A behavior and physiology-based decision support tool to predict thermal comfort and stress in non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late-gestation sows

Background:Although thermal indices have been proposed for swine,none to our knowledge differentiate by reproductive stage or predict thermal comfort using behavioral and physiological *** study objective was to develop a behavior and physiology-based decision support tool to predict thermal comfort and stress in multiparous(3.28±0.81)non-pregnant(n=11),mid-gestation(n=13),and late-gestation(n=12)***:Regression analyses were performed using PRoC MIXED in SAS 9.4 to determine the optimal environmental indicator[dry bulb temperature(tDB)and dew point]of heat stress(HS)in non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and lategestation sows with respiration rate(RR)and body temperature(tB)successively used as the dependent variable in a cubic function.A linear relationship was observed for skin temperature(t_(S))indicating that tDB rather than the sow HS response impacted t_(S)and so t_(S)was excluded from further *** stage was significant for all analyses(Pt stress thresholds for each reproductive stage were calculated using the inflections points of RR for mild HS and tB for moderate and severe *** HS inflection points differed for non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late gestation sows and occurred at 25.5,25.1,and 24.0℃,*** HS inflection points differed for non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late gestation sows and occurred at 28.1,27.8,and 25.5℃,*** HS inflection points were similar for non-pregnant and mid-gestation sows(32.9℃)but differed for late-gestation sows(30.8℃).these data were integrated with previously collected behavioral thermal preference data to estimate the tDB that non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late-gestation sows found to be cool(tDBtDB preference range),comfortable(tDB=tDB preference range),and warm(tDB preference rangetDBonclusions:the results of this study provide valuable information about thermal comfort and thermal stress thresholds in sows at three reproductive *** dev

there were two species of crayfish “red-claw” (Cherax quadricarinatus) and “blue-huna” (Cherax albertisii) for their aquaculture potential. Crayfish were susceptible to fungal (crawfish plague), parasitic (protozoa and nematodes), and bacterial pathogen. A number of ectosymbiont Craspedella sp. have been observed on red-claw and blue-huna. the flatworms were commonly found almost in the whole body, on the upper exoskeleton behind the head, in the gill cavity and on the claws and underside of crayfish. Although their number sometimes was very high, they didn’t cause any problems especially for the new molting crayfish. Micro organisms living on the crayfish surface body and worms didn’t cause any pathological changes. Adults Craspedella sp. can be eliminated by a short bath in salt water or formaldehyde 37% solutions for several hours. this treatment didn’t kill worm eggs, so it needs to be repeated every one week. Moreover, hyposalinity or oSt (osmotic Shock therapy) is one of the most effective therapies for ectoparasites on Craspedella sp. with dose of bath treatment 15 grams per litre of salt (15 ppt) for more than 3 hours, and dipped in salt water at 30 ppt (or 3.0 ppm, seawater salinity) for 15 - 20 minutes.

About the Satisfaction of the Students Attending the Health area Academic Courses of the University of Bari

In the last decade, the world of academia has faced a period of strong/severe resource constraints/reduction. At the same time, there has been an increasing interest of the Ministry of Research （MIUR） in designing methods to evaluate University performance in order to rank efficient Universities and to reduce potential inefficiencies, so providing the administration authorities with measures that may be used for an optimal resources allocation. With this increasing interest in University performance, a wide academic debate has emerged about the models and measures adopted, based on several quantitative measures of inputs that, sometimes, have been borrowed from the Italian Health organizational model, much more consolidated in its experience. We cite, for all, the students evaluation in terms of standard cost within the resources allocation model introduced last year, and the ＂customers＂ satisfaction measurement, whose main goal is to provide an independent system of regular evaluation of student satisfaction and of the University teaching quality. the aim of this paper is to deal with the students opinion about the quality of teaching, as perceived as ＂users＂ while attending their academic courses in the health area. We agree with the statement that the high quality of healthcare services provided to the community depends also on the main factor, the human capital involved in supplying them. In Italy, the academic courses belonging to the health area provide the access to a limited number of students who passed a hard selection. this rule was introduced by the law n.264/1999 to harmonize the Italian University system to the European one in order to guarantee the high quality of students higher education in this field. A Putative Protein with No Known Function in Arabidopsis thaliana Harbors a Domain with Adenylyl Cyclase Activity

Adenylyl cyclases (ACs) are a special group of enzymes that catalyze formation of the second messenger molecule, 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) from 5'-adenosine triphosphate (AtP). Apparently, even though cAMP is increasingly becoming an important signaling molecule in higher plants, the identification of plant ACs has somewhat remained slow. Here we report the recombinant cloning, partial expression and affinity purification of the truncated version (AtAC261-388) of a putative Arabidopsis thaliana protein (AtAC: At3g21465) followed by a demonstration of its inherent enzymatic activity as an AC. Currently, AtAC is not assigned any particular function in A. thaliana but simply annotated as an AC-like protein and, therefore, we targeted it for our study to establish if it is indeed a bona fide AC molecule. From our work, we firstly, show through enzyme immunoassaying and mass spectrometry that the recombinant AtAC261-388 can generate cAMP from AtP in vitro in a manganese-dependent manner that is activated by calcium and hydrogen carbonate. Secondly, we reveal through computational analysis that the AC center of AtAC is solvent-exposed, and amenable to the unhindered access of AtP as a substrate for catalysis. Lastly, we show that the recombinant AtAC261-388 can complement AC-deficiency (cyaA mutation) in SP850 cells when expressed in this mutant Escherichia coli strain.

Natural killer(NK)cells are attractive effector cells of the innate immune system against human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)and ***,NK cell therapies are limited by the fact that target cells evade NK cells,for example,in latent reservoirs(in HIV)or through upregulation of inhibitory signals(in cancer).to address this limitation,we describe a biodegradable nanoparticlebased“priming”approach to enhance the cytotoxic efficacy of peripheral blood mononuclear cell-derived NK *** present poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA)nanodepots(NDs)that co-encapsulate prostratin,a latency-reversing agent,and anti-CD25(aCD25),a cell surface binding antibody,to enhance primary NK cell function against HIV and *** utilize a nanoemulsion synthesis scheme to encapsulate both prostratin and aCD25 within the PLGA NDs(termed Pro-aCD25-NDs).Physicochemical characterization studies of the NDs demonstrated that our synthesis scheme resulted in stable and monodisperse *** NDs successfully released both active prostratin and anti-CD25,and with controllable release *** Pro-aCD25-NDs were administered in an in vitro model of latent HIV and acute t cell leukemia using J-Lat 10.6 cells,the NDs were observed to prime J-Lat cells resulting in significantly increased NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity compared to free prostratin plus anti-CD25,and other *** findings demonstrate the feasibility of using our Pro-aCD25-NDs to prime target cells for enhancing the cytotoxicity of NK cells as antiviral or antitumor agents.

<i>In Vitro</i>Mitigation of Pathogenic Bacteria and Virulence Factors Using a Hydroconductive Dressing

Wound infections can have devastating effects on healing as well as the health of the patient. Complications increase when the pathogens are capable of producing virulence factors and/or are drug resistant. Novel methods are needed to take on the challenges of treating such wounds. Drawtex®?dressing is purported to have hydroconductive properties that allow it to draw away debris and exudate from the wound into the dressing. the goal of this work is to better define these interactions of this experimental dressing with bacteria and virulence factors. two series of in vitro experiments were performed. First, pieces of experimental dressing were submerged in a series of cultures in flasks and samples of the dressing and cultures were taken over 90 minutes and assayed for bacteria and virulence factor levels. Second, experimental or standard care (control) dressings were placed on selective agar plated with pathogens of interest. Dressings and the agar covered by them were used to quantify bacteria and virulence factors over time. the experimental dressing took up both bacteria and virulence factors to a larger extent than the control dressing. Experimental dressing significantly reduced the load of bacteria and virulence factors in cultures compared to control culture without dressing. Based on the ability of the dressing to take up bacteria and virulence factors in this study, the data point to the potential for this dressing to be similarly effective in reducing or eliminating pathogen from wounds, potentially increasing the chances of successful wound healing.

Potential impacts of UV exposure on lichen communities:a pilot study of Nothofagus dombeyi trunks in southernmost Chile

High-latitude terrestrial ecosystems face the triple threats of climate warming,increased exposure to UV arising from polar ozone depletion,and *** communities of southernmost Chile are recognized for their high diversity,which includes nitrogen-fixing *** lichens are common on forest trees,contribute nitrogen to forests,and are sensitive to exposure following deforestation(widespread in this region).In a pilot study of exposure effects on tree lichens,using nondestructive imaging methods,we compared lichen communities on trunks of isolated *** tree trunks of southern Chilean beech(Nothofagus dombeyi,Nothofagaceae).We chose trees of similar diameter and trunk lean angle in conserved forest and nearby logged meadow on Navarino Island,XII Region Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica,Chile,within the annual southern ozone ***-five percent of cyanolichen records,including Nephroma antarcticum,and 66%of records for other foliose lichens were from the forest,whereas pendulous usneoid lichens dominated *** bark at the meadow *** of cyanolichen growth on isolated trees could affect ecosystem function in this poorly studied *** factors contributing to strong community differences were increased light intensity,UV radiation,and wind stress,plus limited ability of lichens to colonize isolated trees in the logged *** radiation was likely an important stressor for some lichen species but not *** recommend more extensive monitoring to pinpoint causes of differing lichen communities,and we encourage better protection of bark-dwelling lichens in southern hemisphere regions facing multiple threats.
