Factors Associated to the Presence of Pneumothorax in Cystic Fibrosis Patients in the City of madrid

Background: To identify risk factors associated with pneumothorax and to determine the prognosis of cystic fibrosis patients following an episode of pneumothorax in the city of madrid. methods: Records of 17 patients (10 males;age 24.4 ± 17.5 years) and 32 controls, and a total of 44 pneumothorax episodes were studied. We have analyzed the characteristics of the pneumothorax, the microbiology, the lung function tests (LFT) and the prognosis of patients. Two controls with cystic fibrosis and without pneumothorax matched for sex and age were selected. Results: Eight male and three female patients with pneumothorax were older than 18 years. The mean age of the first pneumothorax episode was 18.3 years (±9.6). The group with pneumothorax had a mean body mass index of 19.2(±2.42 kg/m2) and in the control group it was 26.5 (±1.98 kg/m2). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was present in fourteen patients (82%) with pneumothorax and in eleven patients (34.4%) in the control group (p = 0.002). Pneumothorax predominantly occurred in the coldest seasons. There was a significant drop in both forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) after the pneumothorax. In the same way, FEV1 and FVC were greater in the control group. Six patients (35.4%) with pneumothorax and two patients in the control group have died (p nclusions: Patients with pneumothorax are more likely to have P. aeruginosa colonization. LFT drop after an episode of pneumohorax. Patients with pneumothorax have worse LFT than patients without pneumothorax. mortality is greater in patients with pneumothorax.

n-ary hyperstructures associated to the genotypes of F2-offspring

In this paper, we consider an application of hyperstructure theory in biological inher- itance in which we deal with n-ary hyperstructures associated to the genotypes of the second generation F2 for n ： 2, 3, 4. First, we define a hyperoperation × （mating） on F2 and prove that it is a cyclic Hv-semigroup under the defined hyperoperation. Then we define a ternary hyperstructure f associated to the genotypes of F2 and prove that （F2, f） is a ternary Hv-semigroup. Finally, we define a 4-ary hyperstructure g associated to the genotypes of F2 and prove that （F2, g） is a 4-ary Hv-semigroup.

Stand age structural dynamics of conifer, mixedwood, and hardwood stands in the boreal forest of central Canada

To study the effects of stand development and overstory composition on stand age structure, we sampled 32 stands representing conifer, mixedwood, and hardwood stand types, ranging in ages from 72 to 201 years on upland mesic sites in northwestern Ontario. We defined the stages of stand development as: stem exclusion/canopy transition, canopy transition, canopy transition/gap dynamics, and gap dynamics. Stand age structure of conifer stands changed from bimodal, bimodal, reverse-J, and bimodal, respectively, through the stages of stand development. mixedwood and hardwood stands revealed similar trends, with the exception of missing the canopy transition/gap dynamic stage in mixedwoods. Canopy transition/gap dynamic stage in hardwoods showed a weaker reverse-J distribution than their conifer counterparts. The results suggest that forest management activities such as partial and selection harvesting and seed-tree systems may diversify standard landscape-level age structures and benefit wildlife, hasten the onset of old-growth, and create desired stand age structures. We also recommend that the determination of old-growth using the following criteria in the boreal forest: 1) canopy breakdown of pioneering cohort is complete and stand is dominated by later successional tree species, and 2) stand age structure is bimodal, with dominating canopy trees that fall within a relatively narrow range of age and height classes and a significant amount of understory regeneration.

A vacuum nano-casting route to magnetite cores/mesoporous silica shell composites

Hollow mesoporous silica spheres with magnetite cores(HmSmC) have been fabricated by Vacuum nano-casting Route. The amount of magnetite cores and saturation magnetization value can be easily adjusted by changing the concentration of iron nitrate solution used in the synthesis procedure. Furthermore, the as-prepared HmSmCs still maintain narrow mesopore distribution, high surface area and large pore volume after the hollow cores of hollow mesoporous silica spheres were filled with magnetite particles. Specially, when the saturation magnetization value of as-prepared HmSmCs reaches 22.0 emu/g, the surface area and pore volume of corresponding HmSmCs are 149 m^2/g and 0.19 cm^3/g, respectively, and the pore size is 2.30 nm. The corresponding samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, n_2 sorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy and vibrating-sample magnetometer.

An Analytical Solution to neumann-Type mixed Boundary Poiseuille microfluidic Flow in Rectangular Channel Cross-Sections (Slip/no-Slip) including a numerical Technique to Derive It

In most microfluidic applications, pressure-driven Poiseuille flow in a contained cross-section with no-slip boundary conditions is the underlying fluid-mechanical model. Solutions for this problem exist for many known cross-sections. We have recently demonstrated a simple method to solve the relevant Poisson equation using a finite difference scheme in a spreadsheet analysis tool such as microsoft Excel. The numerical solutions obtained from such a spreadsheet are close-to-exact to the analytical solutions with errors on the order of only a few percent. However, there are numerous applications in microfluidics for which the no-slip boundary condition is not valid. Examples include drag-reducing air-retaining surfaces as well as open-channel flow. For these scenarios few to no analytical models exist. In this paper, we derive an analytical model for mixed boundary conditions (slip/no-slip) in two dimensions in a rectangular channel cross-section. We also demonstrate that the equivalent numerical solution can be derived conveniently by adaption of the spreadsheet. In general, mixed boundary-type flow scenarios are especially difficult to solve analytically whereas numerical solutions can be derived using microsoft Excel within seconds.

TnF<i>α</i>and IL1<i>β</i>Stimulate Differential Gene Expression in Endometrial Stromal Cells

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that specific macrophage-secreted cytokines cause gene expression changes in endometrial stromal cells that reproduce the effects of macro-phages in the development of endometriosis. Telomerase-immortalized human endometrial stromal cells (T-HESC) were treated with tumor necrosis factor α (TnFα, 5 ng/ml) and interleukin 1β (IL1β, 1 ng/ml). Differential expression of 249 genes was identified by DnA microarray. Ontologies such as peptidases, cell adhesion, cell death/cell cycle, growth factors, cytoskeletal organization, defense/immune system, signal transduction, and transcriptional regulation which are related to the development of endometriosis were represented by these genes. The up-regulation of interleukin 8 (IL8), interleukin 6 (IL6), IL1β and matrix metallopro-teinase 3 (mmP3) in response to TnFα ± ILIβ in T-HESC cells was confirmed by real time RT-PCR. TnFα ± ILIβ did not affect the migration or invasion of T-HESC cells. This study reinforces our previous investigations on communication between cells of the immune system and endometrial stromal cells and their potential role in the development of endometriosis.

Exacerbation of Soft Tissue Lesions in Lead Exposed Virus Infected mice

Objective To investigate the effect of Lead (Pb) acetate exposure on Semliki forest virus (SFV) pathogenesis in mice. methods Different doses (62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/Kg body weight) of Pb dissolved in normal saline were given to mice by oral intubation in a sub-acute (28 days) and sub-chronic (90 days) regimen followed by SFV infection. morbidity, mortality, clinical symptoms, mean survival time (mST), changes in body and organ weight, accumulation of lead in soft tissues, virus titre in brain and histopathological alterations were compared between lead exposed and infected groups. Results Early appearance of virus symptoms, increased mortality, decreased mST, enhanced SFV titre and greater tissue damage were observed in lead exposed-SFV-infected mice. Conclusion Pre-exposure to lead increases the susceptibility of mice towards SFV infection. Further studies are suggested in view of the persistence of lead in the environment and the possibility of infection by microbial pathogens.
