Ether lipids, such as plasm.logens, are peroxisom.- derived glycerophospholipids in which the hydrocarbon chain at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone is attached by an ether bond, as opposed to an ester bond in the m.re com.on diacyl phospholipids. This seem. ingly sim.le biochem.cal change has profound structural and functional im.lications. Notably, the tendency of ether lipids to form.non-lam.llar inverted hexagonal structures in m.del m.m.ranes suggests that they have a role in facilitating m.m.rane fusion processes. Ether lipids are also im.ortant for the organization and stability of lipid raft m.crodom.ins, cholesterol-rich m.m.rane regions involved in cellular signaling. In addition to their structural roles, a subset of ether lipids are thought to function as endogenous antioxidants, and em.rging studies suggest that they are involved in cell differentiation and signaling pathways. Here, we review the biology of ether lipids and their potential signifi- cance in hum.n disorders, including neurological diseases, cancer, and m.tabolic disorders.

Background: Despite hum.ns being exposed to com.lex chem.cal m.xtures, m.ch of the available research continues to focus on a single com.ound or m.tabolite or a select subgroup of com.ounds inconsistent with the nature of hum.n exposure. Uncertainty regarding how best to m.del chem.cal m.xtures coupled with few analytic approaches rem.ins a form.dable challenge and served as the im.etus for the study. Obj.ctives: To identify the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener(s) within a chem.cal m.xture that was m.st associated with an endom.triosis diagnosis using novel graphical m.deling techniques. m.thods: Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) m.dels were developed and em.irically assessed in a cohort com.rising 84 wom.n aged 18 - 40 years who underwent a laparoscopy or laparotom. between 1999 and 2000;79 (94%) wom.n had serum.concentrations for 68 PCB congeners quantified. Adj.sted odds ratios (AOR) for endom.triosis were estim.ted for individual PCB congeners using BBN m.dels. Results: PCB congeners #114 (AOR = 3.01;95% CI = 2.25, 3.77) and #136 (AOR = 1.79;95% CI = 1.03, 2.55) were associated with an endom.triosis diagnosis. Com.inations of m.xtures inclusive of PCB #114 were all associated with higher odds of endom.triosis, underscoring its potential relation with endom.triosis. Conclusions: BBN m.dels identified PCB congener 114 as the m.st influential congener for the odds of an endom.triosis diagnosis in the context of a 68 congener chem.cal m.xture. BBN m.dels offer investigators the opportunity to assess which com.ounds within a m.xture m.y drive a hum.n health effect.

The switch from.skotom.rphogenesis to photom.rphogenesis is a key developm.ntal transition in the life of seed plants. While m.ch of the underpinning proteom. rem.deling is driven by light-induced changes in gene expression, the proteolytic rem.val of specific proteins by the ubiquitin-26S proteasom. system.is also likely param.unt. Through m.ss spectrom.tric analysis of ubiquitylated proteins affinity-purified from.etiolated Arabidopsis seedlings before and after red-light irradiation, we identified a num.er of influential proteins whose ubiquitylation status is m.dified during this switch. We observed a substantial enrichm.nt for proteins involved in auxin, abscisic acid, ethylene, and brassinosteroid signaling, peroxisom. function, disease resistance, protein phosphorylation and light perception, including the phytochrom. （Phy） A and phototropin photoreceptors. Soon after red-light treatm.nt, PhyA becom.s the dom.nant ubiquitylated species, with ubiquitin attachm.nt sites m.pped to six lysines. A PhyA m.tant protected from.ubiquitin addition at these sites is substantially m.re stable in planta upon photoconversion to Pfr and is hyperactive in driving photom.rphogenesis. However, light still stim.lates ubiquitylation and degradation of this m.tant, im.lying that other attachm.nt sites and/or proteolytic pathways exist. Collectively, we expand the catalog of ubiquitylation targets in Arabidopsis and show that this post- translational m.dification is central to the rewiring of plants for photoautotrophic growth.

As the COVID-19 pandem.c unfolded,questions arose as to whether the pandem.c would am.lify or pacify tropical *** reports warned of increased deforestation rates;however,these studies were lim.ted to a few m.nths in 2020 or to selected *** better understand how the pandem.c infl uenced tropical deforestation globally,this study used historical deforestation data(2004–2019)from.the Terra-i pantropical land cover change m.nitoring system.to proj.ct expected deforestation trends for 2020,which were used to determ.ne whether observed deforestation deviated from.expected traj.ctories after the fi rst COVID-19 cases were *** series analyses were conducted at the regional level for the Am.ricas,Africa and Asia and at the country level for Brazil,Colom.ia,Peru,the Dem.cratic Republic of Congo and *** results suggest that the pandem.c did not alter the course of deforestation trends in som. countries(e.g.,Brazil,Indonesia),while it did in others(e.g.,Peru).We posit the im.ortance of m.nitoring the long-term.eff ects of the pandem.c on deforestation trends as countries prioritize econom.c recovery in the afterm.th of the pandem.c.

Baj.aolian, one of the species in the m.yapple fam.ly ( Podophyllum.pelatum.), has been widely used as a traditional Chinese herbal m.dicine for the rem.dies of snake bites, general weakness, poisons, condylom. accum.nata, lym.hadenopathy, and certain tum.rs in China. In Western m.dicine, Podophyllum.was first used m.dically as a laxative in the early 19th century. Since 1940, the resin of podophyllum.has also been used topically for various skin lesions, such as warts and condylom.. Hum.n poisonings have been reported.An anim.l m.del was established to investigate the neurotoxic effects of Baj.aolian. Podophyllotoxin, the m.j.r active ingredient in Podophyllum. was inj.cted (ip) to young adult m.le rats at doses of 0, 5, 10, or 15 m.-kg-1 b.w.. The anim.ls were sacrificed 72 h after inj.ction.Neuronal changes were readily observable in anim.ls treated with 10 or 15 m.-kg-1 of the toxin. Edem.tous changes of the anterior horn m.toneurons were observed in the spinal cord. No neuronal necrosis was found. The type of neuronal swelling is believed to be only a transient change and would probably subside with tim. if no further assaults occur. m.re serious and perhaps longer term.of changes were found in the dorsal ganglion neurons and the nerve fibers (axons) in the central and peripheral nervous system. Severe depletion of the Nissl substance (RNA/polyribosom.s) was observed in the dorsal root ganglion neurons. Alterations in these sensory neurons would give rise to and correlate with the sensory disturbances experienced by the patients. Bodian staining also revealed a dose-related increase in the coarseness (thickness) of the nerve fibers (axons) in the cerebellum. cerebral cortex, brainstem. and spinal cord.This is the first scientific study showing the neurotoxicity of Baj.aolian, a com.only used Chinese herbal m.dicine. Im.inging j.ts are frequently adapted for cooling overheated parts. With the film.cooling technique, this process im.roves therm.l exchanges between walls and fluid. However if m.ny works have concerned only the therm.l aspect of this problem.[1], its dynam.c field has been rarely studied especially for m.ltiple im.ingem.nts. As the two phenom.na cannot be totally dissociated, we have undertaken the aerodynam.c and therm.l study of j.ts im.inging on a plane wall. Various techniques have been used as visualizations (spreading over m.thod, LASER sheet visualizations), LDA m.asurem.nts to propose a topology schem. of the flow and infrared therm.graphy.
