Durable, superhydrophobic, antireflection, and low haze glass surfaces using scalable metal dewetting nanostructuring

In this paper we report a multifunctional nanostructured surface on glass that, for the first time, combines a wide range of optical, wetting and durability properties, including low omnidirectional reflectivity, low haze, high transmission, superhydrophobicity, oleophobicity, and high mechanical resistance. Nanostructures have been fabricated on a glass surface by reactive ion etching through a nanomask, which is formed by dewetting ultrathin metal films （〈 10 nm thickness） subjected to rapid thermal annealing （RTA）. The nanostructures strongly reduce the initial surface reflectivity （-4%）, to less than 0.4% in the 390--800 nm wavelength range while keeping the haze at low values （〈 0.9%）. The corresponding water contact angle （0c） is -24.5~, while that on a flat surface is -43.5~. The hydrophilic wetting nanostructure can be changed into a superhydrophobic and oleophobic surface by applying a fluorosilane coating, which achieves contact angles for water and oil of -156.3~ and -116.2~, respectively. The multicomponent composition of the substrate （Coming~ glass） enables ion exchange through the surface, so that the nanopillars＇ mechanical robustness increases, as is demonstrated by the negligible changes in surface morphology and optical performance after 5,000-run wipe test. The geometry of the nanoparticles forming the nanomask depends on the metal material, initial metal thickness and RTA parameters. In particular we show that by simply changing the initial thickness of continuous Cu films we can tailor the metal nanoparticles＇ surface density and size. The developed surface nanostructuring does not require expensive lithography, thus it can be controlled and implemented on an industrial scale, which is crucial for applications.

Need for simulation in laparoscopic colorectal surgery training

The dissemination of laparoscopic colorectal surgery(LCs) has been slow despite increasing evidence for the clinical benefits, with a prolonged learning curve being one of the main restrictions for a prompt uptake. Performing advanced laparoscopic procedures requires dedicated surgical skills and new simulation methods designed precisely for LCs have been established: These include virtual reality simulators, box trainers, animal andhuman tissue and synthetic materials. studies have even demonstrated an improvement in trainees' laparoscopic skills in the actual operating room and a staged approach to surgical simulation with a combination of various training methods should be mandatory in every colorectal training program. The learning curve for LCs could be reduced through practice and skills development in a riskfree setting.

Fire blight disease,caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora(***),is responsible for substantial losses in cultivated apples *** important mechanism of plant immunity is based on the recognition of conserved microbial molecules,named pathogen-associated or microbe-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs or MAMPs),through pattern recognition receptors(PRRs),leading to pattern-triggered immunity(PTI).The interspecies transfer of PRRs represents a promising strategy to engineer broad-spectrum and durable disease resistance in ***,the Arabidopsis thaliana PRR for the PAMP elf18 derived from the elongation factor thermal unstable(EF-Tu)proved to be effective in improving bacterial resistance when expressed into solanaceae and other plant *** this study,we tested whether EFR can affect the interaction of apple with *** by its ectopic expression in the susceptible apple rootstock *** EFR expression led to the activation of PAMP-triggered immune response in apple leaves upon treatment with supernatant of ***,as measured by the production of reactive oxygen species and the induction of known defense *** amount of tissue necrosis associated with *** infection was significantly reduced in the EFR transgenic rootstock compared to the *** results show that the expression of EFR in apple rootstock may be a valuable biotechnology strategy to improve the resistance of apple to fire blight.

Initial experience of a single center with the use of ZsI 475 penile prosthesis

Objective:To evaluate surgical outcomes after implantation of the Zephyr ZsI 475 inflatable penile prosthesis(IPP)and patients’quality of ***:From December 2014 to september 2018,15 patients underwent prosthesis implantation with ZsI 475.A retrospective review of clinical data was ***’quality of life after implantation was investigated with Quality of Life and sexuality with Penile Prosthesis(QoLsPP)***:The median age of patients was 57 years and the average follow-up time was 22 *** patients received a standard implantation due to severe erectile dysfunction(ED);three patients also presented penile curvature and additional corporoplasty with grafting was *** procedures had to be interrupted due to defects of the insertion *** one case a manufacturing defect resulted in a pump *** one case,a severe postoperative complication occurred,which requested explanation of the *** the follow-up,four patients experienced mechanical failure of the *** of QoLsPP questionnaire at 12 months were skewed toward the positive end of the scale in all ***:In our initial experience,ZsI 475 suffered a high rate of mechanical failures;on the other hand,the company showed great commitment in order to improve the quality and reliability of the *** lower cost of ZsI 475 may add to the chances of the product to become a cost-effective alternative to treat those patient who need a IPP.

Efficacy of targeted muscle reinnervation for treating and preventing postamputation pain-a systematic review

Aim:Targeted muscle reinnervation(TMR)is a procedure pioneered to improve control of myoelectric prostheses and was fortuitously found to improve postamputation pain by transferring residual nerve ends from an amputated limb to reinnervate motor nerve units in denervated *** study sought to perform a systematic review of the literature regarding the postamputation pain-related outcomes following ***:PubMed database was queried using the key term“targeted muscle reinnervation”.Articles were chosen based on the following criteria:(1)clinical studies on TMR;(2)greater than one subject;(3)studies were case-controls,comparative cohort analyses,controlled trials,or randomized controlled trials;and(4)studies included one or more outcomes of interest:prosthetic use and functionality,improvement or persistence of pain,indications,complications,donor nerves,and technical aspects of ***:Overall,9 studies including 101 upper extremity and 252 lower extremity nerve transfers were analyzed,with nerve transfer type,amputation location,and specific neurotizations *** studies assessed the efficacy of TMR in addressing phantom limb pain(PLP)and residual limb pain(RLP),with 3 out of 4 studies reporting significant improvements in PROMIs(Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information system)scores in TMR subjects compared to *** additional studies did not analyze PROMIs scores but reported subjective improvements in pain ***:Included studies demonstrated TMR had lower maximal pain and pain intensity,behavior and interference compared to the standard of *** TMR used to treat patients with established painful neuromas also reported improvement in pain compared to baseline.

Metal-halide perovskites are revolutionizing the world of X-ray detectors,due to the development of sensitive,fast,and cost-effective ***-powered operation,ensuring portability and low power consumption,has also been recently demonstrated in both bulk materials and thin ***,the signal stability and repeatability under continuous X-ray exposure has only been tested up to a few hours,often reporting degradation of the detection *** it is shown that self-powered direct X-ray detectors,fabricated starting from a FAPbBr_(3)submicrometer-thick film deposition onto a mesoporous TiO_(2)scaffold,can withstand a 26-day uninterrupted X-ray exposure with negligible signal loss,demonstrating ultra-high operational stability and excellent *** structural modification is observed after irradiation with a total ionizing dose of almost 200 Gy,revealing an unexpectedly high radiation hardness for a metal-halide perovskite thin *** addition,trap-assisted photoconductive gain enabled the device to achieve a record bulk sensitivity of 7.28 C Gy^(−1)cm^(−3)at 0 V,an unprecedented value in the field of thin-film-based photoconductors and photodiodes for“hard”***,prototypal validation under the X-ray beam produced by a medical linear accelerator for cancer treatment is also introduced.

Grassland Height Assessment by satellite Images

Images collected by optical and radar satellite sensors represent a most viable solution for the extraction of biophysical parameters of the earth surface. The mid-resolution dataset acquired by Landsat and sentinel satellites have recently become available free of charge for all users. At the same time, some software for image processing and GIs, like QGIs, R, and ImageJ, have reached a high level of maturity and a large community of users, thanks to their open source license. In this project, free satellite images and open source software have been used for the assessment of the grassland biomass. The overall goal is the enhancement of the statistics of grassland production and dried fodder for the animal breeding. Currently, the National Institute of statistics collects this kind of dataset at the province level. The project consists in some “in situ” surveys in a specific site in central Italy and in the building of a regression model between the grassland heights and the corresponding radiometric values of the most relevant image bands.
