The realization of a stable lithium-metal free(LiMF)sulfur battery based on amorphous carbon anode and lithium sulfide(Li_(2)S)cathode is here *** particular,a biomass waste originating full-cell combining a carbonized brewer's spent grain(CBSG)biochar anode with a Li_(2)S-graphene composite cathode(Li_(2)S70Gr30)is *** design is particularly attractive for applying a cost-effective,high performance,environment friendly,and safe anode material,as an alternative to standard graphite and metallic lithium in emerging battery *** anodic and cathodic materials are characterized in terms of structure,morphology and composition through X-ray diffraction,scanning and transmission electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron and Raman ***,an electrochemical characterization comprising galvanostatic cycling,rate capability and cyclic voltammetry tests were carried out both in half-cell and full-cell *** systematic investigation reveals that unlike graphite,the biochar electrode displays good compatibility with the electrolyte typically employed in sulfur *** CBSG/Li_(2)S70Gr30 full-cell demonstrates an initial charge and discharge capacities of 726 and 537 mAh g^(-1),respectively,at 0.05C with a coulombic efficiency of 74%.Moreover,it discloses a reversible capacity of 330 mAh g^(-1)(0.1 C)after over 300 *** on these achievements,the CBSG/Li_(2)S70Gr30 battery system can be considered as a promising energy storage solution for electric vehicles(EVs),especially when taking into account its easy scalability to an industrial level.

Online risk‑based portfolio allocation on subsets of crypto assets applying a prototype‑based clustering algorithm

Mean-variance portfolio optimization models are sensitive to uncertainty in risk-return estimates,which may result in poor out-of-sample *** particular,the estimates may suffer when the number of assets considered is high and the length of the return time series is not sufficiently *** is precisely the case in the cryptocur-rency market,where there are hundreds of crypto assets that have been traded for a few *** propose enhancing the mean-variance(MV)model with a pre-selection stage that uses a prototype-based clustering algorithm to reduce the number of crypto assets considered at each investment *** the pre-selection stage,we run a prototype-based clustering algorithm where the assets are described by variables representing the profit-risk *** prototypes of the clustering partition are auto-matically examined and the one that best suits our risk-aversion preference is *** then run the MV portfolio optimization with the crypto assets of the selected *** proposed approach is tested for a period of 17 months in the whole cryp-tocurrency market and two selections of the cryptocurrencies with the higher market capitalization(175 and 250 cryptos).We compare the results against three methods applied to the whole market:classic MV,risk parity,and hierarchical risk parity *** also compare our results with those from investing in the market index *** simulation results generally favor our proposal in terms of profit and risk-profit financial *** result reaffirms the convenience of using machine learning methods to guide financial investments in complex and highly-volatile environments such as the cryptocurrency market.

History and biology of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC): MSCs were firstly described around 1970s by Friedenstein and his collaborators as a subpopulation of colony forming, clonogenic, plastic adherent stromal bone marrow derived cells, with the capacity to regenerate other tissues (Murphy et al., 2013). caplan (1991) proposed that these mesenchymal cells were “stem” because of their ability to differentiate to any lineage of mesodermal cells. The richest sources of MSCs are bone marrow and adipose tissue, but they can also be isolated from synovial fluid, periosteum, fetal organs, placenta, umbilical cord blood and amniotic fluid (Murphy et al., 2013;Sherman et al., 2015).

Improved Peptidyl Linkers for Self-Assembly of Semiconductor Quantum Dot Bioconjugates

We demonstrate improved peptide linkers which allow both conjugation to biomolecules such as DNA and self-assembly with luminescent semiconductor quantum dots.A hexahistidine peptidyl sequence was generated by standard solid phase peptide synthesis and modified with the succinimidyl ester of iodoacetamide to yield a thiol-reactive iodoacetyl polyhistidine *** reactive peptide was conjugated to dye-labeled thiolated DNA which was utilized as a model target *** gel electrophoresis and fluorescence resonance energy transfer analysis confirmed that the linker allowed the DNA to self-assemble with quantum dots via metal-affinity driven *** contrast to previous peptidyl linkers that were based on disulfide exchange and were thus labile to reduction,the reactive haloacetyl chemistry demonstrated here results in a more stable thioether bond linking the DNA to the peptide which can withstand strongly reducing environments such as the intracellular *** thiol groups occur naturally in proteins,can be engineered into cloned proteins,inserted into nascent peptides or added to DNA during synthesis,the chemistry demonstrated here can provide a simple method for self-assembling a variety of stable quantum dot bioconjugates.

The effect of chemical structure of carboxylate molecules on hydroxyapatite nanoparticles.A structural and morphological study

Being the most abundant non-macromolecular organic component of bone,the role of citrate(Cit)in hydroxyapatite(HA)crystallization is of high *** this work we have investigated the influence of hydroxycitrate(CitOH)and glutarate(Glr)on HA crystallization in terms of particle growth,composition,and morphology in comparison to *** and Glr have been selected for this work because they share the same backbone structure of Cit but bear different functional groups in the central *** data has revealed that CitOH strongly inhibits HA crystallization more efficiently than ***-HA nanoparticles are composed of platy,elongated particles similar to those of Cit-HA but they are *** smaller and have a lower crystal *** the other hand,Glr does not inhibit HA crystallization as Cit,but leads to the formation of OCP platelets that convert with maturation time to HA nanorods with larger aspect ratio than *** comparison to Cit-HA samples,Glr-HA nanoparticles have bigger dimensions,and higher structural ***,our data reveal that the central carboxyl group of Cit is involved in the selective binding with HA crystal surface and in regulating HA crystal *** results of this work highlight new possibilities to control the formation of HA for designing advanced bioactive materials and give new insights on the role of the structure of Cit in regulating the HA morphology.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease connections with fat-free tissues: A focus on bone and skeletal muscle

The estimates of global incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) are worrisome, due to the parallel burden of obesity and its metabolic complications. Indeed, excess adiposity and insulin resistance represent two of the major risk factors for NAFLD; interestingly, in the last years a growing body of evidence tended to support a novel mechanistic perspective, in which the liver is at the center of a complex interplay involving organs and systems, other than adipose tissue and glucose homeostasis. bone and the skeletal muscle are fat- free tissues which appeared to be independently associated with NAFLD in several cross-sectional studies. The deterioration of bone mineral density and lean body mass, leading to osteoporosis and sarcopenia, respectively, are age-related processes. The prevalence of NAFLD also increases with age. Beyond physiological aging, the three conditions share some common underlying mechanisms, and their elucidations could be of paramount importance to design more effective treatment strategies for the management of NAFLD. In this review, we provide an overview on epidemiological data as well as on potential contributors to the connections of NAFLD with bone and skeletal muscle.

Polyetheretherketone and titanium surface treatments to modify roughness and wettability–Improvement of bioactivity and antibacterial properties

The investigated mantle bodies from the External Ligurians(Groppo di Gorro and ***)show evidences of a complex evolution determined by an early high temperature metasomatism,due to percolating melts of asthenospheric origin,and a later metasomatism at relatively high temperature by hydrothermal fluids,with formation of *** Groppo di Gorro,the serpentinization and chloritization processes obliterated totally the pyroxenite protolith,whereas at *** relics of peridotite and pyroxenite protoliths were preserved from *** rodingite parageneses consist of diopside+vesuvianite+garnet+calcite+chlorite at Groppo di Gorro and garnet+diopside+serpentine±vesuvianite±prehnite±chlorite±pumpellyite at *** inclusion measurements show that rodingitization occurred at relatively high temperatures(264-334℃ at 500 bar and 300-380℃ at 1 kbar).Garnet,the first phase of rodingite to form,consists of abundant hydrogarnet component at Groppo di Gorro,whereas it is mainly composed of grossular and andradite at *** last stage of rodingitization is characterized by the vesuvianite *** nucleation requires high ca and low silica fluids,whereas the formation of vesuvianite does not need CO2-poor *** formation of calcite at Groppo di Gorro points to mildly oxidizing conditions compatible with hydrothermal fluids;the presence of andradite associated with serpentine and magnetite at *** suggests Fe^3+-bearing fluids with fO2 slightly higher than iron-magnetite *** propose that the formation of the studied rodingite could be related to different pulses of hydrothermal fluids mainly occurring in an oceancontinent transitional setting and,locally,in an accretionary prism associated with intra-oceanic subduction.

Electro-acupuncture to prevent prolonged postoperative ileus:A randomized clinical trial

AIM:To examine whether acupuncture can prevent prolonged postoperative ileus(PPOI)after intraperitoneal surgery for colon cancer. METHODS:Ninety patients were recruited from the Fudan University cancer Hospital,Shanghai,China. After surgery,patients were randomized to receive acupuncture(once daily,starting on postoperative day 1, for up to six consecutive days)or usual *** was defined as an inability to pass flatus or have a bowel movement by 96 h after *** main outcomes were time to first flatus,time to first bowel movement, and *** outcomes were quality of life(QOL)measures,including pain, nausea,insomnia,abdominal distension/fullness,and sense of well-being. RESULTS:No significant differences in PPOI on day 4 (P=0.71)or QOL measures were found between the *** were also no group differences when the data were analyzed by examining those whose PPOI had resolved by day 5(P=0.69)or day 6(P= 0.88).No adverse events related to acupuncture were reported. CONCLUSION:Acupuncture did not prevent PPOI andwas not useful for treating PPOI once it had developed in this population.
