Understanding the biological parameters of some triatomine subspecies of Meccus phyllosomus （Burmeister） is a crucial first step in estimating the epidemiologie importance of this group. Biological parameters related to hatching, lifetime, number of blood meals to molt, percentage of females at the end of the cycle, number of laid eggs, and mortality for each instar of 3 M. phyllosomus subspecies [M. p. mazzottii （Usinger）, M. p. pallidipennis （Stal）, and M. p. phyllosomus] and their laboratory hybrids were evaluated and compared. No significant differences （P 〉 0.05） were found among the experimental hybrids （MaPa, MaPhy, PaPhy） and reciprocal cohorts. In 5 （hatching, number of blood meals to molt, accumulative mortality, percentage of females, and mean number of laid eggs） of the 6 studied parameters （with the exception of development time）, the hybrid cohorts had better fitness results than the parental cohorts involved in each set of crosses. The increase in hybrid fitness found in our study could lead to an increase in the epidemiologic risks caused by transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi to humans.

More effective approaches are needed in the treatment of blood cancers,in particular acute myeloid leukemia(AML),that are able to eliminate resistant leukemia stem cells(LSCs)at the bone marrow(BM),after a chemotherapy session,and then enhance hematopoietic stem cell(HSC)engraftment for the re-establishment of the HSC ***,we investigate whether light-activatable nanoparticles(NPs)encapsulating all-trans-retinoic acid(RA^(+)NPs)could solve both *** in vitro results show that mouse AML cells transfected with RA^(+)NPs differentiate towards antitumoral M1 macrophages through RIG.1 and OASL gene *** in vivo results further show that mouse AML cells transfected with RA^(+)NPs home at the BM after transplantation in an AML mouse *** photo-disassembly of the NPs within the grafted cells by a blue laser enables their differentiation towards a macrophage *** macrophage activation seems to have systemic anti-leukemic effect within the BM,with a significant reduction of leukemic cells in all BM compartments,of animals treated with RA^(+)NPs,when compared with animals treated with empty *** a separate group of experiments,we show for the first time that normal HSCs transfected with RA^(+)NPs show superior engraftment at the BM niche than cells without treatment or treated with empty *** is the first time that the activity of RA is tested in terms of long-term hematopoietic reconstitution after transplant using an in situ activation approach without any exogenous priming or genetic conditioning of the transplanted ***,the approach documented here has the potential to improve consolidation therapy in AML since it allows a dual intervention in the BM niche:to tackle resistant leukemia and improve HSC engraftment at the same time.

AIM:To assess B1a cell expression in the rectal mucosa of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients in comparison with healthy ***:Rectal mucosa biopsies were collected from 15 UC patients and 17 healthy ***5 + B cells were analysed by three colour flow cytometry from rectal mucosal samples after mechanical disaggregation by Medimachine.Immunohistochemical analysis of B and T lymphocytes was also *** between,on the one hand,rectal B1a cell concentrations and,on the other,erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein levels and clinical,endoscopic and histological disease activity indices were ***:Rectal B-lymphocyte (CD19 + /CD45 +) rate and concentration were higher in UC patients compared with those in healthy controls (47.85% ± 3.12% vs 26.10% ± 3.40%,P=0.001 and 501 ± 91 cells/mm 2 vs 117 ± 18 cells/mm 2,P < 0.001);Rectal B1a cell density (CD5 + CD19 +) was higher in UC patients than in healthy controls (85 ± 15 cells/mm 2 vs 31 ± 6.7 cells/mm 2,P=0.009).Rectal B1a cell (CD5/CD19 +) rate correlated inversely with endoscopic classification (Rs=-0.637,P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:B1a lymphocytes seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of UC,however,the role they play in its early phases and in disease activity,have yet to be defined.

AIM： To investigate the prevalence of vacuolating cytotoxin （vacA）, cytotoxin associated gene A （cagA） and blood adhesion binding antigen （babA2） genotypes of Helicobacter pylori （H pylori） isolates from Cuban dyspeptic patients. METHODS： DNA was extracted from Hpylori-positive cultures taken from 130 dyspeptic patients. Genotyping was performed by PCR, using specific primers for vacA （s1, s2, m1, m2）, cagA and babA2 genes. Endoscopic observations and histological examinations were used to determine patient pathologies. RESULTS： vacA alleles s1, s2, m1 and m2 were detected in 96 （73.8%）, 34 （26.2%）, 75 （57.7%） and 52 isolates （40%）, respectively, while the cagA gene was detected in 95 isolates （73.2%）. One hundred and seven isolates （82.3%） were babA2-positive. A significant correlation was observed between vacAs1m1 and cagA and between vacAs1ml and babA2 genotypes （P 〈 0.001 and P 〈 0.05, respectively） and between babA2 genotype and cagA status （P 〈 0.05）; but, no correlation was observed between vacAsl and babA2 genotypes. Eighty five （65.4%） and 73 （56.2%） strains were type 1 （vacAsl-cagA-positive） and ＂triplepositive＂（vacAs1-cagA-babA2-positive）, respectively, and their presence was significantly associated with duodenal ulcer （P 〈 0.01 and P 〈 0.001, respectively）. CONCLUSION： The distribution of the main virulence factors in the Cuban strains in this study resembled that of the Western-type strains, and the more virulent H pylori isolates were significantly associated with duodenal ulcer, ulcer disease being the worst pathology observed in the group studied.

The frost growth on cold surfaces in evaporators is an undesirable phenomenon which becomes a problem for the thermal efficiency of the refrigeration systems because the ice layer acts as a thermal insulation,drastically reducing the rate of heat transfer in the *** accumulation implies an increase in energy demand and a decrease in the performance of various components involved in the refrigeration process,reducing its efficiency and making it necessary to periodically remove the frost,resulting in expenses for the defrost *** the present work,a numerical-experimental analysis was performed in order to understand the formation process of porous ice in flat plates with different surface treatments and *** understanding is of utmost importance to minimize the formation of porous ice on cold surfaces and improve equipment efficiency and *** this context,a low-cost experimental apparatus was developed,enabling an experimental analysis of the phenomenon under *** environmental conditions evaluated are the temperature of the cold surface,roomtemperature,humidity,and air *** material of the surfaces under study are aluminum,copper,and brass with different surface finishes,designated as smooth,grooved(hydrophilic),and varnished(hydrophobic).The numerical-experimental analysis demonstrates measurements and simulations of the thickness,surface temperature,and growth rate of the porous ice layer as a function of the elapsed *** numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results,indicating that the varnished surface,with hydrophobic characteristics,presents greater difficulty in providing the ***,the results showed that application of a coating allowed a significant reduction on the frost formation process contributing to the improvement of thermal efficiency and performance of refrigeration systems.

The RE-Fe-B permanent magnets have a complex microstructure and they are susceptible to corrosion process. In this paper, the commercial nickel coatings adhesion was investigated. The microstructure of the RE-Fe-B without coating was analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy and electrochemical techniques. The interface magnet/coating was studied by scanning electron microscopy and the nickel-plated Nd-Fe-B commercial magnets were tested in a salt spray chamber. The ferromagnetic and RE-rich phases were observed. After the anodic polarization curve, a strong intergranular corrosion was observed and the RE-rich phase was preferentially attacked. The interface magnet/Ni coating presented inter-granular corrosion that can affect the nickel coating adherence. This attack had probably occurred during the electrodeposition process. Not all the samples suffered localized corrosion during the salt spray tests and the Ni triple-layer coating presented a few corrosion points. RE-Fe-B alloy magnets need to be protected with appropriate coatings to each environment to which they will be exposed and the protective coating must not be damaged.

Persistence of high CD40 and CD40L expression after restorative proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis

AIM： To focus on the role of CD40 and CD40L in their pathogenesis. METHODS： We analyzed by immunohistochemistry the CD40 and CD40L expression in the pouch mucosa of 28 patients who had undergone RPC for UC, in the terminal ileum of 6 patients with UC and 11 healthy subjects. We also examined by flow cytometry the expression of CEH0 by B lymphoo/tes and monocytes in the peripheral blood of 20 pouch patients, 15 UC patients and 11 healthy controls. RESULTS： Ileal pouch mucosa leukocytes presented a significantly higher expression of CD40 and CD40L as compared to controls. This alteration correlated with pouchitis, but was also present in the healthy pouch and in the terminal ileum of UC patients. CD40 expression of peripheral B lymphocytes was significantly higher in patients with UC and pouch, respect to controls. Increased CD40 levels in blood B cells of pouch patients correlated with the presence of spondyloarthropathy, but not with pouchitis, or inflammatory indices. CONCLUSION： High CD40 expression in the ileal pouch mucosa could be implied in the pathogenesis of pouchitis following proctocolectomy for UC, whereas its increased levels on peripheral blood B lymphocytes are associated with the presence of extraintestinal manifestations.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Head and Neck:Epidemiology and Predictors of Prognosis

Objectives: The biologic behavior of the adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and the factors predicting outcome for these tumors are still poorly understood. Our objective is to analyze the predicting factors and the value of different treatment possibilities, since none sole treatment has been standardized. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the epidemiologic, clinical and histologic aspects of ACC, as well as treatment options and other prognostic factors of all the cases of ACC of the head and neck treated at this Institution were analyzed. From 1974 until 2011, 152 patients were diagnosed with ACC and treated at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (Porto Centre). Main outcome measures: overall survival, local recurrence and distant metastasis were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Factors predictive of outcome were identified by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 55.8 years (range, 19-83 years). Incidence was higher in the female population, with a female to male ratio of 1.7:1 respectively. The primary tumor location was hard palate and submandibular region in 56 cases, 28 in each location (24.6%), parotid gland (17 cases, 14.9%) and oral cavity excluding palate (16 cases, 14%).Distributions according to T stage were: T1 (29.8%);T2 (30.7%);T3 (17.5%);T4 (22%). The overall 1-year, 5-year and 10-year survival for all patients were 94.6%, 60.5%, 41.6%, respectively. Conclusions: Univariate survival analysis revealed that age older than 60 years (p = 0.002), solid histologic subtype (p = 0.042), advanced clinical stage (p p = 0.036) were correlated with a poor survival. Multivariate analysis confirmed that age and advanced clinical stage were worst independent predicators of overall survival as well as perineural invasion for local recurrence and distant metastasis. In our analysis, radiotherapy did not have a relevant impact on survival, except in cases of solid histologic subtype. To analyze distant metastatic capacity

The Development of Mathematical Modelling Activities from Thematic Projects in the Social-Critical Perspective

In this paper, the authors present a modelling activity developed from a thematic project in the models and mathematical modelling class of the professional master＇s degree program in mathematics education at the Federal University of Ouro Preto. The students enrolled in the class chose to study the theme Brazilian Public Politics. After several debates regarding the theme, the students were separated into three groups and each group chose a subtheme to study. The themes were IDH （index of human development）, minimum wage and social security. As an example, a description of the thematic project about the minimum wage in Brazil is presented. The principal results obtained in the study of this theme include a discussion about the potentialities of the theme as a classroom activity in different levels of schooling. As an educational activity, the thematic project demonstrated itself to be greatly relevant, since not only did it provide the learning possibility of mathematics related to the issues studied, but also promoted various discussions regarding the theme, which, in our conception, contributes to the social-critical development of the students. Finally, from the point of view of applied mathematics and mathematics education, the development of a modelling activity from thematic projects showed itself to be a good source of researches.
