Fading indirect effects in a warming arctic tundra

Indirect interactions in food webs can strongly influence the net effect of global change on ecological communities yet they are rarely quantified and hence remain poorly understood. Using a 22-year time series, we investigated climate-induced and predator-mediated indirect effects on grazing intensity in the tundra food web of Bylot Island, which experienced a warming trend over the last two decades. We evaluated the relative effects of environmental parameters on the proportion of plant biomass grazed by geese in wetlands and examined the temporal changes in the strength of these cascading effects. Migrating geese are the dominant herbivores on Bylot Island and can consume up to 60% of the annual production of wetland graminoids. Spring North Atlantic Oscillation, mid-summer temperatures and summer abundance of lemmings （prey sharing predators with geese） best-explained annual variation in grazing intensity. Goose grazing impact increased in years with high temperatures and high lemming abundance. However, the strength of these indirect effects on plants changed over time. Grazing intensity was weakly explained by environmental factors in recent years, which were marked by a sharp increase in plant primary production and steady decrease in grazing pressure. Indirect effects do not seem to be reversing the direct positive effect of warming on wetland plants. We suggest that cascading effects on plants may lag considerably behind direct effects in vertebrate dominated arctic communities, especially where key herbivore populations are strongly affected by factors outside of the Arctic [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 189-202, 2014].

Biphasic Mechanical Properties of in vivo Repaired Cartilage

In the fast growing field of scaffold-based tissue engineering, improvement on the mechanical properties of newly formed tissues, e.g. the repaired cartilage, has always been one of the core issues. Studies on the correlations among scaffold composition, in vivo morphological changes of the construct, and the finite deformation behaviors of new tissues （e.g. creep and stress-relaxation, and equilibrium response）, have attracted increasing interests. In this paper, the correlations between the compressive biphasic mechanical properties （i.e., equilibrium elastic modulus E and permeability coefficient k） of 3d printing scaffold （consisting of collagen and fl-tricalcium phosphate） and the proteoglycans （PGs） concentration of the repaired carti- lages after 24 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks of scaffold implantation were investigated. Results indicated that the repaired cartilage covered the entire cartilage surface of large cylindrical osteochondral defects （10 mm in diameter ~ 15 mm in depth） on the canine trochlea grooves after 24 weeks. The equilibrium elastic modulus of the repaired cartilage reached 22.4% at 24 weeks, 70.3% at 36 weeks, and 93.4% at 52 weeks of the native cartilage, respectively. Meanwhile, the permeability coefficient decreased with time and at 52 weeks was still inferior to that of the native cartilage in one order of magnitude. In addition, the amount of glycosaminoglycans （GAGs） of repaired cartilage increased constantly with time, which at 52 weeks approached to nearly 60% of that of native cartilage. 3d printed scaffolds have potential applications in repairing large-scale cartilage defects.

Managing familial pancreatic cancer(FPC)is challenging for gastroenterologists,surgeons and ***-risk individuals(HRI)for pancreatic cancer(PC)(FPC or with germline mutations)are a heterogeneous group of subjects with a theoretical lifetime cumulative risk of PC over 5%.Screening is mainly based on annual magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)and endoscopic ultrasound(EUS).The goal of screening is to identify early-stage operable cancers or high-risk precancerous lesions(pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia or intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms with high-grade dysplasia).In the literature,target lesions are identified in 2%-5%of HRI who undergo *** appears to provide better identification of small solid lesions(0%-46%of HRI)and chronicpancreatitis-like parenchymal changes(14%-77%of HRI),while MRI is probably the best modality to identify small cystic lesions(13%-49%of HRI).There are no specific studies in HRI on the use of contrast-enhanced harmonic *** can also be used to obtain tissue ***,there is still limited evidence on the accuracy of imaging procedures used for screening or agreement on which patients to *** cost-effectiveness of screening is also *** new EUS-related techniques,such as searching for dNA abnormalities or protein markers in pancreatic fluid,appear to be promising.

Intrauterine insemination with donor sperm:only the number of motile spermatozoa inseminated influences both pregnancy and live-birth rates

Intrauterine insemination with donor sperm(IUI-d)is an assisted reproductive technology(ART)offered to couples with definitive male infertility or risk of genetic disease ***,we sought to evaluate our practice in IUI-d and identify factors that influenced the success *** performed a retrospective,single-center study of all IUI-d procedures performed at Lille University Medical Center(Lille,France)between January 1,2007,and december 31,*** and multivariate analyses with a mixed logistic model were used to identify factors associated with clinical pregnancies and live *** included 322 couples and 1179 IUI-d *** clinical pregnancy rate was 23.5%,and the live birth rate was 18.9%per *** a multivariate analysis,the women’s age was negatively associated with the live birth *** number of motile spermatozoa inseminated was the only factor associated with both clinical pregnancies and live births,with a chosen threshold of 0.75 *** clinical pregnancy and live birth rates were,respectively,17.3%and 13.0%below the number of motile spermatozoa inseminated threshold and 25.9%and 21.0%at or above the threshold(all P=0.005).The number of motile spermatozoa inseminated was the only factor that significantly influenced both pregnancies and live-birth rates after ***,below a threshold of 0.75 million motile spermatozoa inseminated,those rates were significantly *** of this number of motile spermatozoa inseminated threshold may help centers to allocate donations more effectively while maintaining reasonable waiting times for patients.

Combining infrared and mode synthesizing atomic force microscopy： Application to the study of lipid vesicles inside Streptomyces bacteria

We propose a new analytical approach combining vibrational spectroscopy and acoustic tomography for the detection and characterization of vesicles inside Streptomyces bacteria. Using atomic force microscopy and infrared spectroscopy （AFM-IR）, we detect the presence of triglyceride vesicles. Their sizes in depth are measured with high accuracy using mode synthesizing atomic force microscopy （MS-AFM）. We conducted a comparative study of AFM-IR and MS-AFM, and highlighted the advantages of the coupling of these techniques in having a full characterization （chemical, topographical, and volumetric） of a biological sample. With these complementary techniques, a complete access to the vesicle size distribution has been achieved with an accuracy of less than 50 nm. A 3d reconstruction of bacteria showing the in-depth distribution of vesicles is given to underline the great potential of the acoustic method.

The cells of origin of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications(NHOs), which develop frequently in the periarticular muscles following spinal cord injuries(SCIs) and traumatic brain injuries, remain unclear because skeletal muscle harbors two progenitor cell populations: satellite cells(SCs), which are myogenic, and fibroadipogenic progenitors(FAPs), which are mesenchymal. Lineage-tracing experiments using the Cre recombinase/Lox P system were performed in two mouse strains with the fluorescent protein Zs Green specifically expressed in either SCs or FAPs in skeletal muscles under the control of the Pax7 or Prrx1 gene promoter, respectively. These experiments demonstrate that following muscle injury, SCI causes the upregulation of PdGFRα expression on FAPs but not SCs and the failure of SCs to regenerate myofibers in the injured muscle, with reduced apoptosis and continued proliferation of muscle resident FAPs enabling their osteogenic differentiation into NHOs. No cells expressing Zs Green under the Prrx1 promoter were detected in the blood after injury, suggesting that the cells of origin of NHOs are locally derived from the injured muscle. We validated these findings using human NHO biopsies. PdGFRα+mesenchymal cells isolated from the muscle surrounding NHO biopsies could develop ectopic human bones when transplanted into immunocompromised mice, whereas Cd56+myogenic cells had a much lower potential. Therefore, NHO is a pathology of the injured muscle in which SCI reprograms FAPs to undergo uncontrolled proliferation and differentiation into osteoblasts.

Odds Ratio &Relative Risk Ratio of Buoy Conditions for Storms in the Atlantic Basin

The purpose of this paper is to bring awareness to the general public that certain conditions that occur at a buoy in the Atlantic Basin, such as wind located at the buoy, pressure located at a buoy, water temperature located at a buoy, atmospheric pressure located at a buoy, may be useful in helping predict when a hurricane could possibly hit the state of Florida in the future. One of the goals of this paper is to bring new statistical methods to investigate and analyze data, which will create better predicable measures in determining when a hurricane will possibly hit the state of Florida. In this paper, the topics of binary logistic regression and multinomial regression modeling are discussed in reference to their outcomes of both the odds ratio and relative risk ratio respectively. The coefficients from these models will show which prospective buoy conditions are possibly more responsible for indication of a storm being present in the Atlantic Basin. In this paper, the data that was used and compiled into a larger data set came from two different sources. First, the hurricane data for the years 1992-2013 came from Unisys Weather site (Atlantic Basin Hurricanes data) and the buoy data has been available from the National Buoy Center. In this paper, the variables of interest are: storm present, buoy wind speed, buoy pressure, buoy atmospheric temperature, buoy water temperature and buoy wind direction. The buoy conditions are the buoy wind, the buoy wind direction, the buoy pressure, buoy atmospheric temperature and the buoy water temperature.
