Multi-origin alkanes related to CO_2-rich, mantle-derived fluid in Dongying Sag, Bohai Bay basin

With the newly obtained carbon isotope data for the natural gas, a pilot study of multiple-sourced alkanes related to the mantled-derived fluid is presented. The carbon isotope values of alkanes in the Dongying Sag possess the features indicating a general organic origin. However, there are two sub-populations in the isotopic data set, which reflect two specific types of origins. In general, the sub-population with high δ13CCH4 values is related to the CO2-rich, mantle-derived fluid, and it is distributed in the belts where mantle-derived fluid flow and basic volcanic activities have occurred. Geological and geochemical studies demonstrate that this variation of methane carbon isotope values in the Dongying Sag is unrelated with the basin bury and thermal histories, types of source rocks, and reactions between basin fluid and rocks. Mixing of mantle-derived fluid and organic sourced hydrocarbons is probably the cause for the variation.

Traditional methods of multivariate statistical analyses,used to recognize anomalous hydrocarbon signatures in petroleum exploration,have at least four shortcomings:(1) it is difficult to isolate anomalies where the data are not normally distributed;(2) it is difficult to separate distinct anomaly populations corresponding to distinct formation mechanisms while separating anomalies from background;(3) it is not fitting to present illustrations of multivariate anomalies on contour maps;and (4) it is not suitable for preparation for multivariate pattern *** present serious obstacles to the application of exploration geochemistry in hydrocarbon *** study demonstrates that the Back propagation Artificial Neural Network(Bp-ANN) with logic multiplication cluster analysis(a new cluster analysis proposed in this paper) overcomes the difficulties exhibited by traditional multivariate *** logic multiplication cluster analvsis was designed to produce a training set for the *** approach was established on the basis of geochemical characteristics and origin of the various populations in geochemical data,such as background,micro-seepage anomalies and seepage *** topology of the Bp-ANN was optimized using the outputs of the Bp-ANN and the correct *** order to illustrate the multivariate anomalies recognized using Bp-ANN on contour maps,we designed the expression functions for Bp-ANN application in this *** traditional methods of anomaly recognition,acid-extractable hydrocarbons in soils have not proven to be efficient indicators for hvdrocarbon potential in East Anan Sag,Inner ***,the Bp-ANN has indicated that these indicators are efficient and that areas of East Anan Sag have potential reserves of petroleum.

Two geochemical surveys were conducted in 1992 and 2000 respectively in the Yimeng Uplift of the Ordos basin,*** earlier survey grid had 1×5 km spacing and the later survey grid had 0.5×0.5 km *** acid-extractable hydrocarbons of both surveys show similar geochemical ***,the anomalies obtained with traditional statistical methods do not correlate with existing oil/gas *** study reveals two problems in the data and their *** first one is interference caused by the variation of soil *** applied a wavelet-analysis-based method to eliminate this interference in the data of the later *** second is that micro-seepage anomalies did not identify existing oil/gas fields and seepage anomalies related with faults had not been previously *** modified the logic multiplication cluster analysis and applied a multi-fractal model and a back propagation artificial neural network to recognize these two types of anomalies that cannot be recognized with typical statistics in the study *** recognized seepage anomalies display a string-bead-shaped pattern and some are distributed along a large fault,in this *** fault is the main pathway for hydrocarbon *** micro-seepage anomalies are ring-shaped and are mostly distributed close to the *** coincide with oil/gas field and structure ***,reprocessing of existing geochemical data using these new methods can greatly improve their usefulness in hydrocarbon exploration.
