Oxytocin in pig seminal plasma is positively related with in vivo fertility of inseminated sows

Background:Identification of relevant in vivo biomarkers for fertility remains a challenge for the livestock *** of the small peptide hormone oxytocin(OXT),involved in male reproductive function and present in the seminal plasma(SP)of several species could be a robust *** study characterized concentrations of SPOXT in ejaculates from boars used in artificial insemination(AI)programs aiming to evaluate its relationship with sperm quality variables and in vivo fertility of their liquid-stored *** OXT concentrations(ng/mL)were measured in 169 ejaculates from 61 boars of the Duroc,Pietrain,Landrace and Large White breeds using a direct competitive immunoassay test based on AlphaLISA®***(ejaculate volume,sperm concentration,total sperm count)and sperm parameters(motility,viability,intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species,plasma membrane fluidity)were assessed at 0 h and 72 h in AI-semen samples stored at 17℃.In vivo fertility included only 18 Large White and Landrace boars whose AI-semen was used to inseminated>100 sows and evaluated both farrowing rate and litter size of 3,167 ***:The results showed that SP-OXT differed between boars and between ejaculates within boar(P<0.05)but not between breeds(Duroc,Pietrain,Landrace and Large White).Ejaculates with higher SP-OXT concentration/mL(hierarchically grouped;P<0.001)had larger volume and came from younger boars(P<0.05).Ejaculates of boars showing positive farrowing rate deviation exhibited higher(P<0.05)SP-OXT concentration/mL than those with negative farrowing rate ***:The SP concentrations of OXT are boar,ejaculate and age dependent,and positively related with ejaculate volume and farrowing rates of liquid-stored semen AI-doses.

Effect of psychological stress on gastric motility assessed by electrical bio-impedance

AIM:To evaluate gastric motility using electrical bioimpedance(EBI) and gastric changes as a result of stress induced by psychological ***:A group of 57 healthy women,aged 40-60 years,was recruited,and a clinical history and physical examination were *** women were free from severe anxiety,chronic or acute stress,severe depression,mental diseases and conditions that affect gastric *** women were evaluated under fasting conditions,and using a four-electrode configuration,the gastric signals were obtained through a BIOPAC MP-150 *** volunteers were evaluated using the following paradigm:basal state,recording during the Stroop Test,intermediate resting period,recording during the Raven Test,and a final resting *** analyzed the relative areas of the frequency spectrum:A1(1-2 cpm),A2(2-4 cpm),A3(4-8 cpm),and A4(8-12 cpm),as well as the median of area A2 + *** data were analyzed by an autoregressive method using a Butterworth filter with MatLab and *** of variance(ANOVA) and Friedman ANOVA(for nonparametric variables) were performed;in addition,pairs of groups were compared using the T dependent and Wilcoxon T ***:The results of the main values of area A2 were not significantly different comparing the five steps of the experimental ***,there was a tendency of this A2 region to decrease during the stress tests,with recuperation at the final resting *** an extended gastric region was considered(1-4 cpm),significant differences with the psychological stress tests were present(F = 3.85,P = 0.005).The A3 region also showed significant changes when the stress psychological tests were administered(F = 7.25,P < 0.001).These differences were influenced by the changes in the adjacent gastric region of *** parameter that we proposed in previous studies for the evaluation of gastric motility by electrical bio-impedance(EBI) was the median of the area under the region from 2 to 8 cpm(A2 + A3)

The implementation of numerical methods to solve and study equations for cardiac wave propagation in realistic geometries is very costly,in terms of computational *** aim of this work is to show the improvement that can be obtained with Chebyshev polynomials-based methods over the classical finite difference schemes to obtain numerical solutions of cardiac *** this end,we present a Chebyshev multidomain(CMD)Pseudospectral method to solve a simple two variable cardiac models on threedimensional anisotropic media and we show the usefulness of the method over the traditional finite differences scheme widely used in the literature.

Therapies such as direct tension-free microsurgical repair or transplantation of a nerve autograft,are nowadays used to treat traumatic peripheral nerve injuries（PNI）,focused on the enhancement of the intrinsic regenerative potential of injured ***,these therapies fail to recreate the suitable cellular and molecular microenvironment of peripheral nerve repair and in some cases,the functional recovery of nerve injuries is ***,new biomedical engineering strategies based on tissue engineering approaches through molecular intervention and scaffolding offer promising outcomes on the *** this sense,evidence is accumulating in both,preclinical and clinical settings,indicating that platelet-rich plasma products,and fibrin scaffold obtained from this technology,hold an important therapeutic potential as a neuroprotective,neurogenic and neuroinflammatory therapeutic modulator system,as well as enhancing the sensory and motor functional nerve muscle unit recovery.

Optimization of nitrogen fertilizer rate under integrated rice management in a hilly area of Southwest China

China has the world’s highest nitrogen(N)application rate,and the lowest N use efficiency(NUE).With the crop yield increasing,serious N pollution is also *** in-situ field experiment(2011–2015)was conducted to examine the effects of three N levels,0(i.e.,no fertilizer N addition to soil),120,and 180 kg N ha-1,using integrated rice management(IRM).We investigated rice yield,aboveground N uptake,and soil surface N budget in a hilly region of Southwest *** to traditional rice management(TRM),IRM integrated raised beds,plastic mulch,furrow irrigation,and triangular transplanting,which significantly improved rice grain yield,straw biomass,aboveground N uptake,and *** rice management significantly improved 15N recovery efficiency(by 10%)and significantly reduced the ratio of potential15N loss(by 8%–12%).Among all treatments,the 120 kg N ha-1 level under IRM achieved the highest 15N recovery efficiency(32%)and 15N residual efficiency(29%),with the lowest 15N loss ratio(39%).After rice harvest,the residual N fertilizer did not achieve a full replenishment of soil N consumption,as the replenishing effect was insufficient(ranging from-31 to-49 kg N ha-1).Furthermore,soil surface N budget showed a surplus(69–146 kg N ha-1)under all treatments,and the N surplus was lower under IRM than *** results indicate IRM as a reliable and stable method for high rice yield and high NUE,while exerting a minor risk of N *** the hilly area of Southwest China,the optimized N fertilizer application rate under IRM was found to be 100–150 kg N ha-1.

Human UDP-glycosyltransferases(UGTs)are responsible for the glycosylation of a wide variety of endogenous substrates and commonly prescribed *** genetic polymorphisms in UGT genes are implicated in interindividual differences in drug response and cancer ***,the genetic complexity beyond these variants has not been comprehensively *** here leveraged wholeexome and whole-genome sequencing data from 141,456 unrelated individuals across 7 major human populations to provide a comprehensive profile of genetic variability across the human UGT gene ***,9666 exonic variants were observed,of which 98.9%were *** interpret the functional impact of UGT missense variants,we developed a gene family-specific variant effect *** algorithm identified a total of 1208 deleterious variants,most of which were found in African and South Asian *** analysis corroborated the predicted effects for multiple variations in substrate binding ***,our analyses provide a systematic overview of UGT variability,which can yield insights into interindividual differences in phase 2 metabolism and facilitate the translation of sequencing data into personalized predictions of UGT substrate disposition.

Grouping tree species to estimate basal area increment in temperate multispecies forests in Durango,Mexico

Multispecies forests have received increased scientific attention,driven by the hypothesis that biodiversity improves ecological ***,a greater species diversity presents challenges for forest management and *** study aims to develop basal area growth models for tree species *** analysis is based on a dataset of 423 permanent plots(2,500 m^(2))located in temperate forests in Durango,***,we define tree species cohorts based on individual and neighborhood-based variables using a combination of principal component and cluster ***,we estimate the basal area increment of each cohort through the generalized additive model to describe the effect of tree size,competition,stand density and site *** principal component and cluster analyses assign a total of 37 tree species to eight cohorts that differed primarily with regard to the distribution of tree size and vertical position within the *** generalized additive models provide satisfactory estimates of tree growth for the species cohorts,explaining between 19 and 53 percent of the total variation of basal area increment,and highlight the following results:i)most cohorts show a"rise-and-fall"effect of tree size on tree growth;ii)surprisingly,the competition index"basal area of larger trees"had showed a positive effect in four of the eight cohorts;iii)stand density had a negative effect on basal area increment,though the effect was minor in medium-and high-density stands,and iv)basal area growth was positively correlated with site quality except for an oak *** developed species cohorts and growth models provide insight into their particular ecological features and growth patterns that may support the development of sustainable management strategies for temperate multispecies forests.

Use of geochemical fingerprints to trace sediment sources in an agricultural catchment of Argentina
