Predicting Ailanthus altissima presence across a managed forest landscape in southeast Ohio

Background: The negative impacts of the exotic tree, Ailanthus altissima(tree-of-heaven, stink tree), is spreading throughout much of the Eastern United States. When forests are disturbed, it can invade and expand quickly if seed sources are ***: We conducted studies at the highly dissected Tar Hollow State Forest(THSF) in southeastern Ohio USA,where Ailanthus is widely distributed within the forest, harvests have been ongoing for decades, and prescribed fire had been applied to about a quarter of the study area. Our intention was to develop models to evaluate the relationship of Ailanthus presence to prescribed fire, harvesting activity, and other landscape characteristics, using this Ohio location as a case study. Field assessments of the demography of Ailanthus and other stand attributes(e.g., fire, harvesting, stand structure) were conducted on 267 sample plots on a 400-m grid throughout THSF,supplemented by identification of Ailanthus seed-sources via digital aerial sketch mapping during the dormant season. Statistical modeling tools random Forest(rF), Classification and regression Trees(CArT), and Maxent were used to assess relationships among attributes, then model habitats suitable for Ailanthus ***: In all, 41 variables were considered in the models, including variables related to management activities, soil characteristics, topography, and vegetation structure(derived from LiDAr). The most important predictor of Ailanthus presence was some measure of recent timber harvest, either mapped harvest history(CArT) or LiDArderived canopy height(Maxent). Importantly, neither prescribed fire or soil variables appeared as important predictors of Ailanthus presence or absence in any of the models of the ***: These modeling techniques provide tools and methodologies for assessing landscapes for Ailanthus invasion, as well as those areas with higher potentials for invasion should seed sources become available. Effects of Climate Change and Shifts in Forest Composition on Forest Net Primary Production

Forests are dynamic in both structure and species composition, and these dynamics are strongly influenced by climate. However, the net effects of future tree species composition on net primary production （NPP） are not well understood. The objective of this work was to model the potential range shifts of tree species （DISTrIB Model） and predict their impacts on NPP （PnET-Ⅱ Model） that will be associated with alterations in species composition. We selected four 200 × 200 km areas in Wisconsin, Maine, Arkansas, and the Ohio-West Virginia area, representing focal areas of potential species range shifts. PnET-Ⅱ model simulations were carried out assuming that all forests achieved steady state, of which the species compositions were predicted by DISTrIB model with no migration limitation. The total NPP under the current climate ranged from 552 to 908 g C/m^2 per year. The effects of potential species redistributions on NPP were moderate （-12% to ＋8%） compared with the influence of future climatic changes （-60% to ＋25%）. The direction and magnitude of climate change effects on NPP were largely dependent on the degree of warming and water balance. Thus, the magnitude of future climate change can affect the feedback system between the atmosphere and biosphere.

The valorization of Amazonian wood residues into active chemical compounds could be an eco-friendly,cost-effective and valuable way to develop wood preservative formulations to enhance the decay and termite resistance of low-durable wood ***(Vouacapoua americana.,Fabaceae)is a well-known Guianese wood spe-cies commonly used in local wood construction due to its outstanding natural durability,which results from the presence of a large panel of extractives *** addition,its industrial processing generates large amounts of *** residues were extracted by maceration using four different solvents(water/ethanol,ethyl acetate,hexane and dichloromethane/methanol),separately and *** yield of each extractive fraction was determined,and their chemical compositions were analyzed by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry(LC-MS).Ethyl acetate led to the highest extraction yield,and the active compounds were identiﬁed in the obtained extractive *** this sense,the fungicidal and termite-repellent properties of these extractives were then tested using a screening laboratory(with temperate and tropical microorganisms),according to the solution concentration(1%,2.5%,5%,8%and 10%).Finally,Virola michelii Heckel wood samples(low durable species)were impregnated with the 8%concentration *** impregnated wood samples were then exposed to a soil bed *** results highlighted that the nature of the solvent used during wood maceration affects the con-tent of the obtained extractive ***-Performance Liquid Chromatography–High-resolution Mass Spectrometry(UHPLC-HrMS)analyses showed the inﬂuence of extraction parameters on the nature of the extracted *** extracts(from ethyl acetate maceration)showed good anti-fungal and anti-termite ***,the concentration in extractives had an impact on the anti-termite activity level for reti-culitermesﬂavipes and Cryptotermes *** based on W

A classical result of A. D. Alexandrov states that a connected compact smooth n-dimensional manifold without boundary, embedded in r^n＋1, and such that its mean curvature is constant, is a sphere. Here we study the problem of symmetry of M in a hyperplane Xn＋1 =constant in case M satisfies： for any two points （X^1, ^↑Xn＋1）, （X^1, Xn＋1） on M, with Xn＋1 〉^↑Xn＋1, the mean curvature at the first is not greater than that at the second. Symmetry need not always hold, but in this paper, we establish it under some additional conditions. Some variations of the Hopf Lemma are also presented. Several open problems are described. Part I dealt with corresponding one dimensional problems.

Targeting MYCN and ALK in resistant and relapsing neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma, a tumor of peripheral nerve, is the most common solid tumor of young children. In high-risk disease, which comprises approximately half of patients, death from chemotherapy-resistant, metastatic relapse is very frequent. Children who relapse exhibit clonal enrichment of two genomic alterations: high-level amplification of the MYCN oncogene, and kinase domain mutations of the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene. Overall survival in this patient cohort is less than 15% at 3 years, and there are few options for rationally targeted therapy. Neuroblastoma patients exhibit de novo resistance to many existing ALK inhibitors, and no clinical therapeutics to target MYCN have yet been developed. This review outlines the international efforts to uncover mechanisms of oncogenic action that are therapeutically targetable using small-molecule inhibitors. We describe a mechanistic interaction in which ALK upregulates MYCN transcription, and discuss clinical trials emerging to develop transcriptional inhibitors of MYCN, and to identify effective inhibitors of ALK in neuroblastoma patients.

Machine learning for enumeration of cell colony forming units

As one of the most widely used assays in biological research,an enumeration of the bacterial cell colonies is an important but time-consuming and labor-intensive *** speed up the colony counting,a machine learning method is presented for counting the colony forming units(CFUs),which is referred to as *** cellcounting program processes digital images and segments bacterial *** algorithm combines unsupervised machine learning,iterative adaptive thresholding,and local-minima-based watershed segmentation to enable an accurate and robust cell *** to a manual counting method,CFUCounter supports color-based CFU classification,allows plates containing heterologous colonies to be counted individually,and demonstrates overall performance(slope 0.996,SD 0.013,95%CI:0.97–1.02,p valuer=0.999)indistinguishable from the gold standard of point-and-click *** CFUCounter application is open-source and easy to use as a unique addition to the arsenal of colony-counting tools.

Phase coexistence properties of liquid mercury:a simulation study

The thermophysical properties of expanded liquid mercury have been investigated along the liquid-vapor coexistence curve by using Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamic simulations. For the purpose, an empirical state dependent interatomic potential for the region of dense metallic liquid is used, while the state dependence is not necessary near the cliffcal point. In order to test the validity of this potential, we determine the surface layering and the sound velocity, two properties very sensitive to the choice of the potential. Our results are in quite good agreement with other theoretical results and to the experimental data available in the literature.
