Convective drying of yellow discarded onion (Angaco INTA): Modelling of moisture loss kinetics and effect on phenolic compounds

The Angaco INTA onion variety is the most cultivated and its production,mostly is destined for export.Due to their high-quality standards of these markets,many onions are discarded.The drying process seems to be a promising solution that not only give added value to this product,but also extend shelf life.In this work,the influence of convective drying process,at 60 and 70C,on the kinetic behavior,antioxidant activity,phenolic and flavonoid contents of discarded onion slices were investigated.Considering that,the Angaco INTA onion is a variety genetically developed to have shorter cultivation times in this region;the phenolic compounds content in this onion variety,the drying kinetics and its influence on this content have never been studied.In this study,the phenolic compounds contributions to dehydrated product quality was evaluated,observing that the convective drying increased the total soluble phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant properties for both temperatures,being highest at 70C.The rehydration ratios were similar to the slices dried at 60 and 70C.Several models were used for describing the obtained drying curve equation of onion slices,being the Midilli’s model the one that presented the best fit.Ficks’s model of water diffusion fitted all experimental data with acceptable correlation coefficients.Considering the achieved findings,70C is the optimum temperature to produce the dehydrated Angaco INTA onion.

Effect of psychological stress on gastric motility assessed by electrical bio-impedance

AIM:To evaluate gastric motility using electrical bioimpedance(EBI) and gastric changes as a result of stress induced by psychological tests.METHODS:A group of 57 healthy women,aged 40-60 years,was recruited,and a clinical history and physical examination were performed.The women were free from severe anxiety,chronic or acute stress,severe depression,mental diseases and conditions that affect gastric activity.The women were evaluated under fasting conditions,and using a four-electrode configuration,the gastric signals were obtained through a BIOPAC MP-150 system.The volunteers were evaluated using the following paradigm:basal state,recording during the Stroop Test,intermediate resting period,recording during the Raven Test,and a final resting period.We analyzed the relative areas of the frequency spectrum:A1(1-2 cpm),A2(2-4 cpm),A3(4-8 cpm),and A4(8-12 cpm),as well as the median of area A2 + A3.The data were analyzed by an autoregressive method using a Butterworth filter with MatLab and Origin.Analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Friedman ANOVA(for nonparametric variables) were performed;in addition,pairs of groups were compared using the T dependent and Wilcoxon T tests.RESULTS:The results of the main values of area A2 were not significantly different comparing the five steps of the experimental paradigm.Nevertheless,there was a tendency of this A2 region to decrease during the stress tests,with recuperation at the final resting step.When an extended gastric region was considered(1-4 cpm),significant differences with the psychological stress tests were present(F = 3.85,P = 0.005).The A3 region also showed significant changes when the stress psychological tests were administered(F = 7.25,P < 0.001).These differences were influenced by the changes in the adjacent gastric region of A2.The parameter that we proposed in previous studies for the evaluation of gastric motility by electrical bio-impedance(EBI) was the median of the area under the region from 2 to 8 cpm(A2 + A3).The mean values of these frequencies(median of

Focal depths and mechanisms of Tohoku-Oki aftershocks from teleseismic P wave modeling

Aftershocks of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki great earthquake have a wide range of focal depths and fault plane mechanisms. We constrain the focal depths and focal mechanisms of 69 aftershocks with Mw 〉 5.4 by modeling the waveforms of teleseismic P and its trailing near-surface reflections pP and sP. We find that the ＂thrust events＂ are within 10 krn from the plate interface. The dip angles of these thrust events increase with depth from ~ 5~ to ~ 25~. The ＂non-thrust events＂ vary from 60 km above to 40 km below the plate interface. Normal and strike-slip events within the overriding plate point to redistribution of stress following the primary great earthquake; however, due to the spatially variable stress change in the Tohoku-Oki earthquake, an understanding of how the mainshock affected the stresses that led to the aftershocks requires accurate knowledge of the aftershock location.
