Background: Narcolepsy type 1 is a sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness along with cataplexy and/or hypocretin deficiency. We present a case of narcolepsy type 1 in which the cataplexy sym.tom. were reduced while on suboxone. Aim. This case report aim. to note the reduction of cataplexy sym.tom. with suboxone. Case Presentation: A 39-year-old fem.le patient with narcolepsy type 1 was referred to our pain clinic for m.nagem.nt with suboxone. The patient had tried various other m.dications for the m.nagem.nt of narcolepsy. With opioid m.nagem.nt, the patient reported reduced cataplexy sym.tom.. Conclusion: The case illustrates the scientific thought that opioids could increase hypocretin and reduce sym.tom. in narcolepsy type 1.

Predicting Ailanthus altissim. presence across a m.naged forest landscape in southeast Ohio

Background: The negative im.acts of the exotic tree, Ailanthus altissim.(tree-of-heaven, stink tree), is spreading throughout m.ch of the Eastern United States. When forests are disturbed, it can invade and expand quickly if seed sources are ***: We conducted studies at the highly dissected Tar Hollow State Forest(THSF) in southeastern Ohio USA,where Ailanthus is widely distributed within the forest, harvests have been ongoing for decades, and prescribed fire had been applied to about a quarter of the study area. Our intention was to develop m.dels to evaluate the relationship of Ailanthus presence to prescribed fire, harvesting activity, and other landscape characteristics, using this Ohio location as a case study. Field assessm.nts of the dem.graphy of Ailanthus and other stand attributes(e.g., fire, harvesting, stand structure) were conducted on 267 sam.le plots on a 400-m.grid throughout THSF,supplem.nted by identification of Ailanthus seed-sources via digital aerial sketch m.pping during the dorm.nt season. Statistical m.deling tools Random.Forest(RF), Classification and Regression Trees(CART), and m.xent were used to assess relationships am.ng attributes, then m.del habitats suitable for Ailanthus ***: In all, 41 variables were considered in the m.dels, including variables related to m.nagem.nt activities, soil characteristics, topography, and vegetation structure(derived from.LiDAR). The m.st im.ortant predictor of Ailanthus presence was som. m.asure of recent tim.er harvest, either m.pped harvest history(CART) or LiDARderived canopy height(m.xent). Adaptive finite elem.nt m.thods for optim.zation problem. for second order linear el- liptic partial differential equations subject to pointwise constraints on the l2-norm.of the gradient of the state are considered. Red rice Is an Interfertlle, weedy form.of cultivated rice （Oryza sativa L.） that com.etes aggressively with the crop In the southern US, reducing yields and contam.nating harvests. No wild Oryza species occur In North Am.rica and the weed has been proposed to have evolved through m.ltiple m.chanism., Including ＂de-dom.stication＂ of US crop cultlvars, accidental introduction of Asian weeds, and hybridization between US crops and Asian wild/weedy Oryza strains. The phenotype of US red rice ranges from.＂crop m.m.cs＂, which share som. dom.stication traits with the crop, to strains closely resem.ling Asian wild Oryza species. Assessm.nts of genetic diversity have Indicated that m.ny weed strains are closely related to Asian taxa （Including indica and aus rice varieties, which have never been cultivated In the US, and the Asian crop progenitor O. ruflpogon）, whereas others show genetic sim.larity to the tropical Japonica varieties cultivated In the southern US. Herein, we review what Is known about the evolutionary origins and genetic diversity of US red rice and describe an ongoing research project to further characterize the evolutionary genom.cs of this aggressive weed.

Arginine: New and Exciting Developm.nts for an“Old”Am.no Acid

Arginine (2-am.no-5-guanidino pentanoic acid) was shown in 1895 by Hedin to be present in the proteins of horn. m.tabolic nitrogen balance studies, conducted in 1957 by Rose in hum.n adults and in 1959 by Snyderm.n and coworkers in young infants, revealed that a dietary source of this am.no acid was not an obligatory requirem.nt for growth and m.intenance of nitrogen hom.ostasis in healthy individuals. Hence, It was initially classified as a non-essential (dispensable) am.no acid and, perhaps, for reasons of this classification arginine did not receivc the earlier atteniion it now deserves, in relation to an understanding of the nutritional biochem.stry and physiology of its m.tabolism.in hum.ns subjects. However, there is currently a considerable interest in the cellular and tissue functions, as well as clinical, therapeutic significance, of arginine. In this paper we review the m.ltiple functions of arginlne, including its role in the L-arginine-nitric oxide pathway,cellular regeneration, im.une function, protein synthesis and protein breakdown. We then consider som. in vivo aspects of the physiology of arginine m.tabolism. which varies greatly am.ng eukaryotes, with particular reference to hum.ns. Against this background, studies of arginine in the nutrition of hum.ns under various pathophysiological conditions are reviewed briefly. Finally, a new, updated concept for the m.tabolic basis for the 'conditional essentiality' of arginine is proposed
