Background schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-saharan Africa and frequently imported to *** urogenital manifestations are often *** aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology *** We carried out a prospective,community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-saharan Africa living in *** serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out,and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured *** We included 388 adult males,mean age 43.5 years[standard Deviation(sD)=12.0,range:18-76].The median time since migration to the European Union was 17[Interquartile range(IQR):11-21]*** most frequent country of origin was senegal(N=179,46.1%).Of the 338,147(37.6%)tested positive for *** eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%.Nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positive schistosoma serology results:pelvic pain(45.2%;OR=1.57,95%CI:1.0-2.4),pain on ejaculation(14.5%;OR=1.85,95%CI:1.0-3.5),dyspareunia(12.4%;OR=2.45,95%CI:1.2-5.2),erectile dysfunction(9.5%;OR=3.10,95%CI:1.3-7.6),self-reported episodes of infertility(32.1%;OR=1.69,95%CI:1.0-2.8),haematuria(55.2%;OR=2.37,95%CI:1.5-3.6),dysuria(52.1%;OR=2.01,95%CI:1.3-3.1),undiagnosed syndromic sTIs(5.4%),and orchitis(20.7%;OR=1.81,95%CI:1.0-3.1).Clinical signs tended to *** Urogenital clinical signs and symptoms are prevalent among male African long-term migrants with a positive schistosoma serology *** involvement can be frequent even among those with long periods of non-residence in their sub-saharan African countries of *** research is needed to develop diagnostic tools and validate therapeutic approaches to chronic schistosomiasis.

Daily activity rhythms, chronotypes, and risk-taking behavior in the signal crayfish

Consistent inter-individual differences in daily activity rhythms(i.e.,chronotypes)can have ecological consequences in determining access to food resources and avoidance of *** most common measure to characterize chronotypes in animals as well as humans is the onset of activity(i.e.,early or late chronotypes).However,daily activity rhythms may also differ in the relative amount of activity displayed at particular time ***,chronotypes may also be linked to other consistent inter-individual differences in behavior(i.e.,personality),such as the propensity to take ***,we used the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculusto test the presence of chronotypes and risk-taking personality traits and a potential behavioral syndrome between these *** first exposed crayfish to 5 days of light-darkness to measure daily activity rhythms and then we applied a visual predator-simulating stimulus in 2 different contexts(neutral and food).Our results showed consistent(i.e.,across 5 days)inter-individual differences in the relative nocturnal activity displayed in the early and middle,but not in the late part of darkness ***,while crayfish displayed inter-individual differences in risk-taking behavior,these were not found to be consistent across 2 ***,we were not able to formally test a behavioral syndrome between these 2 *** conclusion,our study provides the first evidence of chronotypes in the relative amount of activity displayed at particular time *** could be a valuable information for applied ecological aspects related to the signal crayfish,which is a major invasive species of freshwater ecosystems.

Peritoneal adhesions after laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery

Although laparoscopy has the potential to reduce peritoneal trauma and post-operative peritoneal adhesion formation, only one randomized controlled trial and a few comparative retrospective clinical studies have addressed this issue. Laparoscopy reduces de novo adhesion formation but has no efficacy in reducing adhesion reformation after adhesiolysis. Moreover, several studies have suggested that the reduction of de novo post-operative adhesions does not seem to have a significant clinical impact. Experimental data in animal models have suggested that COsub>2sub> pneumoperitoneum can cause acute peritoneal inflammation during laparoscopy depending on the insufflation pressure and the surgery duration. Broad peritoneal cavity protection by the insufflation of a low-temperature humidified gas mixture of COsub>2sub>, Nsub>2sub>O and Osub>2sub> seems to represent the best approach for reducing peritoneal inflammation due to pneumoperitoneum. However, these experimental data have not had a significant impact on the modification of laparoscopic instrumentation. In contrast, surgeons should train themselves to perform laparoscopy quickly, and they should complete their learning curves before testing chemical anti-adhesive agents and anti-adhesion barriers. Chemical anti-adhesive agents have the potential to exert broad peritoneal cavity protection against adhesion formation, but when these agents are used alone, the concentrations needed to prevent adhesions are too high and could cause major post-operative side effects. Anti-adhesion barriers have been used mainly in open surgery, but some clinical data from laparoscopic surgeries are already available. sprays, gels, and fluid barriers are easier to apply in laparoscopic surgery than solid barriers. The reproductive strategy and the vibrational duet of the leafhopper Empoasca vitis

The recent description of a new vibrational mating disruption method to control the leafhopper scaphoideus titanus Ball opened questions about its possible application to other leafhopper pests. since the prerequisite for the method＇s successful application is a deep knowledge of the species mating behavior and the exact role of associated signals, we conducted behavioral assays on the green leafhopper Empoasca vitis Gothe, a pest of grapevine and other crops in Europe and Asia. Laser vibrometer recordings of single and paired individuals （male and female） during a 24-h period enabled us to detect and describe 2 male and 1 female signal. The pair formation starts when the female replies to a male call and a duet is established, then it continues through 2 different behavioral stages： Location and Courtship. The proper courtship begins only when the male locates the female. The latter is characterized by a significant change in temporal parameters that regards both the signals and the duet structure. Although the male calling activity and the female replying rate were the same during the 24 h, a lower number of matings was recorded during the night. We discuss the possible role of vision and of the species ecology as factors of reproductive success and mating strategy. Our conclusion is that the mechanical mating disruption technique seems feasible for future application to this species.

Linear infrastructures(e.g.,roads,railways,pipelines,and powerlines)pose a serious threat to wildlife,due to the risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions(roadkills).The placement of mitigation measures,such as crossing structures,should consider species’life cycles and ecological *** an assessment would require data collection over large areas,which may be possible by employing citizen *** this study,we aimed to identify spatiotemporal trends of roadkill occurrence using citizen science data from one of the most urbanized and biodiversityrich regions of *** trends were analyzed using generalized additive models,while landscape patterns were assessed by identifying significant thresholds over land cover gradients,related to increases in relative roadkill abundance,by employing threshold indicator taxa *** approach recorded a total of 529 roadkills,including 33 different species,comprising 13 mammal,10 bird,6 reptile,and 2 amphibian *** analysis indicated significant temporal trends for the red fox,the European hedgehog,the stone marten and the European badger,with peaks in roadkill occurrence between the winter and spring *** roadkill abundance increased mostly in landscapes with anthropogenic land cover classes,such as complex cultivations,orchards,or urban *** results allowed us to develop a map of potential roadkill risk that could assist in planning the placement of mitigation *** science contributions from highly populated areas allowed data collection over a large area and a dense road network,and also directly led to the evaluation of management decisional options.

Mapping and ultrastructure of antennal chemosensilla of the wheat bug Eurygaster maura

Antennae of the wheat stink bug Eurygaster maura L. （Hemiptera： scutelleridae） were investigated to elucidate structure and distribution of antennal chemosensilla in females. Five type of sensilla were identified and characterized using a scanning electron microscope （sEM） and a transmission electron microscope （TEM）. Type 1 sensilla are mechanical and contact chemoreceptors with a single apical pore. Types 2 and 3 sensilla are multiporous chemoreceptors both with typical features of olfactory sensilla. Type 4 are multiporous peg-like sensilla, short and with a grooved surface. Type 5 are sensilla coeloconica with a smooth and aporous peg completely inserted in a sub-cuticular chamber. All types are distributed on the two flagellar segments, but we considered only the apical flagellomere in which the largest number of sensilla are located. The most abundant sensilla are type 3, while the less numerous are type 5. All types, except type 2, decreased in number from the tip to the base of the segment. The lower density of sensilla was recorded on the dorsal-internal part of the apical antennomere, while the higher density was recorded on the opposite side （external-ventral）.

Pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease:Preventive and therapeutic value of lifestyle intervention

Adult mesenchymal stem cells, specifically adipose-derived stem cells have self-renewal and multiple differentiation potentials and have shown to be the ideal candidate for therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine, particularly in peripheral nerve regeneration. Adipose-de- rived stem cells are easily harvested, although they may show the effects of aging, hence their potential in nerve repair may be limited by cellular senescence or donor age. Cellular senescence is a complex process whereby stem cells grow old as consequence of intrinsic events （e.g., DNA damage） or environmental cues （e.g., stressful stimuli or diseases）, which determine a permanent growth arrest. several mechanisms are implicated in stem cell senescence, although no one is exclusive of the others. In this review we report some of the most important factors modulating the senescence process, which can influence adipose-derived stem cell morphology and function, and compromise their clinical application for peripheral nerve regenerative cell therapy.

Google Earth(GE)has recently become the focus of increasing interest and popularity among available online virtual globes used in scientific research projects,due to the free and easily accessed satellite imagery provided with global ***,the uses of this service raises several research questions on the quality and uncertainty of spatial data(*** accuracy,precision,consistency),with implications for potential uses like data collection and *** paper aims to analyze the horizontal accuracy of very high resolution(VHR)GE images in the city of Rome(Italy)for the years 2007,2011,and *** evaluation was conducted by using both Global Positioning system ground truth data and cadastral photogrammetric vertex as independent check *** validation process includes the comparison of histograms,graph plots,tests of normality,azimuthal direction errors,and the calculation of standard statistical *** results show that GE VHR imageries of Rome have an overall positional accuracy close to 1 m,sufficient for deriving ground truth samples,measurements,and large-scale planimetric maps.
