Neurons are notoriously vulnerable cell *** the slightest change in their internal and/or external environments will cause much distress and dysfunction,leading often to their death.A range of pathological conditions,including stroke,head trauma,and neurodegenerative disease,can generate stress in neurons,affecting their survival and proper *** most neural pathologies,mitochondria become dysfunctional and this plays a pivotal role in the process of cell *** challenge over the last few decades has been to develop effective interventions that improve neuronal homeostasis under pathological *** interventions,often referred to as disease-modifying or neuroprotective,have,however,proved frustratingly elusive,at both preclinical and,in particular,clinical *** this perspective,we highlight two factors that we feel are key to the development of effective neuroprotective *** are:firstly,the choice of dose of intervention and method of application,and secondly,the selection of subjects,whether they be patients or the animal model.

The National Road RN 91 has been threatened for about twenty-five years by a huge landslide, located 25 km south-east to the town of Grenoble (France). If several million cubic meters of rock fall down, the debris will dam the valley. Then the failure of the dam by overtopping and rapid erosion might result in a catastrophic flood and dramatic consequences for human life, environment and economy throughout the valley. The paper presents the hazard assessment based on geological and hydrological surveys, including small scale hydraulic tests, as well as the risk evaluation that has been performed. The risk management relies first upon a high level monitoring and an emergency plan; various mitigation strategies have been considered.

Background:Digestive disorders in weaning pigs remain a major challenge for swine *** types of commercial feed additives have been developed to promote gut health and development in young pigs,but their effects on resident gut microbial communities remain largely *** aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a peptide-based product(Peptiva)in combination with mannose oligosaccharides(MOS)and an exogenous protease on the performance and fecal microbiome of nursery ***:A total of 1097 weaned pigs were divided into 44 pens(24-26 pigs/pen)with each pen randomly assigned to one of four experimental diets as part of Phase Ⅱ and Phase Ⅲ of a standard nursery phase feeding *** samples collected from representative control and treatment pigs were used to investigate bacterial composition profiles by high throughput sequencing of PCR-generated amplicons targeting the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA ***:Higher gain:feed was observed for pigs fed Peptiva and MOS compared to Controls during the period when experimental diets were fed,but the benefits of supplementation were not maintained after pigs were transitioned to a non-supplemented *** candidate bacterial species,identified as Operational Taxonomic Units(OTUs),were found to have significantly different abundances between control samples and treatment samples during the same *** Phase Ⅲ samples,SD_Ssd-00039,predicted to be a strain of streptococcus alactolyticus based on nucleotide sequence identity,was the most highly represented of these OTUs with an average abundance in pigs fed Peptiva,MOS and protease that was 3.9 times higher than in *** report also presents evidence of microbial succession that occurred during the trial,with 16 of the 32 most abundant OTUs found to vary between Phase Ⅱ and Phase Ⅲ samples for the same dietary ***:Dietary supplementation with a combination of a peptide-based product,MOS,and protease in

In this comment on the article“Locating the source field lines of Jovian decametric radio emissions”by Wang YM et al.,2020,we discuss the assumptions used by the authors to compute the beaming angle of Jupiter’s decametric emissions induced by the moon *** method,relying on multi-point radio observations,was applied to a single event observed on 14th March 2014 by Wind and both stEREO A/B spacecraft from~5 to~16 *** have erroneously identified the emission as a northern(Io-B type)instead of a southern one(Io-D type).We encourage the authors to update their results with the correct hemisphere of origin and to test their method on a larger sample of Jupiter-Io emissions.

Recently,multivalent aqueous calcium-ion batteries(CIBs)have attracted considerable attention as a possible alternative to Li-ion ***,traditional Ca-ion storage materials show either limited rate capabilities and poor cycle life or insufficient specific ***,we tackle these limitations by exploring materials having a large interlayer distance to achieve decent specific capacities and one-dimensional architecture with adequate Ca-ion passages that enable rapid reversible(de)intercalation *** this work,we report the high-yield,rapid,and low-cost synthesis of 1D metal oxides MV_(3)O_(8)(M=Li,K),CaV_(2)O_(6),and CaV_(6)O_(16)·7H_(2)O(CVO)via a molten salt ***,using 1D CVO as electrode materials,we show high capacity 205 mA h g^(-1),long cycle life(>97%capacity retention after 200 cycles at 3.0 C),and high-rate performance(117 mA h g^(-1) at 12 C)for Ca-ion(de)*** work represents a step forward for the development of the molten salt method to synthesize nanomaterials and to help pave the way for the future growth of Ca-ion batteries.

Contraction joint shear keys are resilient features of gravity dams that can be considered to increase the sliding safety factors or minimise seismic residual sliding displacements,allowing costly remedial actions to be *** paper presents a novel,robust,and computationally efficient three-dimensional(3D)modelling and simulation strategy of gravity dams,using a series of adjacent cantilever beam elements to represent individual *** monoliths are interconnected in the longitudinal direction by 3D no-tension link elements representing the lumped shear key stiffness contributions at a particular *** objective is to assess the shear key internal force demands,including the axial force,shear,and moment *** key demand-capacity ratios can then be assessed with related multi-axial failure *** 3D link element stiffness coefficients were derived from a series of 3D finite element(FE)solid models with a detailed representation of geometrical features of multiple shear *** results from the proposed method based on advanced grillage analysis show strong agreement with reference solutions from 3D FE solid models,demonstrating high accuracy and performance of the proposed *** application of the proposed advanced grillage method to a dam model with two monoliths clearly shows the advantage of the proposed method,in comparison to the classical approach used in practise.

Acute variceal hemorrhage,a life-threatening condition that requires a multidisciplinary approach for effective therapy,is defined as visible bleeding from an esophageal or gastric varix at the time of endoscopy,the presence of large esophageal varices with recent stigmata of bleeding,or fresh blood visible in the stomach with no other source of bleeding *** of blood products,pharmacological treatments and early endoscopic therapy are often effective;however,if primary hemostasis cannot be obtained or if uncontrollable early rebleeding occurs,transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS)is recommended as rescue *** TIPS represents a major advance in the treatment of complications of portal *** variceal hemorrhage that is poorly controlled with endoscopic therapy is generally well controlled with TIPS,which has a 90%to 100%success ***,TIPS is associated with a mortality of 30%to 50%in such a *** TIPS should be considered early in patients with refractory variceal bleeding once medical treatment and endoscopic sclerotherapy failure,before the clinical condition ***,admission to specialized centers is mandatory in such a setting and regional protocols are essential to be organized *** review article discusses initial management and then focuses on the specific role of TIPS as a primary therapy to control acute variceal hemorrhage,particularly as a rescue therapy following failure of endoscopic approaches.

Antiferromagnets offer great potential for high-speed data processing applications,as they can expend spintronic devices from a static storage and gigahertz frequency range to the terahertz ***,their zero net magnetization makes them difficult to manipulate and *** recent years,there has been a lot of attention given to the ultrafast manipulation of magnetic order using ultra-short single laser pulses,but it remains unknown whether a similar scenario can be observed in *** this work,we demonstrate the manipulation of antiferromagnets with a single femtosecond laser pulse in perpendicular exchange-biased Co/Ir Mn/Co Gd *** study the dual exchange bias interlayer interaction in quasi-static conditions and competition in ultrafast antiferromagnet *** results show that,compared to conventional ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic systems,the Ir Mn antiferromagnet can be ultrafast and efficiently manipulated by the coupled Co Gd ferrimagnetic layer,which paves the way for potential energy-efficient spintronic devices.
