The effects of a high magnetic field on the evolution of the single-phase interface and the liquid-solid interface energy in Al-Cu alloy were investigated experimentally.It is found that the application of the magnetic field has a significant promotion effect on the migration of liquid droplets,accelerating the formation of the single-phase interface.This should be attributed to the thermoelectric(TE)magnetic convection in the droplets which has enhanced the diffusion and increased the migration speed of liquid droplets.Further,the effect of the high magnetic field on the solid-liquid interface energy is analyzed by an improved grain boundary groove(GBG)method.The average solid-liquid interface energy of theα-Al/Al-Cu and Al2Cu/Al-Cu systems increases and decreases with the increase of the magnetic field,respectively.The above experiment results are well explained based on the formation and interaction of the magnetic dipole at the solid-liquid interface.Moreover,experimental results reveal that the magnetic-field-induced interface energy increases and decreases the nucleation undercooling of the Al-30wt.%Cu alloy and Al-35wt.%Cu alloy,respectively.By studying the effect of the magnetic-field-induced interface energy on the nucleation undercooling,the understanding of the interface energy-induced nucleation undercooling deepens.

Mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)controls cellular anabolism,and mTOR signaling is hyperactive in most cancer cells.As a result,inhibition of mTOR signaling benefits cancer patients.Rapamycin is a US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)-approved drug,a specific mTOR complex 1(mTORC1)inhibitor,for the treatment of several different types of cancer.However,rapamycin is reported to inhibit cancer growth rather than induce apoptosis.Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex(PDHc)is the gatekeeper for mitochondrial pyruvate oxidation.PDHc inactivation has been observed in a number of cancer cells,and this alteration protects cancer cells from senescence and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NAD^(+))exhaustion.In this paper,we describe our finding that rapamycin treatment promotes pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 subunit alpha 1(PDHA1)phosphorylation and leads to PDHc inactivation dependent on mTOR signaling inhibition in cells.This inactivation reduces the sensitivity of cancer cells'response to rapamycin.As a result,rebooting PDHc activity with dichloroacetic acid(DCA),a pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase(PDK)inhibitor,promotes cancer cells'susceptibility to rapamycin treatment in vitro and in vivo.

Controlling and adjusting the concentration distribution during solidification process using static magnetic fields

As concentration distribution changes have important effects on material structures and properties,controlling the concentration distribution is essential to alloy performance.The aim of the present work is to control and adjust the concentration distribution by the static magnetic field.It is found that the magnetic field disperses grain boundary segregation and causes the uniform distribution of concentration.Further,by the three-dimensional computed tomography(3 D-CT) reconstruction,the flow distribution is seen and the effect mechanism of the magnetic field is revealed.The present work may clarify the ambiguous understanding on the effect of the static magnetic field on solidification process.

Formation mechanism of ring-like segregation and structure during directional solidification under axial static magnetic field

The effect of the axial static magnetic field on the macro-segregation and structure in the Al-Cu and NiMn-Ga alloys during directional solidification is investigated experimentally and numerically.It is found that the ring-like segregation and structure in the above-mentioned two alloys form during directional solidification at a certain growth speed under a moderate magnetic field.For the Al-Cu and Ni-Mn-Ga alloys,the moderate values of the magnetic field under which the ring-like structure forms are about 0.5 T and 1.0 T at respective growth speed of 10μm/s and 5μm/s.Further,the distributions of the flow and solute in the Al-Cu alloy during directional solidification under the axial static magnetic field is numerically simulated.Numerical results reveal that the rotary thermoelectric(TE)magnetic convection forms in the mushy zone during directional solidification under an axial magnetic field.This flow will induce the formation of the ring-like macro-segregation and structure.Changes in structures under the magnetic field in the experimental results are in good agreement with the distributions of the TE magnetic convection and solute in the numerical results.Therefore,the formation of the ring-like structure and segregation under the magnetic field should be attributed to the solute redistribution induced by the TE magnetic convection.

Polymer solar cells(PSCs)featuring nonfullerene acceptors have attracted a great deal of attention in the research community.Exposure of these active layers to sunlight during operation demands excellent thermal stability.Optimizing PSCs often requires a step of thermal annealing,while long-term annealing often places a constraint on their stable operation at elevated temperature and results in a progressive loss of photovoltaic performance.Hence,it is crucial to understand and control the fundamental affecting factors on the thermal stability of nonfullerene PSCs.This review highlights the relationships between microstructure and thermal stability of PSCs and summarizes promising strategies to push this technology toward the level of practical application.Finally,we present the current challenges and prospective of this research area,intending to advance the practical applications of stable PSCs based on nonfullerene acceptors.

Stress granules are non-membranous cytoplasmic foci induced by various stress conditions.It is a protective strategy used by cells to suppress overall translation during stress.In cancer cells,it was thought that the formation of stress granules could protect them from apoptosis and induces resistance towards anti-cancer drugs or radiation treatment which makes the stress granules a potential target for cancer treatment.However,most of our understanding of stress granules are still in the stage of molecular and cell biology,and a transitional gap for its actual effect on clinical settings remains.In this review,we summarize the mechanism and effect of stress granules formation in cancer and try to illuminate its potential applications in cancer therapy,using breast cancer as an example.

Nucleation kinetics of paramagnetic and diamagnetic metal melts under a high magnetic field

The influence of a high magnetic field(HMF)on the nucleation kinetics of paramagnetic aluminum and diamagnetic zinc melts has been investigated by differential thermal analysis(DTA).It is found that the application of an HMF increases the undercooling of pure aluminum and pure zinc at the same heatingcooling rates.Moreover,the quantitative analysis of activation energy calculated from the DTA results using the Kissinger method manifests that the HMF reduces the activation energy of pure aluminum and pure zinc.Regardless of magnetism,the nucleation frequency under an HMF is higher than that without an HMF.Furthermore,the increase in undercooling under the HMF is mainly attributed to the increase of the contact angle,calculated by the functional relationship between the cooling rate and undercooling.This result is consistent with the increase of the calculated nucleation work for pure aluminum and pure zinc.Additionally,the increase in undercooling caused by the HMF is partly ascribed to the magnetic field-induced suppression of thermal convection in the undercooled melt.

Two thin middle-crust low-velocity zones imaged in the Chuan-Dian region of southeastern Tibetan Plateau and their tectonic implications

Intracrustal low-velocity zones(LVZs)indicate a mechanically weak crust and are widely observed in the southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau.However,their spatial distributions and formation mechanisms remain controversial.To investigate their distribution and detailed morphology of the LVZs in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau,here we used teleseismic events and continuous waveform data recorded by 40 broadband seismic stations newly deployed in the Sichuan-Yunnan region from December 2018 to October 2020.A total of 12,924 high-quality P-wave receiver functions and 5–40 s fundamental Rayleigh surface wave phase velocity dispersion curves from ambient noise cross-correlation functions were obtained.The Swave velocity model at a depth interval of 0–100 km in the study area was inverted by using the trans-dimensional Markov chain Monte Carlo strategy to jointly invert the complementary data of the receiver function waveform and Rayleigh surface wave phase velocity dispersion.Our results show that there are two separate LVZs(~3.5 km/s)surrounding the rigid Daliangshan subblock at crustal depths of approximately 30–40 km,providing new constraints on the geometry of the LVZs in our study region.The two LVZs obtained in this study may represent the middle crustal flow channels,through which the material in the center of the Tibetan Plateau extrudes to its southeast margin.Blocked by the rigid Sichuan Basin and the spindle-like Daliangshan subblock,the material continues to flow southward through the mechanically weak middle crustal channels surrounding the Daliangshan subblock.In addition,the existence of thin LVZs in the middle crust plays an important role in understanding the decoupling between the upper and lower crust in the study area.It also provides new constraint on the complex tectonic deformation process of the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau caused by the collision and compression of the Indian and the Eurasian plates.

Microstructure and soft-magnetic properties of FeCoPCCu nanocrystalline alloys

Fe(83.2-x)CoxP(10)C6Cu(0.8)(x=0,4,6,8 and 10)alloys with a high amorphous-forming ability and good softmagnetic properties were successfully synthesized.Saturation magnetic flux density(Bs)is effectively enhanced from 1.53 T to 1.61 T for as-quenched alloy by minor Co addition,which is consistent well with the result of the linear relationship between average magnetic moment and magnetic valence.For Cocontained alloys,the value of corecivity(Hc)is mainly determined by magneto-crystalline anisotropy,while effective permeability(μe)is dominated by grain size and average saturation polarization.After proper heat treatment,the Fe(79.2)Co4P(10)C6Cu(0.8)nanocrystalline alloy exhibited excellent soft-magnetic properties including a high Bsof 1.8 T,a low Hcof 6.6 A/m and a highμeof 15,510,which is closely related to the high volume fraction of α-(Fe,Co)grains and refined uniform nanocrystalline microstructure.

Novel sliding-mode disturbance observer-based tracking control with applications to robot manipulators

This paper proposes a sliding-mode disturbance observer(SMDOB)-based tracking controller for a class of nonlinear systems with modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. The SMDOB is constructed using an extended state observer embedded by a filtered sliding mode term. The chattering caused by the sliding mode is compressed by the frequency bandwidths of both the extended state observer and the control system. The novelties of the proposed controller are as follows:(1) The semiglobal asymptotical stability of the combined controller-observer system is guaranteed without the boundedness assumption of the time derivatives of modeling uncertainties;(2) the SMDOB can be implemented with a low complexity because of only three parameters to be tuned. Applications to robot manipulators illustrate the effectiveness of the SMDOB-based tracking control strategy.
