Polarization conversion and beam scanning metasurfaces are commonly used to reduce polarization mismatch and direct electromagnetic waves in a specific direction to improve the strength of a wireless ***,identifying suitable active and mechanically reconfigurable metasurfaces for polarization conversion and beam scanning is a considerable challenge,and the reported metasurfaces have narrow scanning ranges,are expensive,and cannot be independently *** this paper,we propose a reconfigurable transmissive metasurface combined with a scissor and rotation actuator for independently controlling beam scanning and polarization conversion *** metasurface is constructed with rotatable unit cells(UCs)that can switch the polarization state between right-handed(RHCP)and left-handed circular polarization(LHCP)by flipping the UCs to reverse their phase ***,independent beam scanning is achieved using the scissor actuator to linearly change the distance between the *** and experimental results confirm that the proposed metasurface can perform beam scanning in the range of 28°for both the positive and negative regions of a radiation pattern(RHCP and LHCP beams)at an operational frequency of 10.5 GHz.

Nullbasic is a mutant form of HIV-1 Tat that has strong ability to protect cells from HIV-1 replication by inhibiting three different steps of viral replication: reverse transcription, Rev export of viral m RNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and transcription of viral m RNA by RNA polymerase II. We previously showed that Nullbasic inhibits transduction of human cells including T cells by HIV-1-based lentiviral vectors. Here we investigated whether the Nullbasic antagonists huTat2(a Tat targeting intrabody), HIV-1 Tat or Rev proteins or cellular DDX1 protein could improve transduction by a HIV-1 lentiviral vector conveying Nullbasic-Zs Green1 to human T cells. We show that overexpression of huTat2, Tat-FLAG and DDX1-HA in virus-like particle(VLP) producer cells significantly improved transduction efficiency of VLPs that convey Nullbasic in Jurkat cells. Specifically, co-expression of Tat-FLAG and DDX1-HA in the VLP producer cell improved transduction efficiency better than if used individually. Transduction efficiencies could be further improved by including a spinoculation step. However, the same optimised protocol and using the same VLPs failed to transduce primary human CD4^+T cells. The results imply that the effects of Nullbasic on VLPs on early HIV-1 replication are robust in human CD4^+T cells. Given this significant block to lentiviral vector transduction by Nullbasic in primary CD4^+T cells, our data indicate that gammaretroviral, but not lentiviral, vectors are suitable for delivering Nullbasic to primary human T cells.

Tumor invasion and metastasis is a highly complicated, multi-step phenomenon. In the complex event of tumor progression, tumor cells interact with basement membrane and extracellular matrix components. Proteolytic enzymes(proteinases) are involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix, but also in cancer invasion and metastasis. The four categories of proteinases(cysteine-, serine-, aspartic-, and metalloproteinases) are named and classified according to the essential catalytic component in their active site. We and others have shown that proteolytic enzymes play a major role not only in colorectal cancer(CRC) invasion and metastasis, but also in malignant transformation of precancerous lesions into cancer. Tissue and serumplasma antigen concentrations of proteinases might be of great value in identifying patients with poor prognosis in CRC. Our results, in concordance with othersindicate the potential tumor marker impact of proteinases for the early diagnosis of CRC. In addition, proteinases may also serve as potential target molecules for therapeutic agents.

Retinoblastoma as an Epigenetic Disease: A Proposal

The aim of the present review is to give new insights into the pathogenesis of retinoblastoma, by applying the principles of Epigenetics to the analysis of clinical, epidemiological, and biological data concerning the disease. As an emerging new scientific approach linking the genome to the environment, Epigenetics, as applied to the interpretation of clinical, epidemiological and biological data in retinoblastoma, can not only explain the inconsistencies of the mutational (“two hit”) model, but also open new outstanding scenarios in the fields of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this eye tumour. This review is both a collection of literature data arguing against the role of the mutational (“two hit”) model in the genesis of retinoblastoma, and a documented evaluation of how the Epigenetic, rather than the genetic model fit the variegated phenotypic expression of the disease. The epigenetic model in the genesis of retinoblastoma, proposed herein, emphasizes the role of environment and the interaction of the environment with the genome, in generating reti-noblastoma in young children. Environmental toxicants, including radiations, wrong diets, and infectious diseases, among others, all play a major role in conditioning the degree of DNA methylation in embryos and foetuses during pregnancy, thus leading to stable, functional alterations of the genome, which, on the other hand, can be also transmit-ted from generation to generation, thus mimicking a hereditary disease. An accurate analysis of the currently available literature on both retinoblastoma and Epigenetics, coupled with the knowledge of the variegated phenotypic expression of the disease, can easily lead to the conclusion that retinoblastoma is an epigenetic, rather than a genetic disease.

The identification of dyes is important in research on museum artefacts as well as in forensic applications. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy cannot unambiguously distinguish dyes with similar hues, while mass spectrometry may fail to distinguish isobaric dyes. The detailed patterns produced by 3D fluorescence spectroscopy appear to be virtually unique, even among dyes that are closely related positional isomers. We report these patterns for 65 dyes from the Schweppe Library of Synthetic Organic Dyes as well as measurements suggesting both the capabilities and limitations of this method.

A mathematical optimal-control tumor therapy framework consisting of radio- and anti-angiogenesis control strategies that are included in a tumor growth model is investigated. The governing system, resulting from the combination of two well established models, represents the differential constraint of a non-smooth optimal control problem that aims at reducing the volume of the tumor while keeping the radio- and anti-angiogenesis chemical dosage to a minimum. Existence of optimal solutions is proved and necessary conditions are formulated in terms of the Pontryagin maximum principle. Based on this principle, a so-called sequential quadratic Hamiltonian (SQH) method is discussed and benchmarked with an “interior point optimizer—a mathematical programming language” (IPOPT-AMPL) algorithm. Results of numerical experiments are presented that successfully validate the SQH solution scheme. Further, it is shown how to choose the optimisation weights in order to obtain treatment functions that successfully reduce the tumor volume to zero.

Purpose:To assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of coronoid process fractures surgically managed with buttress plate fixation via a medial ***:A retrospective review of all coronoid fractures surgically fixed in our institution using a buttress plate technique via a medial approach between June 2012 and April 2015 by the senior author was *** fractures were all sizeable fractures contributing to persistent elbow instability in terrible triad or varus posteromedial rotatory instability injury patterns.A prospective telephone questionnaire was conducted to assess patient outcomes using the disabilities of the arm,shoulder and hand(DASH)score and Mayo hlbow performance score(MEPS).Results:Twelve patients were included in the study,comprising 10 males and 2 females with an average age of 39 years(range,19-72 years).Mean follow-up was 16 months(range.4-18 months).The average time to radiographic union was 4 months(range.3-7 months).Range of motion measurements at final follow-up were obtained in 11 out of 12 patients,with one patient defaulting *** 11 patients displayed a functional elbow range of motion of at least 30°-130°.with an average arc of motion of 130°(range.110°-140°).mean elbow flexion of 134°(range.110°-140°)and mean flexion contracture of 3°(range.0°-20°).The mean DASH score was 16(range.2.5-43.8)and the mean MEPS was 75(range.65-100).Complications observed included one patient with a superfic ial wound infection which resolved with a course of oral antibiotics and one patient with radiographic evidence of heterotopic ossification which was conservatively *** residual elbow instability was observed and no reoperations were ***:Buttress plate fixation via a medial approach of coronoid process fractures that contribute to persistent elbow instability represents a reliable method of treatment that produces satisfactory and predictable outcomes.
