Ranking e.v.ronmental and edaphic attributes driving soil microbial community structure and activity with special attention to spatial and temporal scales

The incredibly complex soil microbial communities at small scales make their analysis and identification of reasons for the obse.v.d structures *** community structure is mainly a result of the inoculum(dispersal),the selective advantages of those organisms under the habitat-based e.v.ronmental attributes,and the ability of those colonizers to sustain themse.v.s over *** soil is protective,and its microbial inhabitants have long adapted to varied soil conditions,significant portions of the soil microbial community structure are likely ***,a substantial portion of the community will not correlate to often measured soil *** suggest that the drivers be ranked on the basis of their importance to the fundamental needs of the microbes:(i)those that supply energy,i.e.,organic carbon and electron acceptors;(i)e.v.ronmental effectors or stressors,i.e.,pH,salt,drought,and toxic chemicals;(ii)macro-organism associations,i.e.,plants and their seasonality,animals and their fecal matter,and soil fauna;and(iv)nutrients,in order,N,P,and probably of lesser importance,other micronutrients,and *** relevance of drivers also varies with spatial and time scales,for example,aggregate to field to regional,and persistent to dynamic populations to transcripts,and with the extent of phylogenetic difference,hence phenotypic differences in organismal *** present a summary matrix to provide guidance on which drivers are important for particular studies,with special emphasis on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales,and illustrate this with genomic and population(rRNA gene)data from selected studies.

Thermoluminescence characterization of natural and synthetic irradiated Ce-monazites

The thermoluminescence(TL)emission of synthetic and natural Ce-monazites was characterized here to determine the potential application in the identification of microscopic defects from a qualitative point of view trying to link each TL peak to a chemical-physical *** kinetic parameters that lead the luminescence processes were calculated by means of variable heating rate and computing glow curve deconvolution methods and allow identifying three groups of components at~90,130 and 290℃(for the mineral sample)and~90,170,220,270 and 320℃(for the synthetic CePO_(4):Nd_(0.20),La_(0.25)).The main differences appreciated in these complex TL curves are mainly due to(i)the content of impurities(natural sample contains lanthanides as well as U 0.60%and Th 5.22%)and(ii)the degree of crystallinity of the samples which is directly related to the type of impurities(synthetic monazite relies only on Nd and La).The behavior of the dose response in the range of 1-8 Gy is similar for both samples;the TL intensity increases linearly as the dose increases without changes in the position of the maxima,denoting first-order kinetic luminescence *** peak could be mostly associated with structural defects(i.e.,phase transitions),chemical reactions(i.e.,Ce3+?Ce4+redox reaction,dehydration or dehydroxylation processes)or intrinsic defects(i.e.,Frenkel defects,ODCs or NBOHCs).

The focus of e.v.ronmental regulations has changed significantly since the introduction of the bioassay as a standard means of assessing e.v.ronmental *** in this change is an increasing emphasis on protecting the integrity of natural ecosystems,which incorporate community-and system-level properties as well as organismal and population ***,support for the use of multispecies testing has widened to include not only ecologists in academia but e.v.ronmental scientists in the regulatory and industrial sector as *** reason for this trend is clear:the additional e.v.ronmental realism gained from tests utilizing communities of organisms allows for greater insight into the potential hazard of chemicals and other forms of human activity to natural ecosystems that cannot be obtained from single species tests *** of the problems cited for multispecies testing early in their evolution as a hazard assessment tool have been refuted or *** particular,the use of natural microbial communities minimizes several shortcomings typically associated with multispecies toxicity *** discussion includes the utility of microcosm and mesocosm tests using aquatic microbial communities as hazard assessment tools in conjunction with accumulating information on their performance in toxicity testing *** increasing body of experimental evidence supports an expansion in the use of these tests for a variety of regulatory and research purposes.A shift in research focus is needed,however,to answer remaining questions and further refine standard protocols for these.v.luable ecotoxicological tools.

Ballistic performance of titanium-based layered composites made using blended elemental powder metallurgy and hot isostatic pressing

Metal matrix composites tiles based on Ti-6Al-4v(Ti64)alloy,reinforced with 10,20,and 40(vol%)of either TiC or TiB particles were made using press-and-sinter blended elemental powder metallurgy(BePM)and then bonded together into 3-layer laminated plates using hot isostatic pressing(HIP).The laminates were ballistically tested and demonstrated superior *** microstructure and properties of the laminates were analyzed to determine the effect of the BePM and HIP processing on the ballistic properties of the layered *** effect of porosity in sintered composites on further diffusion bonding of the plates during HIP is analyzed to understand the bonding features at the interfaces between different adjacent layers in the *** ballistic performance of fabricated structures was explained by a significant reduction in the residual porosity of the BePM products by their additional processing using HIP,which provides an unprecedented increase in the hardness of the layered *** is argued that the combination of the used two technologies,BePM and HIP is principally complimentary for the materials in question with the abilities to solve the essential problems of each used individually.

This paper is devoted to the study of a nonlinear evolution eddy current model of the type δtB（H）＋ △↓× （ △↓ × H） =0 subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions H × v = 0 and a given initial datum. Here, the magnetic properties of a soft ferromagnet are linked by a nonlinear material law described by B（H）. We apply the backward euler method for the time discretization and we derive the error estimates in suitable function spaces. The results depend on the nonlinearity of B（H）.

This paper presents progress on the characterization of guided-wave light modulators for use in a low-cost holographic video monitor based on the MIT scanned-aperture architecture. A custom-built characterization apparatus was used to study device bandwidth, RGB operation, and linearity in an effort to identify optimal parameters for high bandwidth, GPU-driven, full-color holographic display.

The world has become highly dependent on reliable refrigeration technology. Without it, our food supply would be still seasonal and limited to locally produced nonperishable items; comfortable living conditions via climate control would be impossible; and certain medical advancements, e.g. MRI diagnostics, organ transplantation, organ and tissue cryo-storage, and cryo-surgery would be impossible. This technology remains essentially unchanged since it was invented 100 years ago.
