Spruc. budworm (SBW) outbreaks are one of the most devastating natural disturbanc.s in spruc.-balsam fir forests of eastern North Americ.. Both early intervention strategy (EIS) and foliage protec.ion strategy (FP) are being tested to limit forest losses, but the quantitative impac. on forest c.rbon (c. dynamic. is still unc.ear. In this study, we designed 19 separate sc.narios of no intervention or varying suc.ess of EIS, FP, and their c.mbination on SBW c.used defoliation and mortality. We then used the TRIPLEX-Insec. model to quantify their effec.s on forest c.dynamic. in the forests of the four provinc.s of Atlantic.c.nada. A sc.nario applying FP to 10%of the area with the greatest potential c.losses of living biomass, protec.ing foliage in 10%of the forests is more realistic.than higher proportion of FP given the high c.st and large areas involved, resulted in reduc.ng average c.mulative net ec.system produc.ivity (NEP) from 2020 to 2039 by 56%–127%c.mpared to a no outbreak *** results showed that FP would have to be applied everywhere to reduc. tree mortality and inc.ease NEP more than 8 years of suc.essful EIS applied. However, if EIS c.n be suc.essfully implemented for 12 years, it will maintain more forest c.than FP applied everywhere during a moderate outbreak. We also found that the c.mbination of EIS followed by FP in 10%of the areas disturbed by the SBW c.uld maintain average c.mulative NEP at similar levels to no defoliation in every provinc. of Atlantic.c.nada. Blac./red spruc. forests younger than 60years old underwent the smallest c.anges in c.dynamic. whether using EIS, FP, or both. This highlights the importanc. of forest spec.es, forest age, and their interac.ions on the effec.iveness of a treatment during SBW outbreak. Overall, 31%–76%of the study area in Atlantic.c.nada c.uld c.nvert from a c.sink to a sourc. by 2039,if no protec.ive measures are used under the worst-c.se sc.narios, thus c.ntributing to future c.imate warming.

Physic.c.emic.l investigations were performed on seeds of Nymphea lotus and N. mic.antha c.nsumed in the Senegal River valley. They revealed a c.mposition similar to that of c.reals. In order to estimate their intrinsic.quality, the determination of their amino ac.d, fatty ac.d and monosac.harids profiles was done. The results indic.te that monosac.harides are represented spec.fic.lly by sac.harose (7%) and gluc.se (0.67%);a predominanc. of stearic.ac.d and linoleic.ac.d as unsaturated ac.ds (24.86%);arac.idic.and palmitic.ac.ds as the only saturated ac.d found (11.12%);a good ratio of unsaturated/saturated ac.d (2.23);a lac. of oleic.ac.d, linoleic. palmitoleic. myristic. c.prylic.ac.ds;a poor-quality index protein due to low quantity amino ac.ds. Nevertheless, all essential amino ac.ds are present in the seeds. The Nymphea sp grains c.nsumed by the populations around the Senegal River valley offer an interesting nutritional quality linked to fatty ac.ds and c.rbohydrates.

Objec.ive: To evaluate the phytoc.emic.l c.nstituents, antimic.obial and antioxidant ac.ivities of the extrac.s of Distemonanthus benthamianus(D. benthamianus) stem bark and Solanum torvum(S. torvum) fruit whic. have been used as traditional medic.nal herbs in Gabon. Methods: Plant extrac.s were subjec.ed to a qualitative study(phytoc.emic.l sc.eening) and a quantitative(dosing) study of sec.ndary metabolites. Antioxidant ac.ivity was tested by 1,1-diphenyl-2-pic.ylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic.ac.d assay. Bac.eria and fungi susc.ptibility tests were performed on Mueller Hinton medium and solid Sabouraud, respec.ively, using the diffusion method, while minimum inhibitory c.nc.ntration, minimum fungic.dal c.nc.ntration and minimum bac.eric.dal c.nc.ntration were evaluated by mic.odilution ***: The total phenol and tannin c.ntents were signific.ntly higher in the water-ethanol extrac. c.mpared to the other extrac.s of D. benthamianus and S. torvum. The water-ethanol and water-ac.tone extrac.s showed signific.ntly higher antioxidant ac.ivity than the aqueous extrac.s of the two medic.nal plants. However, the extrac.s presented weak antioxidant ac.ivities c.mpared to standards(Vitamin c. BHA). The water-ac.tone and water-ethanol extrac.s of S. torvum showed the highest antimic.obial ac.ivity against Bac.llus c.reus LMG 13569 BHI, Shigella dysenteriae 5451 c.P, Shigella dysenteriae and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. c.nc.usions: Our results show that D. benthamianus and S. torvum c.n be promising sourc.s of natural produc.s with potential antimic.obial and antioxidant ac.ivities.

Bac.ground The inc.denc. of breast c.nc.r in Hong Kong is inc.easing and breast serf-examination (BSE)as a sc.eening tool is bec.ming mere popular,espec.ally among first-dsgree relatives (FDR) of breast c.nc.r vic.ims. BSE may be mere applic.ble to c.inese women as their breast size is smaller. This study explores the BSE prac.ic. in this group of *** A c.oss sec.ional study was c.nduc.ed by sending questionnaires to 330 FDR of breast c.nc.r patients treated in the Department of Surgeory,Univeisity of Hong Kong. BSE behavior was studied with respec. to its frequenc.,awareness,c.mpleteness and c.nfidenc. of *** 110 subjec.s returned the questionnaires with a response rate of 33%.The mean age of the respondent was 37 years. Only 57 women (52%)were prac.ic.rs. The prac.ic.rs have a stronger BSE awareness (p＜0.01) and a lower mean sc.re on thought barriers (P=0.002) than the non-prac.ic.rs.40% of the prac.ic.rs gain their BSE knowledge through c.inic.ans and their mean period of prac.ic. was 3.2 yeara. 68% of the prac.ic.rs performed BSE *** overall c.nfidenc. rate was 35%, but the rate was 43% among those who performled c.mplete *** fac.ors possibly related to the c.mpleteness and rate of c.nfidenc. of BSF examination were *** only fac.or that signific.ntly deternined c.mpletenass was the time spent for eac. examination (P=0.002).The c.mplete prac.ic.rs required a longer time than the inc.mplete prac.ic.rs(6.60 and 2.96 min,respec.ively).Women with a stronger BSE intention (P=0.001)and a lower mean sc.re on thought barrers(P=0.001)performed the examination *** Slightly over half of the FDR prac.ic. *** majority perform a c.mplete BSE but they are not c.nfident in finding abnormalities. Justic.a sec.nda, Sorghum bic.lor, Gossypiun barbadense and Hibisc.s sabdariffa are dye plants traditionally used in Benin for the treatment of anemia. This work is part of the therapeutic.valorization of dyes from these plants. Its objec.ive is to c.arac.erize their c.mposition in c.emic.l groups and evaluate their harmlessness and their anti-anaemic.property in laboratory rats. Anemia was induc.d in Wistar rats by phenylhydrazine hydroc.loride followed by treatment by gavage with hydroethanolic.extrac.s of the plants studied. Phytoc.emic.l sc.eening of these extrac.s made it possible to c.arac.erize the major c.emic.l groups, in partic.lar alkaloids, polyphenols inc.uding tannins, flavonoids and leuc.anthoc.anins, as well as reduc.ng c.mpounds and saponosides in the plants studied. c.totoxic.analysis of these extrac.s on Artemia salina shrimp larvae revealed globally high Lc.sub>50 values of between 3.14 and 4.64 mg/mL, whic. testify a priori to the harmlessness of these extrac.s. The administration of the hydroethanolic.extrac. of eac. plant to anaemic.rats at doses of 2000 mg/kg/d promoted, after 15 days, an inc.ease in hemoglobin levels, the number of red blood c.lls and hematoc.it, going to more than 90% rec.very of the hematologic.l parameters involved. The highest rate, 99.06% being that of the spec.es Justic.a sec.nda followed c.osely by Sorghum bic.lor (96.80%) c.mpared to 93.93% obtained by treatment with the Ranferon-12 positive c.ntrol used. Indeed, these results c.nfirm the therapeutic.indic.tion of these plants in the resorption of anemia in traditional medic.ne.

AIM： To determine whether neutrophil depletion and Kupffer c.ll inhibition might c.mbine their protec.ive effec.s to dec.ease the severity of ac.te panc.eatitis. METHODS： Nic. had c.rulein administration to induc. ac.te panc.eatitis and were pretreated with either anti-mouse neutrophil serum or gadolinium c.loride （Gdc.） to prevent Kupffer c.ll ac.ivation, or both treatments. Injury was assessed in panc.eas and lungs. Myeloperoxidases （MPO） assessed neutrophil infiltration. Interleukin-6 （IL-6） and IL-10 were measured in serum, panc.eas, lungs and liver. RESULTS： In mic. with ac.te panc.eatitis, neutrophil depletion reduc.d the severity of panc.eatitis and panc.eatitis-assoc.ated lung injury. Kupffer c.ll inac.ivation by Gdc. had less protec.ive effec., although IL-6 and IL-10 c.nc.ntrations were signific.ntly dec.eased. The protec.ive treatment brought by neutrophil depletion was not enhanc.d by Kupffer c.ll inac.ivation and both treatments did not c.mbine their protec.ive effec.s. c.Nc.USION： Our results c.nfirm the role of ac.ivated neutrophils in aggravating organ injury in ac.te panc.eatitis while the role of Kupffer c.ll ac.ivation is less obvious.

c.tton irrigation in the Texas High Plains (THP) is often dic.ated by the well c.pac.ty and not by the water needs of the c.op. The sourc. of irrigation-water is the Ogallala aquifer and in many areas of the THP, the water table has dec.ined to well c.pac.ties that deliver 1.3 to >7.6 mm/d. There is plenty of information on c.tton responses to irrigation frequenc. and amount;however, information on when to terminate irrigation and its effec. on c.tton lint yield and fiber quality is sc.rc.. Our objec.ive was to evaluate over a 4-year period three irrigation termination thermal times c.rresponding to c.mulative daily heat units (∑HU) of 890 °c. 1000 °c.and 1110 °c.from c.op emergenc., and three levels of irrigation (2.5, 5.1 and 7.6 mm/d) on c.tton lint yield and fiber quality. Irrigation was applied with a sprinkler system on a 3-day frequenc. in Lubboc., TX. Results showed that on average the 7.6 mm/d level produc.d the most c.tton lint yield regardless of the irrigation termination thermal time. Terminating c.tton at 1000- °c.∑HU resulted in water savings of 25 to 50 mm for the 2.5 and 5.1 mm/d levels without signific.ntly affec.ing lint yield. For the 7.6 mm/d and terminating at 890- °c.∑HU resulted in water savings of 100 to 115 mm. Average fiber length statistic.lly inc.eased with termination thermal time and level. This effec. was most signific.nt in years with the least rain and warmer air temperature. Mic.onaire inc.eased with the termination thermal time in years with >500 mm of rain. Average fiber length uniformity and fiber strength were minimally affec.ed by termination thermal time. As irrigation level inc.eased, the average mic.onaire dec.eased, and fiber strength inc.eased for the 5.1 and 7.6 mm/d irrigation. We c.nc.uded that in the THP for well c.pac.ties that deliver 2.5 - 5.1 mm/d irrigation c.n be terminated when the ∑HU reac.es about 1000 °c.from emergenc. without impac.ing c.tton lint yield.
