Effects of oral probiotics on inflammation and intestinal function in adult patients after appendectomy: Randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Appendectomy is an acute abdominal surgery that is often accompanied by severe abdominal inflammation. Oral probiotics are one of the postoperative treatments for rapid rehabilitation. However, there is a lack of prospective studies on this topic after appendectomy. AIM To investigate whether the postoperative probiotics can modulate the inflammatory response and restore intestinal function in patients following appendectomy. METHODS This was a prospective, randomized trial. A total of 60 emergency patients were randomly divided into a control group (n = 30) and a probiotic group (n = 30). Patients in the control group started to drink some water the first day after surgery, and those in the probiotic group were given water supplemented with Bacillus licheniformis capsules for 5 consecutive days postsurgery. The indices of inflammation and postoperative conditions were recorded, and the data were analyzed with RStudio 4.3.2 software. RESULTS A total of 60 participants were included. Compared with those in the control group, the C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 and procalcitonin (PCT) levels were significantly lower in the probiotic group at 2 d after surgery (P = 2.224e-05, P = 0.037, and P = 0.002, respectively, all P < 0.05). This trend persisted at day 5 post-surgery, with CRP and PCT levels remaining significantly lower in the probiotic group (P = 0.001 and P = 0.043, both P < 0.05). Furthermore, probiotics resulted in a shorter time to first flatus and a greater percentage of gram-negative bacilli in the feces (P = 0.035, P = 0.028, both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Postoperative oral administration of probiotics may modulate the gut microbiota, benefit the recovery of the early inflammatory response, and subsequently enhance recovery after appendectomy.

A polycrystalline Voronoi aggregation with a free surface is applied as the representative volume element（RVE）of the nickel-based GH4169 superalloy.Considering the plastic deformation mechanism at the grain level and the Bauschinger effect,a crystal plasticity model reflecting the nonlinear kinematic hardening of crystal slipping system is applied.The microscopic inhomogeneous deformation during cyclic loading is calculated through numerical simulation of crystal plasticity.The deformation inhomogeneity on the free surface of the RVE under cyclic loading is described respectively by using the following parameters：standard deviation of the longitudinal strain in macro tensile direction,statistical average of first principal strains,and standard deviation of longitudinal displacement.The relationship between the fatigue cycle number and the evolution of inhomogeneous deformation of the material’s free surface is investigated.This research finds that：（1）The inhomogeneous deformation of the material free surface is significantly higher than that of the RVE inside;（2）the increases of the characterization parameters of inhomogeneous deformation on the free surface with cycles reflect the local maximum deformation of the RVE growing during cyclic loading;（3）these parameters can be used as criteria to assess and predict the low-cycle fatigue life rationally.

Exploring zinc-free anode materials is one of the effective strategies to get the zinc dendrites problem of flexible zinc ion battery(ZIB)solved.In this work,an analogous heterostructure(AHS)is constructed from the excellent MXene(Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x))and TiSe_(2) nanosheets.The AHS not only possesses numerous diffu-sion paths and Zn^(2+)storage sites but also possesses a stable conductive network to accelerate charge transfer in the electrode.As a collaborative advantage,electrochemical measurement results show that MXene/TiSe_(2) electrodes display an excellent specific capacity of 177.9 mAh g^(-1) at 0.10 A g^(-1) and a long-term cycling stability of 77.4%capacity retention after 400 cycles.DFT computations further demon-strate the excellent performance of MXene/TiSe_(2) electrodes including desirable electronic conductivity and low Zn^(2+)migration barriers.The assembled flexible ZIB not only delivers a good specific capacity of 42.2μAh cm^(-2) at 0.20 mA cm^(-2) and a competitive energy density of 37.4μWh cm^(-2) but also exhibits excellent flexibility and thermostability.Furthermore,after 400 cycles at 0.60 A g^(-1),flexible ZIB shows a capacity retention of 73.8%.This work gives a successful attempt to design 2D layered materials as Zn metal-free anode for flexible ZIB.

Chern insulators have been generalized to many classical wave systems and thereby lead to many potential applications such as robust waveguides, quantum computation and high-performance lasers. However, the band structure of a material can be either topologically trivial or non-trivial, depending on how the crystal structure is designed. Here, we propose a second Chern crystal in a four-dimensional parameter space by introducing two extra synthetic translation dimensions. Since the topology of the bulk bands in the synthetic translation space is intrinsically non-trivial, our proposed four-dimensional crystal is guaranteed to be topologically non-trivial regardless of the crystal’s detailed configuration. We derive the topologically protected modes on the lower dimensional boundaries of such a crystal via dimension reduction.Remarkably, we observe the one-dimensional gapless dislocation modes and confirm their robustness in experiments. Our findings provide novel perspectives on topologically non-trivial crystals and may inspire designs of classical wave devices.

The recent realization of valley physics in photonic systems has enriched the topological phases of light with protected edge modes and shown applications in designing high-performance photonic devices. However, the widely reported valley Hall effect of light in two-dimensional systems is limited to one single polarization. Here, we present dual-polarization two-dimensional valley photonic crystals by simultaneously opening two frequency accidental degenerate Dirac cones. Two band gaps with different polarizations are characterized by opposite-valley Chern numbers, which are confirmed by the opposite-phase vortex distributions of bulk modes and opposite Berry curvatures. This situation results in the polarization-dependent refraction of bulk and edge modes, which locate in opposite valleys. The polarization-independent topological valley transport is also demonstrated. Our work shows the flexible control of light in topological photonic systems with a polarization degree of freedom and has applications in polarization multiplexing photonic devices.

Self-charging power systems collecting energy harvesting technology and batteries are attracting extensive attention.To solve the disadvantages of the traditional integrated system,such as highly dependent on energy supply and complex structure,an airrechargeable Zn battery based on MoS_(2)/PANI cathode is reported.Benefited from the excellent conductivity desolvation shield of PANI,the MoS_(2)/PANI cathode exhibits ultra-high capacity(304.98 mAh g^(−1) in N_(2) and 351.25 mAh g^(−1) in air).In particular,this battery has the ability to collect,convert and store energy simultaneously by an airrechargeable process of the spontaneous redox reaction between the discharged cathode and O2 from air.The air-rechargeable Zn batteries display a high open-circuit voltage(1.15 V),an unforgettable discharge capacity(316.09 mAh g^(−1) and the air-rechargeable depth is 89.99%)and good air-recharging stability(291.22 mAh g^(−1) after 50 air recharging/galvanostatic current discharge cycle).Most importantly,both our quasi-solid zinc ion batteries and batteries modules have excellent performance and practicability.This work will provide a promising research direction for the material design and device assembly of the next-generation self-powered system.

Improving Li Plating Behaviors Through Cu-Sn Alloy-Coated Current Collector for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anodes

Alloy anode with good reversibility of lithium plating/stripping and long cycling stability is considered as promising anode materials.Here,Cu-Sn alloy is used as the substrate for Li deposition to induce the most densely packed arrangement of Li atoms,thus presenting high lithiophilicity and improving Li plating behaviors.The LiFePO4-based full cell with the asprepared dendrite-free Li metal anode retained at 85 mAh g-1 with a high coulombic efficiency of 99.5% after 300 cycles,presenting a capacity retention of 79.4%.This strategy provides a new perspective to structure dendrite-free Li anode for the next-generation high-energy density batteries.

BACKGROUND Limited knowledge exists regarding the casual associations linking blood metabolites and the risk of developing colorectal cancer.AIM To investigate causal associations between blood metabolites and colon cancer.METHODS The study utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization(MR)analysis to investigate the causal impact of 486 blood metabolites on colorectal cancer.The primary method of analysis used was the inverse variance weighted model.To further validate the results several sensitivity analyses were performed,including Cochran's Q test,MR-Egger intercept test,and MR robust adjusted profile score.These additional analyses were conducted to ensure the reliability and robustness of the findings.RESULTS After rigorous selection for genetic variation,486 blood metabolites were included in the MR analysis.We found Mannose[odds ratio(OR)=2.09(1.10-3.97),P=0.024],N-acetylglycine[OR=3.14(1.78-5.53),P=7.54×10^(-8)],X-11593-O-methylascorbate[OR=1.68(1.04-2.72),P=0.034],1-arachidonoylglycerophosphocholine[OR=4.23(2.51-7.12),P=6.35×10^(-8)]and 1-arachidonoylglycerophosphoethanolamine 4[OR=3.99(1.17-13.54),P=0.027]were positively causally associated with colorectal cancer,and we also found a negative causal relationship between Tyrosine[OR=0.08(0.01-0.63),P=0.014],Urate[OR=0.25(0.10-0.62),P=0.003],N-acetylglycine[0.73(0.54-0.98),P=0.033],X-12092[OR=0.89(0.81-0.99),P=0.028],Succinylcarnitine[OR=0.48(0.27-0.84),P=0.09]with colorectal cancer.A series of sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the rigidity of the results.CONCLUSION This study showed a causal relationship between 10 blood metabolites and colorectal cancer,of which 5 blood metabolites were found to be causal for the development of colorectal cancer and were confirmed as risk factors.The other five blood metabolites are protective factors.
