In this paper, a scalable hardware and software architecture for tiled display systems (a.k.a. videowalls), which can be implemented by using low-cost devices, together with a dynamic web-based management and configuration service are proposed. It has been designed to support both stored and live broadcast/broadband content, in mosaic or warp distributions. The displays and devices can be dynamically configured via web in different ways: the displays can create a single display of a larger size;or they can be configured in a customized way in order to playout different media contents in different display combinations. As display renderers, low-cost devices are proposed as the main hardware element to obtain affordable videowall systems. As a proof of concept, two prototypes have been implemented, including an accurate synchronization mechanism based on a Master/Slave control scheme and aggressive and smooth playout adjustment techniques. To evidence the good performance of the prototypes and configuration service, both objective and subjective evaluations have been conducted regarding synchronization accuracy and usability. On the one hand, the mean values of the asynchronies between the video playout processes in each display are kept below 25ms (i.e., frame accuracy). On the other hand, the obtained usability score in the System Usability Scale (SUS) test has been 88.65, which is considered as excellent.

Background:The activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex reduces the cochlear gain,which is manifested perceptually as decreased auditory ***,it has remained unclear whether the extent of this suppression varies according to the cochlear region *** we aims to assess the magnitude of contralateral efferent suppression across human cochlea,at low levels,and its impact on hearing ***:Assuming that acoustic stimulation activates the contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex,we evaluated the magnitude of the suppressive effect as a function of frequency in 17 subjects with normal *** thresholds were measured for bursts tones of various durations(10,100,and 500 ms)and frequencies(250,500,1000,4000,and 8000 Hz)in the presence or absence of contralateral white noise at 60 d B ***:We found that contralateral noise raised the absolute threshold for the burst tones *** effect was greater at lower than higher frequencies(3.85 d B at 250 Hz vs.2.22 d B at 8000 Hz).conclusions:Our findings suggest that in humans,the magnitude of this suppression varies according to the cochlear region stimulated,with a greater effect towards the apex(lower frequencies)than the base(higher frequencies)of the cochlea.

The manipulation of the polarization properties of light in guided media is crucial in many classical and quantum optical ***,the capability of current technology to finely define the state of polarization of particular wavelengths is far from the level of maturity in amplitude ***,we introduce a light-by-light polarization control mechanism with wavelength selectivity based on the change of the phase retardance by means of stimulated Brillouin *** show that any point on the Poincare sphere can be reached from an arbitrary input state of polarization with little variation of the signal amplitude(louin processing schemes,the degradation of the noise figure is small(1.5 dB for a full 2πrotation).This all-optical polarization controller can forge the development of new polarization-based techniques in optical communication,laser engineering,sensing,quantum systems,and light-based probing of chemical and biological systems.
