Semiconductor devices are strong competitors in the race for the development of quantum computational systems.In this work,we interface two semiconductor building blocks of different dimensionalities with complementary properties:(1)a quantum dot hosting a single exciton and acting as a nearly ideal single-photon emitter and(2)a quantum well in a 2D microcavity sustaining polaritons,which are known for their strong interactions and unique hydrodynamic properties,including ultrafast real-time monitoring of their propagation and phase mapping.In the present experiment,we can thus observe how the injected single particles propagate and evolve inside the microcavity,giving rise to hydrodynamic features typical of macroscopic systems despite their genuine intrinsic quantum nature.In the presence of a structural defect,we observe the celebrated quantum interference of a single particle that produces fringes reminiscent of wave propagation.While this behavior could be theoretically expected,our imaging of such an interference pattern,together with a measurement of antibunching,constitutes the first demonstration of spatial mapping of the self-interference of a single quantum particle impinging on an obstacle.

A trilobite biostratigraphic study of a new section of the Kaili Formation at Jianshan,Chuandong Village,Jianhe County, Guizhou is reported.Additional occurrences of key species associated with the Ovatoryctocara granulata-Bathynotus holopygus Zone and the overlying Oryctocephalus indicus Zone that were originally defined from the trilobite assemblages at the Wuliu- Zengjiayan section of the Kaili are reported from this new section.The first appearance datum (FAD) of Oryctocephalus indicus occurs at the 44.52 m above the base of the unit.Based on study of abundant specimens (n=800) from the Kaili Formation, we argue that Oryctocephalus indicus is a widespread taxon with a global distribution.O.reticulatus (Lermontova,1940) from the middle part of the Kounamkites Zone of the Amganian Stage in the Molodo River region of Siberia and O.americanus (Sundberg and McCollum,2003) from nevada,north America are similar to representatives of O.indicus which occur in the O.indicus Zone of the Kaili Formation.O.reticulatus and O.americanus are here synonymized with O.indicus (Reed,1910).This study strengthens the Wuliu-Zengjiayan section of the Kaili Formation as a candidate section for a Global Stratotype for the base of the unnamed Cambrian Series 3.

The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point （GSSP） of the Drumian Stage （Cambrian） in the Drum Mountains, Utah, USA

The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point GSSP) for the base of the Drumian Stage (Cambrian Series 3) is defined at the base of a limestone (calcisiltite) layer 62 m above the base of the Wheeler Formation in the Stratotype Ridge section, Drum Mountains, Utah, USA. The GSSP level contains the lowest occurrence of the cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Ptychagnostus atavus (base of the P. atavus Zone). Secondary global markers near the base of the stage include the DICE negative δ13C excursion, the onset of a long monotonic 87Sr/86Sr isotopic shift, and the transgressive phase of a eustatic event. Faunal turnovers close to the base of the Drumian Stage are recognized as the base of the Bolaspidella Zone (polymerid trilobites) in Laurentia, the historic base of the Floran Stage in Australia, the base of the Dorypyge richthofeni Zone (polymerid trilobites) in South China, and the base of the Gapparodus bisulcatus-Westergaardodina brevidens Assemblage-zone (conodonts) in Baltica and South China. The last occurrence of the cosmopolitan trilobite Ptychagnostus gibbus occurs in the lower part of the Drumian Stage, and the base of the Hydrocephalus hicksii Zone (polymerid trilobites) as used in Siberia and Baltica occurs near the base of the stage.

Pancreatic enzymes and abdominal adipose tissue distribution in new-onset prediabetes/diabetes after acute pancreatitis

BACKGROUnD new-onset prediabetes/diabetes after acute pancreatitis(nODAP)is the most common sequela of pancreatitis,and it differs from type 2 prediabetes/diabetes mellitus(T2DM).AIM To study the associations between circulating levels of pancreatic amylase,pancreatic lipase,chymotrypsin and fat phenotypes in nODAP,T2DM,and health.METHODS Individuals with nODAP(n=30),T2DM(n=30),and sex-matched healthy individuals(n=30)were included.Five fat phenotypes(intra-pancreatic fat,liver fat,skeletal muscle fat,visceral fat,and subcutaneous fat)were determined using the same magnetic resonance imaging protocol and scanner magnet strength for all participants.One-way analysis of covariance,linear regression analysis,and relative importance analysis were conducted.RESULTS Intra-pancreatic fat deposition(IPFD)was higher in nODAP(9.4%±1.8%)and T2DM(9.8%±1.1%)compared with healthy controls(7.8%±1.9%)after adjusting for covariates(P=0.003).Similar findings were observed in regards to visceral fat volume(P=0.005),but not subcutaneous fat volume,liver fat,or skeletal muscle fat.Both IPFD(β=-2.201,P=0.023)and visceral fat volume(β=-0.004,P=0.028)were significantly associated with circulating levels of pancreatic amylase in nODAP,but not in T2DM or healthy individuals.Of the five fat phenotypes,IPFD explained the highest amount of variance in pancreatic amylase concentration(R2=15.3%out of 41.2%).none of the phenotypes contributed meaningfully to the variance in pancreatic lipase or chymotrypsin.COnCLUSIOn Both nODAP and T2DM are characterized by increased IPFD and visceral fat volume.However,only nODAP is characterized by significant inverse associations between the two fat phenotypes and pancreatic amylase.

Survival in unresectable sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma treated with concurrent intra-arterial cisplatin and radiation

We report the successful use of RADPLAT to treat a patient with an unresectable T4n0 sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. This patient received 4 cycles of weekly intra-arterial cisplatin together with thiosulfate infusion with concurrent radiation therapy. Radiation therapy was given in 28 daily fractions to 54 Gy using intensity-modulated radiation therapy followed by a hypofractionated stereotactic boost of 3 fractions to 13 Gy to a total dose of 67 Gy in 31 fractions to the nasal sinus and bilateral neck. Intra-arterial cisplatin was administered using a bilateral approach due to the midline site of this tumor. Within days of the first intra-arterial cisplatin, there was an obvious decrease in tumor size. She has been followed with magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, and remains disease-free 47 mo post-treatment. Centers with expertise in intra-arterial chemotherapy could consider the RADPLAT approach for patients with unresectable sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

Effects of Land Use on Greenhouse Gas Flux in Playa Wetlands and Associated Watersheds in the High Plains, USA

In the High Plains, U.S., native prairie conversion to cropland agriculture has resulted in a loss of service delivery capabilities from most depressional wetlands as a result of sedimentation. Restoring historic hydrological conditions to affected wetlands may rejuvenate some services, however, there may be tradeoffs due to emissions of CH4 and n2O. We evaluated the influence of two predominant conservation programs (Wetlands Reserve Program, WRP and Conservation Reserve Program, CRP) on gas emissions (CO2, CH4, n2O) from 42 playas and uplands in the High Plains of nebraska. Because playa restoration through the WRP is most prevalent in the Rainwater Basin (RWB), we studied 27 playas/uplands among reference condition, cropland, and WRP land uses. We studied 15 playas/uplands within native grassland, cropland, and CRP land uses in the Western High Plains (WHP) of nebraska. Emissions were collected bi-weekly from April-October of 2012 and 2013 from four landscape positions extending outward from the wetland center into upland. In RWB playas, CH4 and n2O emissions were similar among land uses but CO2 was 28% higher in cropland than WRP wetlands. Cropland uplands emitted 648% more n2O than reference and WRP uplands. Overall, net CO2-equiv emissions were lower in playas/uplands in WRP, suggesting that benefits of playa restoration may include climate mitigation services as well as increased water storage capacity and biodiversity provisioning. In the WHP, cropland and grassland playas emitted 46 and 23 times more CH4, respectively, than CRP in 2013. Playas in CRP emitted 43% less n2O than cropland playas. In 2013, net emissions for cropland and native grassland playas were 75% and 39% greater, respectively, than CRP playas. In the WHP, the benefits of lower gas emissions must be appropriately weighted against tradeoffs of ecosystem services related to shorter hydroperiods as a result of reduced runoff into playas in CRP.

Over the past 70 years,the world has witnessed extraordinary growth in crop productivity,enabled by a suite of technological advances,including higher yielding crop varieties,improved farm management,synthetic agrochemicals,and agricultural mechanization.While this"Green Revolution"intensified crop production,and is credited with reducing famine and malnutrition,its benefits were accompanied by several undesirable collateral effects(Pingali,2012).These include a narrowing of agricultural biodiversity,stemming from increased monoculture and greater reliance on a smaller number of crops and crop varieties for the majority of our calories.This reduction in diversity has created vulnerabilities to pest and disease epidemics,climate variation,and ultimately to human health(Harlan,1972).
