Exposure to perfluorinated alkyl acids（PFAAs） has been linked to many harmful health effects including reproductive disorders, developmental delays, and altered liver and kidney function. Most human exposure to environmental contaminants, including PFAAs,occurs through consumption of contaminated food or drinking water. This study uses PFAA data from meat samples collected from recreationally harvested American alligators（Alligator mississippiensis） in South Carolina to assess potential dietary exposure of hunters and their families to PFAAs. Consumption patterns were investigated using intercept surveys of 23 hunters at a wild game meat processor. An exposure scenario using the average consumption frequency, portion size, and median perfluorooctane sulfonic acid（PFOS） concentration in alligator meat from all hunt units found the daily dietary exposure to be 2.11 ng/kg body weight per day for an adult human. Dietary PFOS exposure scenarios based on location of harvest suggested the highest daily exposure occurs with alligator meat from the Middle Coastal hunt unit in South Carolina. Although no samples were found to exceed the recommended threshold for no consumption of PFOS found in Minnesota state guidelines, exposure to a mixture of PFAAs found in alligator meat and site-specific exposures based on harvest location should be considered in determining an appropriate guideline for vulnerable populations potentially exposed to PFAAs through consumption of wild alligator meat.

Environmental contamination resulting from the production or release of harmful chemicals can lead to negative consequences for wildlife and human health. Perfluorinated alkyl acids（PFAAs） were historically produced as protective coatings for many household items and currently persist in the environment, wildlife, and humans. PFAAs have been linked to immune suppression, endocrine disruption, and developmental toxicity in wildlife and laboratory studies. This study examines the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis,as an important indicator of ecosystem contamination and a potential pathway for PFAA exposure in humans. Alligator meat harvested in the 2015 South Carolina（SC） public hunt season and prepared for human consumption was collected and analyzed for PFAAs to determine meat concentrations and relationships with animal body size（total length）, sex, and location of harvest. Of the 15 PFAAs analyzed, perfluorooctane sulfonate（PFOS） was found in all alligator meat samples and at the highest concentrations（median 6.73 ng/g）. No relationship was found between PFAA concentrations and total length or *** of one or all compounds varied significantly across sampling locations, with alligators harvested in the Middle Coastal hunt unit having the highest PFOS concentrations（median 16.0 ng/g; p = 0.0001）. Alligators harvested specifically from Berkley County, SC（located in the Middle Coastal hunt unit） had the highest PFOS concentrations and the greatest number of PFAAs detected（p 〈 0.0001）. The site-specific nature of PFAA concentrations in alligator meat observed in this study suggests a source of PFAA contamination in Berkley County, SC.

The effect of total carbon on microscopic soil properties and implications for crop production

Soil structure is a dynamic property affected by physical, chemical, and microbiological processes. Addition of organic matter to soils and the use of different management practices have been reported to impact soil structure and crop production. Moderation in soil temperature and increases in microbial activity and soil water retention are often suggested as reasons for the rise in crop yield when organic matter is added to the soil. Less is known about the direct effect of changes in soil structure on crop production. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of summer cover crop and in-season management system on soil structure. The experiment was a nested design with summer cover crop as the main plot and management system as the subplot. Summer cover crop treatments included cowpea （Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.） incorporated into the soil in the fall （CI）, cowpea used as mulch in the fall （CM）, sudangrass （Sorghum vulgare） incorporated into the soil in the fall （S）, and dry fallow or bare ground （B）. Management systems were organic （ORG） and conventional （CNV） systems. Lettuce （Lactuca sativa L.） and cantaloupes （Cucumis melo L.） were cultivated in rotation in the plots for three consecutive years using the same cover crops and management systems for each plot. Disturbed and undisturbed soil cores were collected at the end of the third year and used for laboratory experiments to measure physical, chemical, and hy- draulic properties. Image analysis was used to quantify soil structure properties using a scanning electron micro- scope on thin sections prepared from the undisturbed soil cores. We found that total soil carbon was correlated with porosity, saturation percentage, and pore roughness. Pore roughness was correlated with crop production in gen- eral and with marketable production in particular. 蛛网膜下腔出血（subarachnoidhemorrhage，SAH）是一种可对中枢神经系统造成毁灭性打击并对其他多个器官产生显著影响的急性脑血管病。SAH患者被常规收入重症监护病房并由多学科团队进行治疗。由于高质量研究证据的缺乏，使得治疗方法各异，可供选择的指导意见不多。现有的指南主要强调危险因素、预防、自然史以及再出血的预防，很少涉及SAH患者的重症监护问题。美国神经危重症监护学会组织了一次国际性多学科共识会议来探讨SAH的重症监护处理。根据发表的文章和研究领域，此次会议召集了来自欧洲和北美地区的神经重症监护科、神经外科、神经内科、介入神经放射科和神经麻醉科方面的专家。根据临床经验和制定实践指南方面的经验，选择4名经验丰富的神经重症监护专家组成评判委员会。应用推荐分级的评估、制定与评价（GradesofRecommendationsAssessment，DevelopmentandEvaluation，GRADE）系统进行文献回顾，结合参会者的经验、评判委员会的审评以及文献讨论产生推荐意见。应用GRADE系统制定推荐意见，其制定原则不仅强调研究资料的质量，而且还重视利弊权衡与实践转化。对SAH患者日常处理过程中面临的所有问题均提供指导和推荐意见，即使缺乏高质量的证据。

研究表明,家族性阿尔茨海默病(FAD)患者处于无症状或临床前阶段时,脑白质即出现病理改变。此种改变在髓鞘破坏及阿尔茨海默病(AD)病理生理中的作用有待进一步研究阐明。笔者前期研究证实,三重转基因AD小鼠(人淀粉前体蛋白基因的Swedish突变,早老素-1 M146V(PS1M146V)敲入突变及tauP301L突变)表现出类似FAD患者的髓鞘破坏,Aβ1-42促进了白质病变。本研究离体实验证实,PS1M146V变异导致小鼠少突胶质前体细胞在分化过程中易出现类似Aβ1-42诱导的变化。PS1M146V的表达损伤少突胶质前体细胞的功能并影响髓鞘碱性蛋白的分布,暴露于Aβ1-42加重此影响。由PS1M146V及Aβ1-42导致的髓鞘破坏及髓鞘碱性蛋白在亚细胞结构中的误定位可被TWS119(糖原合成激酶(GSK)-3β抑制剂)抑制,提示GSK-3β激酶活动在此病理过程中有重要作用。综上所述,本研究有助于增加对AD早期无症状阶段,由PS1M146V及Aβ1-42导致少突胶质细胞功能异常及髓鞘损伤的机制的理解,并提供了针对少突胶质细胞预防AD相关白质病变的新的治疗靶点。

Objective The Cox maze Ⅲprocedure has excellent long-term efficacy in curing atrial fibrillation. It has not been widely practiced because it is technically challenging and requires prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass. The aim of this study was to examine a simplified Cox maze Ⅲprocedure that uses bipolar radiofrequency energy as an ablative source. Methods Beginning january 2002, a total of 40 consecutive patients underwent a modified Cox maze Ⅲprocedurewith bipolar radiofrequency energy. Nineteen had a lone maze procedure and 21 had a maze procedure plus a concomitant operation. Onemonth after the operation, the first 8 patients were investigated with highresolutionmagnetic resonance imaging. Patientswere followed up monthly with clinical examination and electrocardiography. Results There was no operative deaths. The crossclamp times were 47±26 minutes for the modified lone Cox maze Ⅲprocedure and 92±37 minutes for the Coxmaze Ⅲprocedure plus concomitant procedures. These were significantly shorter than our previous times for the traditional Cox maze Ⅲprocedure(93±34 minutes and 122±37 minutes, respectively, P < .05). Follow-up magnetic resonance imaging showed no evidence of pulmonary vein stenosis, and atrial contractility was preserved in all patients. There were no late strokes. At 6-month followup, 91%of patients (21/23) were in sinus rhythm. Conclusions Bipolar radiofrequency ablation can be used to replace the surgical incisions of the Cox maze procedure. This energy source did not result in pulmonary vein stenosis. The modification of the Cox maze Ⅲprocedure to use bipolar radiofrequency ablation simplified and shortened this procedurewithout sacrificing short-term efficacy.
