Se.ual size.dimorphism （SSD） is wide.pre.d among dive.se.animal taxa and has attracte. the.atte.tion of e.olutionary biologists for ove. a ce.tury. SSD is like.y to be.adaptive.and the.re.ult of dive.ge.t se.e.tion on diffe.e.t size.optima for male. and fe.ale., give. the.r diffe.e.t role. in re.roduction. The.de.e.opme.tal traje.tory le.ding to SSD may he.p us to unde.stand how se.e.tion acts on male.and fe.ale.size. He.e. we.de.cribe.the.growth and de.e.opme.t of two Australian praying mantids, Pse.domantis albofimbriata and Hie.odula majuscula including the.numbe. of moults, time.to adulthood, size.at e.ch moult, and the.de.re. of SSD. While.both spe.ie. e.hibit the.common patte.n of fe.ale.biase. SSD, the.numbe. of moults re.uire. for individuals to re.ch adulthood diffe.e. be.we.n male. and fe.ale. and be.we.n spe.ie.. De.pite.the.r large. adult size. P. albofimbriata fe.ale. re.uire.fe.e. moults and le.s time.than male. to re.ch adulthood, but are.significantly large. than male. from the.se.ond instar onwards. In contrast, H. majuscula male. re.che. adulthood in fe.e. moults, and le.s time.than fe.ale., howe.e. male. and fe.ale. did not diffe. in size.until fe.ale. we.t through the.r final moult into adulthood. H. majuscula also re.uire. more.time.and more.moults to re.ch adulthood than 17. albofimbriata. We.discuss the.e.diffe.e.t de.e.opme.tal pathways in light of the.e.isting knowle.ge.of re.roductive.biology for e.ch spe.ie.. We.also sugge.t that the.e.diffe.e.ce. may re.ate.to the.diffe.e.t phe.ologie. that occur in strongly se.sonal te.pe.ate.e.vironme.ts compare. with those.in the.tropics. Background Brain natriure.ic pe.tide.（BNP） is normally pre.e.t in low le.e.s in the.circulation, but it is e.e.ate. in paralle. with the.de.re. of conge.tion in he.rt failure.subje.ts （CHF）. BNP has natriure.ic e.fe.ts and is a pote.t vasodilator. It is sugge.te. that BNP could be.a the.ape.tic alte.native.in CHF. Howe.e., we.postulate. that the.high le.e.s of circulating BNP in CHF may downre.ulate.the.re.ponse.of microvascular natriure.ic re.e.tors. This was te.te. by comparing 15 CHF patie.ts （BNP 〉 3000 ng/L） with 10 matche., he.lthy controls. Me.hods Cutane.us microvascular blood flow in the.fore.rm was me.sure. by lase. Dopple. Flowme.ry. Local he.ting （＋44°C, 10 min） was use. to e.oke.a maximum local dilator re.ponse. Re.ults Non-invasive.iontophore.ic administration of e.the. BNP or ace.ylcholine.（ACh）, a known e.dothe.ium-de.e.de.t dilator, e.icite. an incre.se.in local flow. The.nitric oxide.synthase.inhibitor, l-N-Arginine. me.hyl-e.te. （L-NAMe., blocke. the.BNP re.ponse.（in controls）. Inte.e.tingly, re.ponse. to BNP in CHF patie.ts we.e.re.uce. to about one.third of those.se.n in he.lthy controls （incre.se.in flow： 251% in CHF vs. 908% in controls; P 〈 0.001）. In contrast, the.vasodilator re.ponse. to ACh and to local he.ting we.e.only some.hat atte.uate. in CHF patie.ts. Thus, dilator capacity and nitric oxide.signalling we.e.not af- fe.te. to the.same.e.te.t as BNP-me.iate. dilation, indicating a spe.ific downre.ulation of the.latte. re.ponse. Conclusions The.findings show for the.first time.that microvascular re.ponse. to BNP are.marke.ly re.uce. in CHF patie.ts. This is consiste.t with the.hypothe.is of BNP re.e.tor function is downre.ulate. in CHF.

In this study, we.e.amine. a group of ve.y old patie.ts with se.e.e.chronic he.rt failure.to te.t the.hypothe.is that vascular function is furthe. compromise. by a combination of he.rt failure.and aging. Me.hods Cutane.us fore.rm blood flow was me.sure. by lase. Dopple. flowme.ry and compare. among thre. groups： Group 1 （n = 20, me.n ±Se. 85.5 ±4 ye.rs）, he.rt failure.patie.ts with Ne. York He.rt Association class Ⅳ （NYHA Ⅳ） and with a NT-proBNP le.e. ≥5000 ng/L; Group 2 （n = 15, me.n ±Se. 76.5 ±2 ye.rs）, he.rt failure.patie.ts with NYHA II and NT-proBNP ≤2000 ng/L, and Group 3 （n = 10, me.n ±Se. 67.6 ±3.0 ye.rs）, he.lthy controls with no clinical signs of he.rt failure. The.vasodilator re.ponse.to the.iontophore.ic administration of ace.ylcholine.（ACh）, acting via an e.dothe.ial me.hanism, and sodium nitroprusside.（SNP）, acting via a smooth muscle.ce.l me.hanism, we.e.studie.. He.atic ste.tosis affe.ts 20% to 30% of the.ge.e.al adult population in the.we.te.n world. Curre.tly, the.te.hnique.of choice.for de.e.mining he.atic fat de.osition and the.stage.of fibrosis is live. biopsy. Howe.e., it is an invasive.proce.ure.and its use.is limite., particularly in childre.. It may also be.subje.t to sampling e.ror. Non-invasive.te.hnique. such as ultrasound, compute.ise. tomography (CT), magne.ic re.onance.imaging (MRI) and proton magne.ic re.onance.spe.troscopy (1H MRS) can de.e.t he.atic ste.tosis, but curre.tly cannot distinguish be.we.n simple.ste.tosis and ste.tohe.atitis, or stage.the.de.re. of fibrosis accurate.y. Intramyoce.lular lipids （IMCL） we.e.significantly re.uce. in the.tibialis muscle.（-28.2%）. De.re.se. in both IHCL （-39.9%） and sole.s IMCL （-12.2%） conte.t we.e.also obse.ve., although the.e.we.e.not significant. Se.e.al individuals showe. dramatic de.re.se. in IHCL, while.othe.s paradoxically showe. incre.se. in IHCL conte.t. Change. in body composition we.e.accompanie. by improve.e.ts in ce.tain live. function te.ts： se.um aspartate.aminotransfe.ase.（AST） and alanine.aminotransfe.ase.（ALT）. Significant corre.ations we.e.found be.we.n de.re.se. in IHCL and re.uctions in both intra-abdominal and abdominal subcutane.us AT. Improve.e.ts in live. function te.ts we.e.associate. with re.uctions in intra-abdominal AT, but not with change. in IHCL. CONCLUSION： This study shows that e.e. a ve.y mode.t re.uction in body we.ght achie.e. through life.tyle.modification can re.ult in change. in body fat de.ots and improve.e.ts in Le.s.
