation by beticolin was investigated using a calcium ionophore. RESULTS: Cell growth inhibition was found dose- and time-dependently at submicromolar level for beticolin-1, -2, and -13 (IC50 ≤250 nmol/L) and for beticolin-0, 6, and -11 (400 nmol/L ≤ IC50f cell culture step and not reversible for 3-day treatment. This study assessed the quality parameters and consumer perception and behavior of butter processed with different ratios of cow and sheep milk *** milk cream butter(CMCB)showed lower moisture content and higher fat content,smaller fat globules,and higher concentrations of long-chain saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids,resulting in improved potential health *** addition,CMCB showed yellow color,little salt,and butter taste as the main sensory characteristics,resulting in grateful and good digestibility *** milk cream addition improved the rheological properties of the products(lower viscosity,consistency index,and rigidity(J0),and higher fluidity and viscoelastic behavior(J1)),mainly due to the increased concentrations of short-chain and medium-chain saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty ***,sheep milk cream butter(SMCB)was characterized by a greasy and striking aroma,with a lower perception of good digestibility and good appearance,and a higher bitter *** association of cow and sheep milk cream could be an exciting option to obtain products with improved fatty acid profiles,health indices,and yet maintain desired rheological and sensory *** formulation with 60%sheep milk cream and 40%cow milk cream would be the suggested combination.

Mechanisms underlying the impaired contractility of diabetic cardiomyopathy

Cardiac dysfunction is a well-known consequence of diabetes,with sustained hyperglycaemia leading to the development of a cardiomyopathy that is independent of cardiovascular disease or *** models of diabetes are commonly used to study the pathophysiology of diabetic cardiomyopathy,with the hope that increased knowledge will lead ultimately to better therapeutic strategies being *** physiological temperature,left ventricular trabeculae isolated from the streptozotocin rat model of type 1 diabetes showed decreased stress and prolonged relaxation,but with no evidence that decreased contractility was a result of altered myocardial Ca2+*** sarcoplasmic reticulum(SR)Ca2+reuptake appeared slower in diabetic trabeculae,it was offset by an increase in actionpotential duration,thereby maintaining SR Ca2+content and favouring increased contraction *** analysis of t-tubule distribution by confocal imaging of ventricular tissue labeled with wheat germ agglutinin or ryanodine receptor antibodies showed a reduced T-power for diabetic tissue,but the differences were minor in comparison to other models of heart *** contractile dysfunction appeared to be the result of disrupted f-actin in conjunction with the increased typeⅠcollagen,with decreased myofilament Ca2+sensitivity contributing to the slowed relaxation.
