The first half of the 20th century was marked by a shift in morbidity and mortality pat-terns in industrialized countries all over the world,moving from the leading role of infec-tious diseases to the increasing role of chronic,non-communicable *** particular,cardiovascular disease(CVD)has been an important cause of mor-bidity and mortality,with coronary heart disease(CHD)being the leading cause of *** primary reason for this transition was the discovery of anti-biotics and vaccines,the widespread use of which has led to a decline in infectious diseases and increase in life expectancy and population aging.[1]

Improving Influenza Vaccination Rates— A Straightforward Task or a Multifaceted Challenge?

Annual vaccination with trivalent inactivated vaccines has been proven as safe and efficacious in preventing influenza and its complications. It is recommended especially to the elderly (>65) and other people at high risk for influenza complications and death such as patients with chronic medical conditions. Healthcare workers, who are considered to transmit infection to patients, or reciprocally, can be infected during encounters with patients, are also strongly advised to regularly receive vaccines. In order to improve influenza vaccination rates in countries in Europe, health authorities set targets for vaccination coverage by 2010. Despite the substantial efforts done, coverage rates maintain low. It is considered that informed decisions, based on existing evidence, are likely to cope with improving vaccination rates. Intention of this manuscript is to address some important issues connected with influenza vaccination which, to be able to aid the evidence, need to be further clearified. To support the debate, the author presented some dubious facts from the own practice experiences. As a long-lasting solution to improve vaccination practice strategies, strengthening programed vaccination is suggested. This concept would include implementation of nationwide vaccination protocols and their harmonization by the common logistics, and standardized data collection based on installation of E-health records. This strategy would allow data comparison among different populations. As based on this debate, improving influenza vaccination rates is not likely to be easy to perform straightforward task, but a multifaceted, long term challenge.

Modelling Influenza Vaccination Outcomes

Modelling response to influenza vaccination can improve our understanding of how proposed factors, older age, past exposure to influenza viruses, and health disorders, used together, affect antibody production after influenza vaccination. Knowledge about this may be important when planning influenza vaccination protocols. This problem will be emphasized especially in the future, when many alternative vaccines and vaccination approaches are likely to be allowed for a routine use. A major difficulty, in modelling response to influenza vaccination, is how to identify health parameters, suitable for general use. To deal with the complexity of this task, we reached out for the concept of a systems biology and machine learning methods. Based on this approach, we showed that it is possible to construct useful models of influenza vaccination outcomes. In addition, by varying criteria for definition of the model’s outcome measure, that is, of low antibody response to influenza vaccination, we showed that a set of health parameters, albeit limited, are necessary for model to achieve a wider practical use.
