Pragmatic Transfer in Compliment Responses by Chinese Learners of English

This paper reports a study on the pragmatic transfer in compliment responses by Chinese Learners of English. It has three aims：（1） to discover similarities and differences in compliment responses between the American English speakers （AES） and Chinese Learners of English （CLE）; （2） to provide empirical evidence for or against existing theories of pragmatic transfer in compliment responses and （3） to reveal differences of social values between the two groups. The results of this study are compared with those of R. Chen who made a similar study in 1993. The changes in the past ten years are discussed at the end.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the most interesting and difficult problems in recent years due to its important functions in the ecological and environmental system and the complexity of its chemical composition and structure. It is well ac- cepted that fluorescence characteristics and mo- lecular weight distribution are two important pa- rameters in the DOM characterization. However, the relationship between them is still unknown. In this study, fluorescence and molecular weight distribution of DOM in Lake Hongfeng, Lake Baihua and their rivers, and their relationship were investigated using the combination of fluorescence spectroscopy and high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) with on-line UV absorbance and fluores- cence detectors. The results show that there were two obvious humic-like fluorescence peaks (Peaks A and B) in DOM from lake water. But there was an- other obvious protein-like fluorescence peak (Peak C) in DOM from river water. The humic-like fluorescence material consisted of DOM fraction with smaller mo- lecular weight, ranging from 1.0 to 3.0 kDa, while the protein-like fluorescence material mainly consisted of DOM fraction with MW larger than 2.0 kDa. The cal- culation of MW using HPSEC was related to the UV absorbance wavelength chosen.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are key drivers of osteoarthritis(OA)pathogenesis and disease *** we report the synthesis of poly(p-coumaric)nanoparticles(PCA NPs)from p-courmaic acid(p-CA),a naturally occurring phytophenolic acid,to be a multifunctional and drug-free therapeutic for temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis(TMJOA).Compared to hyaluronic acid(HA)that is clinically given as viscosupplementation,PCA NPs exhibited long-term efficacy,superior anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in alleviating TMJOA and repairing the TMJ cartilage and subchondral bone in a rat model of ***,TMJ repair mediated by PCA NPs could be attributed to their anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in enhancing cell proliferation and matrix synthesis,while reducing inflammation,oxidative stress,matrix degradation,and chondrocyte ***,our study demonstrates a multifunctional nanoparticle,synthesized from natural p-coumaric acid,that is stable and possess potent antioxidant,anti-inflammatory properties and ferroptosis inhibition,beneficial for treatment of TMJOA.

The microwave dielectric properties and microstructure of BaTi4.3ZnyO9.6＋y ＋0.02 mol% SnO2＋0.01 mol% MnCO3＋x mol% Nb2O5（x=0-0.05, y=0-0.08） system ceramics were studied as a function of the amount of ZnO and Nb2O5 doped. Addition of （y=0-0.05） ZnO and （x=0-0.025） Nb2O5 enhanced the reactivity and decreased the sintering temperature effectively. It also increased the dielectric constant ε r and quality factor Q（=1/tan 8） of the system due to the substitution of Ti^4＋ ions with incorporating Zn^2＋and Nb^5＋ ions, which was analyzed by the reaction ZnO＋Nb2O5＋ 3 TiTxTi →ZnTi＋ 2NbTi＋3TiO2. When the system doped with （y=0.05） ZnO and （x=0.025） Nb205 were sintered at 1 160 ℃ for 6 h, the εr. Qf0 value and rfwere 36.5, 42 000 GHz, and＋1.8 ppm/℃, respectively, at 5 GHz.

The occurrence modes of alkali and alkaline-earth metals（AAEMs） in coal relate to their release behavior and ash formation during combustion. To better understand the transformation of AAEMs,the release behavior of water-soluble,HCl-soluble,HCl-insoluble AAEMs during Shenmu coal（SM coal） oxy-fuel combustion in the presence of SO2 and H2O in a drop-tube reactor was investigated through serial dissolution using H2O and HCl solutions. The results show that the release rates of AAEMs increase with an increase in temperature under the three atmospheres studied. The high release rates of Mg and Ca from SM coal are dependent on the high content of soluble Mg and Ca in SM coal. SO2 inhibits the release rates of AAEMs,while H2O promotes them. The effects of SO2 and H2O on the Na and K species are more evident than those on Mg and Ca species. All three types of AAEMs in coal can volatilize in the gas phase during coal combustion. The W-type AAEMs release excessively,whereas the release rates of I-type AAEMs are relatively lower. Different types of AAEM may interconvert through different pathways under certain conditions. Both SO2 and H2O promote the transformation reactions. The effect of SO2 was related to sulfate formation and the promotion by H2O occurs because of a decrease in the melting point of the solid as well as the reaction of H2O.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease(CAD).METHODS:This was an investigator-initiated,prospective,multi-center,cross-sectional *** the participants from three hospitals in China had been diagnosed by both Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method and coronary *** compared the two diagnostic methods to calculate the sensitivity,the specificity,the omission diagnostic rate,the mistaken diagnostic rate and accuracy in order to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method for ***:A total of 326 subjects were enrolled,diagnosed by both Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method and coronary *** a result,there were 166 positive cases according to Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method,and 131 positive cases according to coronary *** with the results of coronary angiography,the sensitivity of Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method was 80.2%,the specificity was 68.7%,the omission diagnostic rate was 19.8%,the mistaken diagnostic rate was 31.3%,and the accuracy was 73.3%.Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was estimated as 0.735 for all,and 0.718,0.735,0.783 for the three ***:Qisexingtai hand diagnostic method with high accuracy and sensitivity has certain application value in the diagnosis of CAD.
