Factors hindering the degradation of pharmaceuticals from human urine in an iron-activated persulfate system

This study investigated the degradation of clofibric acid(CFA),bezafibrate(BZF),and sulfamethoxazole(SmX)in synthetic human urine using a novel mesoporous iron powderactivated persulfate system(mFe-PS system),and identified the factors limiting their degradation in synthetic human urine.A kinetic model was established to expose the radical production in various reaction conditions,and experiments were conducted to verify the modeling *** the phosphate-containing mFe-PS system,the 120 min removal efficiency of CFA decreased from 95.1%to 76.6%as the phosphate concentration increased from 0.32 to 6.45 mmol/L,but recovered to 90.5%when phosphate concentration increased to 16.10 mmol/***,the increased concentration of phosphate from 0.32 to 16.10mmol/L reduced the BZF degradation efficacy from 91.5%to 79.0%,whereas SmX removal improved from 37.3%to 62.9%.The m Fe-PS system containing(bi)carbonate,from 4.20 to166.70 mmol/L,reduced CFA and BZF removal efficiencies from 100%to 76.8%and 80.4%,respectively,and SmX from 83.5%to 56.7%within a 120-min reaction *** addition,alkaline conditions(pH≥8.0)inhibited CFA and BZF degradations,while nonacidic pH(pH≥7.0)remarkably inhibited SmX *** of the kinetic model indicated the formation of phosphate(H_(2)PO_(4)^(·)/HPO_(4)^(·-))and/or carbonate radicals(CO_(3)^(·-))could limit pharmaceutical *** transformation products(TPs)of the pharmaceuticals revealed more incompletely oxidized TPs occurred in the phosphate-and(bi)carbonate-containing m Fe-PS systems,and indicated that H_(2)PO_(4)^(·)/HPO_(4)^(·-)mainly degraded pharmaceuticals via a benzene ring-opening reaction while CO_(3)^(·-)preferentially oxidized pharmaceuticals via a hydroxylation reaction.

The results on high power injection with the ueutral bean, injection （NBI） system for the Large Helical Device （LHD） are reported. The system consists of three beam-lines with two hydrogen negative ion （H^- ion） sources installed in each beam-line. In order to improve the injection power, a new beam accelerator with a multi-slot grounded grid （mSGG） has been developed and applied to one beam-line. Using the accelerator, a maximum power of 5.7 mW was achieved in 2003 and 2004, and the maximum energy of 189 keV was reached. The power and energy exceeded the design values of the individual beam-line for LHD. The other beam-lines also increased their injection power up to about 4 mW, and the total injection power of 13.1 mW was achieved with three beam-llnes in 2003. Although the accelerator had an advantage in high power beam injection, extracted beams expand in the short side direction of the ground-grid slot. The disadvantage has been resolved by modifying the aperture shapes of the steering grid.

Summary We examined the effects of dietary Japanese millet protein(JmP)and Korean foxtail millet protein(KFmP)on lipid metabolism and type 2 diabetes in rats and *** type 2 diabetic rats were fed with JmP for 20 days,plasma glucose levels lowered,whereas those of HDL-cholesterol and adiponectin rose significantly compared to the control *** when type 2 diabetic mice were fed with KFmP for 20 days,plasma levels of insulin lowered greatly,whereas those of HDL-cholesterol and adiponectin rose remarkably compared to control *** the role of adiponectin,insulin and HDL-cholesterol in diabetes and atherosclerosis or obesity,it seemed likely that JmP and KFmP might improve insulin sensitivity and cholesterol metabolism through an increase in adiponectin ***,these proteins might serve as another beneficial food component in obesity-related dis-eases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

＜正＞Eco-town projects in Japan are not homogenous and are of various types. Therefore, categorizing Eco-town projects into some types is useful for the local governments and companies who try to develop their own Eco-town projects and also to start actually constructing and joining their new Eco-town projects. Nevertheless, few studies had tried categorizing, analyzing and evaluating Eco-town projects semi-quantitatively using various types of parameters such as statistics, which were related to local societies and industries. In former study [1-2], seventeen Eco-town Projects until the end of march in 2003 were applied into three matsunaga’s categories （Type1: promoting environmental industries, Type2: treating waste, Type3: organizing communities）. Authors showed that matsunaga’s categories [3] worked well to characterize Eco-town projects. In this study, twenty-three Eco-town Projects until the end of march in 2005 were tried to apply into three matsunaga’s categories. This time, however, more quantitative statistics were selected as parameters in order to categorize, characterize and evaluate each Eco-town Projects. Compared to the former study [1-2], it was difficult to categorize clearly into three simple matunaga’s categories. One reason why it is difficult to categolize into three types is that each Eco-town Project has several roles and characteristics to the region along with Eco-town Projects glowing. This developing method in these studies is also useful to assist making each Eco-town Plan and constructing Eco-town Project in some regions, especially, in East Asia where many cities and regions have higher interest in making recycling complex.

In a deuterium operation on the Large Helical Device, the measurement and control equipment placed in the toms hall must survive under an environment of radiation, To study the effects of gamma-ray irradiation on the equipment, an irradiation experiment is performed at the Cobalt-60 irradiation facility of Nagoya University. Transient and permanent effects on a personal computer, media converters, programmable logic controllers, isolation amplifiers, a web camera, optical flow meters, and water sealing gaskets are experimentally surveyed. Transient noise appears on the web camera. Offset of the signal increases with an increase of the integrated dose on the programmable logic controller. The DeviceNet module on the programmable logic controller is broken at the integrated dose of 72 Gy, which is the expected range of the integrated dose of the toms hall. The other equipment can survive under the gamma-ray field in the toms hall.

The 1995 Northern Niigata Earthquake (m 6.0) occurred at a shallow depth in the Niigata seismic gap. The anomaly areas in temperature, electrical conductivity and Cl- concentration of groundwater trend northeast as linear distribution in the epicentral area and are approximately coincident with the area of the seismic intensity 6 (JmA scale). The distributions of seismic intensity 6 and groundwater anomalies convincingly imaged the presence of a buried active fault beneath the epicentral area. The occurrence of this earthquake and the anomalies of groundwater were related to the expulsion of geopressured hydrothermal system (GHS). All epicenters of the destructive earthquakes along the Shinanogawa seismic belt are actually located in the buried active fault zones characterized by the areas of temperature and geochemical anomalies of groundwater. These earthquakes might have been triggered by the activity of GHS. The expulsion of GHS along an active fault in combination with the thermal softening of fault zone attributed to high rock temperature may reduce fracture strength of the rock, and trigger earthquake occurrence. The dimension of the anomaly area of groundwater temperature at the epicentral area reflected the scale of the earthquake fault. The linear anomaly areas of groundwater resulting from the expulsion of GHS and having no historical destructive earthquake are of the predicated areas of future destructive earthquakes. monitoring of groundwater conditions in these areas may provide useful information regarding the future occurrence of earthquakes.
